Here are some more updates for those of you who do not have Facebook....

My friend Jared came by this weekend to help with the removal of the antifoul.

Chris also made a bit more progress on it today as well...

Have made a start to creating the mock up for the bow bunk

Sanded the bulkhead so we can glue on new ply to strengthen it up and well also to make it look a bit more eye appealing!

Have also started to sand in the saloon...although the picture isn't the greatest to really see it.

Went over to Adhesive Technologies to learn about epoxies and what not and Grant Beck explained that it's just like baking a cake and icing it too. I can't wait to start!

Here is what I purchased to get started!

Hi all!

Was wondering if I could get a few helping hands?

I would really like to finish sanding the interior so I can start rebuilding my boat. I am trying to get the boat back in before the summer series starts, as I would like a bit of time to get a crew out and to learn the boat so we can the Coastal Classic this year. But if I don't get the sanding done I will never make it in time! :-S

So I thought maybe we can have a fun day sanding and I can provide food and some beer to all of you helping hands! Anyone in? If so, when would you be available? Would be very, very, very much appreciated! Please, please please pretty please!

Thanks in advance!

Already got one helper, any one kind enough and with some spare time on their hands?

Maybe Monday could be a good day?

Gary showing me how to create the anchor locker, but by that point I had the attention span of a retarded Goldfish and it went in one ear and out the other....sorta. Actually I haven't created the mock up as I don't have a level and Gary has been out of town on a well deserved vacation!

The following 3 are shots of the stern marking up where I have to cut so we can create a step. This was all done before the explanation of the anchor locker, so I had a brain overflow!

Here is a bit of Chris's work removing anti foul... I think he went a bit far  :wtf:

Also had some help yesterday from my flatmate and Oona. They were quite surprised to how long it takes to get a small area sanded. I completely forgot to take photos yesterday, but the saloon is more than half way there I would say. Plus some sanding has also started were the old nav station was and the new WC will be. If I could only get a few more days with some people helping then it will be done in no time...but if just me, it will take aaaggggeeeeesssss!

Had a great chat with Oona and she is keen to keep coming as she is very interested in learning all that she can. We also talked about training together and building our confidence to hopefully do the SSANZ series together. Well I am hoping she is keen...she seemed keen, we shall see.

Well that's all for now... still on the hunt for my wood. Hopefully I'll have something ordered by the end of the week. Will try and remember to take a photo of how the sanding is coming along... Gary said to me if my finger tips aren't bleeding, then I haven't sanded enough. Well Gary...my fingers have started to bleed! :? But I haven't even finished sanding half the boat!

Hi all,

I thought I would share a podcast interview that I had with a fellow sailor friend that I worked with many moons ago. He is very involved in the sailing scene, but on the other side of the world. I know I tend to waffle on when trying to tell my story  , especially because I'm nervous and not used to interviews :shifty: , but I promise to get better the more I do them! :P

I wont be offended if its too long to listen to, but please do check out the other stuff he has on his site. Enjoy!

Ashley Rogers is an old friend of mine from my Broadreach days, when I worked out of St. Martin on liveaboard sail-and dive-training expeditions. Ashley was a SCUBA instructor and we got to know each other at Broadreach's 'Pad' during the 2009 summer. Though she was living and teaching diving aboard sailing boats - and actually sailing between isalnds and dive sites - she hated it! Originally from Guatemala, Ashley now lives in New Zealand and spoke to me via Skype about how she got into sailing after reading the classic book 'Dove' by Robin Lee Graham, and decided she wanted to give it a go. Now she's preparing her boat for the 2018 edition of the Solo Trans Tasman race, a big event held every four years that sees sailors cross the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to Queensland, Australia. The 2014 edition of the race just got underway on April 22, so folow the fleet here! Ashley will be only the 5th woman to ever attempt the feat. Follow her on her Facebook page, The Solo Challenge.

I had a very special person drop by the shed yesterday and unfortunately I was not there to greet him. :(

John Rea the boat builder that built my boat over 40 years ago!

I had finally tracked him down last week, as I thought he might be interested in seeing the refit of the boat, little did I know this was the first boat he built working for himself! Thus making it a very special boat for him. Wish I could have been there to see his expression of the first sighting.

He got the gran tour by Dale (from Touch of Gloss, as he is in there repainting Prawn Broker) and said he would be back another day to meet me, as he is quite interested in the project. He was also very impressed in what good shape the boat was in....well, what is left of the boat!

Been delaying the build of my interior as I am trying to sort Pacific Kauri marine ply, either BS1088 or AS2272. The only place I have been able to find it is at Whitecliffs, but it still has core gaps in it. Anyone know of any other place?

FNG should be able to help you with Ply, or point you in the best deal direction.

There are quite a few suppliers.

A question though, are you wanting Kauri as a Finish? Because if not and If you are wanting to be very light weight, think about a Ply called Gaboon.

Here is a link that has information on types, sizes available in each type and etc. Not saying this is the best deal supplier, it's just the info that could be helpful.

http://www.gunnersens.co.nz/products/ma ... ywood.html

Also do a Google "Marine Plywood Suppliers NZ"

Gary has helped me in pointing me in the right direction in knowing what to look for. I have learned a lot! But I can't seem to find what I want in the quality I want and I am very stubborn so I am still looking!

I have been to BBS, Plytech, Whitecliffs, Gunnersons, Gibson/Plyman and have phoned many others. I am using the Kauri in areas that I will not paint and am leaving the wood look. Everything else I am using Meranti as it's the strongest.

BBS is offering to put Veneers on Meranti for me, but that is too expensive.

Any ideas?

If it is stamped with BS1088, then it must comply with the standards, which means no voids, so if they are selling anything stamped and it has voids, they should be given a mighty big kick up the rear end.

Being Kauri, you have chosen a fairly expensive material. Although it will most likely be Fijian Kauri and that does not look anything like NZ Kauri. It is very plain, very little grain and sometimes a very light greenish tinge to it. If you want something that looks really nice grain wise when Varnished, maybe Oak or hehe...Ash. But I doubt you will get Marine versions of those.

I know I wont be using NZ Kauri. I actually like the look of the Fijian Kauri, hence why I am trying so hard to get it. I agree they do deserve a kick in the bum... its not BS1088 its AS2272 and after some research AS2772 is supposed to be better than BS1088, but not from what I have seen unfortunately.

Everyone advertises they have it but no one imports it anymore. I think they are sick of dealing with Island life ways and the inconsistency. At least that is what I gathered.

My next choice will be birch, but I would have to stain it as its too light for my liking. which mean more work, although another skill to learn! BBS has a really good exterior grade, that in reality looks like BS1088.

I'm using the Gaboon replacement stuff Gunnersons (?? spelling) sell. Apparently the world is running out of Gabons so they have swapped to what they call 'exotic timbers' or something like that. It's 1088 and has been very nice to use. Apparently 600kg a cube where Gaboon is 550kg a cube so close in weight and at the lighter end of the ply spectrum.

Kauri is heavy.

But being a bloke I am more weight conscious than females who regard colour as more important ;)

If it is stamped with BS1088, then it must comply with the standards,
Unless you purchased it from one outfit a few years ago. They had their own BS1088 stamp so could and were making BS std plys at will

Watched the videos "Does it matter if you are not on the line" I like that one!! One thing you girls have got going for you is you are somewhat smaller and more nimble than a lot of us oldies for working in cramped spaces. I am not looking forward to overhead work I need to do, foam to lie on and a pillow required!

So are you using: CTB-X Gaboon (okume) Marine Plywood BS1088 or Marinelite BS1088?

At another shop, Gaboon is 460kg/m3 and Meranti is 480-500kg/m3 so not much difference in weight and Meranti is more durable. I am only using Kauri 4mm thickness to put in spots I want to keep natural, the rest will be Meranti.

My main concern is strength/durability, price, then look - as I am not painting it and keeping as natural looking as possible. Then lastly the weight, as it doesn't really make a lot of difference on my boat as it's already freaking heavy; it's triple skin Kauri and built really well. And to think they considered that to be a light weight boat in it's day!

Thus buying more expensive and lighter weight ply won't make heaps of difference on my boat. That is why I am going for the more durable/ cheaper ply with a splash of deluxe! :shifty:

Brilliant to see you getting so much help Ash. You are learning heaps doing what you're doing, and it's the only way to go. Do it yourself. Good onya, and keep at it. The Marshall will always be needing a scrub, so I will keep you in work as long as I am racing! :-). Keep the posts going too. Very interesting and good value.. I am learning along with you!! :-)

Marinelite they called it. Nice stuff, good to use, feels grunty yet not too heavy, nice colour and would clear finish well (which means I may do a couple of clear spots to bring in the warmth timber can do). Far better than the untreated CD pine shite that's it's replacing :) The price is damn good... not that I've looked super hard at what's what in that area.

In the big scheme weight isn't real that significant it's worth getting too twisted up over. I've used 3 sheets of 6mm, 1 of 7, 3 of 9 and 1/2 a 4mm. Most of those were chopped so a very large amount is on the floor in offcuts and dust so maybe 1/2 there total weight has gone into the boat. I've probably got a sheet of 6mm to go to finish it all. Oh and there is 11sq/mts of carbon/foam used in lieu of ply.

Oh I did use 1/3 sheet of 6mm Kauri ply (which is noticeably way heavier than the Marinelite) I had lying around to form the stove box/area thing as it felt a lot meatier so I thought it would be better to hang the stove off and probably catch fire a little slower. As I've set fire to every single kitchen I've ever owned fire is something I should be concerned about... as the Wa is about the new one we put in the house this year :)

Good to see your coming along nicely.... the boats not going too bad either ;)
