Getting rid of rotten fish smell

Guest

Recommended Posts

So father in law has a bit on at the mo and left bait in the boat freezer.

Short story is shore power tripped off, batteries went flat and the bait ended up liquid after two weeks

Have tried rinsing with vinegar and then vanilla essence to get rid of the stench, but there's a long way to go before its usable.

Any other ideas?

Chlorine. Nothing strong. Exit mold works fine. Gone in 30secs is a little stronger. It'll kill the smell and bacteria pretty much instantly.

Then vanilla essence and leave it open and turned off for a week, but as wheels said you need to kill the bacteria first.

The chlorine should do the job just fine, as wheels said. It not only kills the bacteria, but it also removes the protein on which the bacteria are feeding. Removing protein can be harder than it sounds.

A less aggressive method which could work is lemon juice. But depending on the severity of the problem, I would be heading direct for the chlorine. a bottle of janola is not exactly expensive, either. Just be aware that there are 2 types of gone in 30 seconds/wet and forget etc. There are the Sodium Hypochlorite and the Benzalkonium chloride ones which are the fast acting and the slow acting types. The former is the one you want.

I've got some stuff called Fabrisan which is the shizzle. We sell it to old people homes which should tell you enough. It's tea tree oil based stuff.

Let me know if you want one, I'm feeling Xmassy

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll have another crack with Chlorine based products and might take you up on the fabrisan if that doesn't work Ptown.

Cheers

Really hard to get rid of rotten fish smell. Guy I knew years ago had a nice new volkswagon superbug that he spilled a bucket of bait mullet. Car stank forever after!
