  1. If anyone is interested I am starting a solo circumnavigation of New Zealand tomorrow, Monday the 7th of September. Leaving from Matiatia, Waiheke Island. Part of the inspiration for this is to raise awareness and funds for the Waiheke Working Sail Charitable Trust which is restoring the 1898 Trading Cutter the 'Kate'. She will be used as a youth sail training vessel. You can follow my voyage on 'Cavatina', a steel Van der Stadt 34, on a tracking page on the Trust's website www.waihekeworkingsail.org

  2. One of the reasons we don't eat out as often as we used to is that the price difference between that and buying something special and cooking it at home has simply become too great.

  3. I would speculate with the election only 6 weeks away the government just does not want to make a decision about something like this. Also I think resources here are stretched as it is so they do not want to add to it. I was told by a police contact that even though time at sea is isolation from the "common sense' perspective, it is not the case legally. You are only considered isolated in NZ once in NZ territorial waters. I remember watching the Zatara videos, they spent ~22 days in quarantine at Fiji before they were cleared in.

  4. Not wishing to aggravate the sin or virtues of the voyage. And I hope within the bounds of the original post that I made about sailing the northern extremes of Canada. I thought there might be an interest in the little town of Okak (sometimes spelt Okkak). Kiwi Roa will likely sail past Okak, found in the northern extremes of Labrador, perhaps even stop there as this is well south of the ‘finish line’ of the passage. Scientists tell us Okak, an Inuit village, has been constantly settled for over 5,000 years. At the turn of last century Okak held the largest Inuit community in Labrador and wa

  5. idlerboat, as a 'super practical person' i am surprised that you would only see the weight factor as an advantage for lithium batts. so, here's a couple of things i have found to be fantastic about mine - - I'm able to stick 125 amps in until they are full - they don't need to be fully charged - they are sitting here at present at 58% while I'm on shore power - battery voltage is incredibly stable throughout the discharge cycle I'm not interested in changing your mind, but it does help to consider all the factors that affect the choice between different battery technology

  6. I second this recommendation and you will find this in the cheapest of Pak'n'Save disinfectants as the active ingredient. I spray my boat, path, deck, roof, etc with it and it works perfectly from a pressure spray mixed 50/50. Takes a week or so to work.....much longer in summer. https://www.paknsaveonline.co.nz/product/5231715_ea_000pns?name=lavender-disinfectant

  7. That fair led has some rough edges on it. No wonder the rope broke, its going to get chaffed through in moments on that... And just look at all that valuable raw material getting shipped off shore without being processed here in NZ. Aren' there sawmills closing cause they can't get logs to chop up?
