  1. This would be no big deal for a lot of you guys but for me my biggest trip as skipper. quote from my facebook page for non boaties so bare with me: “Big thankyou and gratitude to my crew James and Shae, couldn’t have done it without them. For example ,the Raglan bar was no problem, not even breaking, then the wind got up higher than forecast and sea built up and I was seasick . Eventually Shae made a correct call too take down the genoa and put up a smaller jib. I was still capable of steering at that point so pointed into wind and waves while Shae and James went forward. I had rigged

  3. Yes, as long as the internal structure has been built appropriately to accomodate the loads that it will be subjected to. Plus that the board doesn't retract into the hull gives more room internally and some longditudinal stability when at anchor. With 1m draught with the board up I can tuck Gwalarn well away from the madding crowds. Occasionally to the surprise of keelers who don't realise that i am a Centre boarder and want to anchor close-by.

  4. Single cable super common in Europe. There are four of these ferries across the river in Basel, nicely spaced between the bridges you you have additional options when on foot. I used to take this one abotu 3-4 times a week during the summers to get to the watering hole on the other side there where the steps are. A pop up bar each summer, 5 buck beers in the sun At first I thought the double cable might be for a river that runs both ways - don't laugh, there are many in the world, or at least over a tidal channel. But here in Otago I think the second cabl

  5. A GME 403 the orange one, is essentially obsolete- bravo on finding some cheap replacement batteries but one has to wonder how do you value life especially at sea? Why would you not invest in a GPS capable EPIRB, Accuracy improves from 4 sq miles to often less than 100 metres which is comforting to know when you have hit the big red button WHILE stepping up into a life raft more especially so if you are treading water. Plenty of time to ponder how much you saved on batteries for an obsolete EPIRB. THERE SHOULD BE NO SHORT CUTS ON SAFETY. Someone on site found a brand new G

  6. Its all on in the Vendee, PRB skipper has activated PLB, in liferaft. Jean Le Cam almost got him (got in sight of him) but lost him. Race control has diverted FOUR boats, now doing a grid search... Only report from PRB is that he was "taking on water". Sounds like the boat has sunk... Hope it pans out OK. The others can't find him currently. 5 m sea, VHF / AIS MOB signal is easily blocked. Possible issue with trying to do a pick up with foils sticking out. Once of the diverted boats is a non foiler... https://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/news/20687/four-vendee-globe-skippe
