How is the single handed fleet looking. Im looking at taking the Taniwha single handed if there is going to be some good numbers.

 

Lot's of chatter and interest and close to 10 now have told me they are in, even before the NOR was put up.

Can multis enter singlehanded? If so, which start time would they use?

 

Singlehanded goes at 0900, so that's the time as it stands. This would presumably include any multis as they are not prohibited in the NOR from entering as singlehanded. To be honest we have not had any requests for singlehanded multihull racing to date - would be great if we can get more as it would be better to have a singlehanded multihull division.

 

If we can drum up entries for singlehanded multihulls then RYC can consider putting in a new division (NOR 4.4) and/or class+line prize (NOR 9.5) - I'd support it, and would likely have them start on an extension of the line past ODM but with the multi start.

 

In other words, given entrants we'll do our best to accommodate!

A SNAPSHOT OF CARPARKING

Westhaven Marina has a surplus of parking. At absolute peak times, like Wednesday evenings when many boats are racing, some parts of the carpark, especially those by the yacht clubs, are full, but it is almost always possible to easily find a carpark within the bounds of the Marina. On public holidays like Labour Day and Anniversary Day, one yellow zoned carpark is used for every two boats, on average.

Outside of those times, it is considered that we operate with a fairly significant surplus of parking - in usual times we use less than one carpark for every three or four boats - and I am sure that anyone who drives through on weekdays or weekends outside of peak times - will agree that there is a lot of unused space at the marina.

WHERE WE ARE HEADED

Hopefully by now you are reasonably familiar with Waterfront Auckland’s work to open up the waterfront for the public to enjoy, and to develop Westhaven Marina as a world class facility for generations to come. In short, after all of the works are completed, Westhaven Marina will provide 0.8 yellow carparks per berth - significantly more than is used currently by berthholders at all but absolute peak times. That is after allowances are made for parking for workers and customers in the new Westhaven Marine Centre, and allowing for increased visitorship to the Marina.

YOUR RIGHTS AS BERTH HOLDERS

Collectively, berth holders - whether owners or renters - have a right, established in the Trust deeds that were created when Westhaven was developed, to 0.8 parking spaces per berth at the Marina, and guests or crew are expected to use the public spaces. This lasts right through to the end of the License periods of the berths.

In practice, we provide two parking permits per berth, and the Westhaven Marina Office is very accommodating, and if, for example, you are going cruising for a couple of days, or need a temporary permit, we are very happy for you to contact the office to discuss your requirements. That will not change.

BETTER CARPARK MANAGEMENT

Two years ago, with more CBD workers starting to see the marina as a source of cheap parking, we started looking very closely at managing our space. We worked on our carpark systems, including better use of white zones, yellow zones and towing, and feedback has been very positive that it’s much easier in 2014 for legitimate users to get a carpark at Westhaven, than it was in 2012.

Even so, we tow five or six cars a week, and that’s not something we like doing, because it engenders bad feeling with our customers and the general public.

Therefore, we are investigating a trial of an electronic vehicle monitoring system. This uses number plate recognition to allow entry for cars into specific areas. For example, it means that we will be able to let race crew members enter restricted parking areas on Wednesday evenings, but restrict the area at other times. The system is flexible and gives us many different options.

CHARGING FOR PARKING?

A significant proportion of Westhaven’s carpark space is under-utilised during day time work hours by Marina users, and Waterfront Auckland wishes to make the best use of the land that it owns. These specific car parks may become regulated over time, with and the majority of the income derived from them most likely to be put towards research and better management of the parking systems. If any regime for charging for parking at Westhaven is ever implemented, it will be done in a manner that honours the legal rights and practical requirements of berth holders to park within reasonable distance of their boat at Westhaven Marina. There is no plan to charge for use of yellow spaces.

tack hammer will be there single handed. just waiting on some rule clarification, flares, lifelines .Seems to me they should have a mother ship so they could possibly sail cat 4 +.

:oops: cat 4 maybe get more boats like piedys etc.
