  1. I dragged 9 times after a solo race in Chamberlain Bay and it was not fun, I think there must be a pretty solid bottom there and if the anchor tip doesn't dig in you're toast. At the time I was given an extra length of chain and a 10kg lump of lead, and I still managed to keep dragging. I ended up rafting up to the committee boat for the night. Went straight to CRA and bought an Excel and haven't had an issue since. Even managed fine when we saw 42 knots come through during the Mahurangi week-end we were anchored in the gap at Moturekareka. On another occasion and like the test video link abov

  2. Excel, you wont regret it. Modern anchors are way better at setting and reversing direction. The Anchor geekdom link is worth watching, he has some summaries on You Tube. When you back up an an Excel and it bites, you stop!! KM has them.

  3. you can definitely stay aboard at Norsand and when I was reassembling my boat at Westpark 5yrs ago it was tacitly allowed, ie I stayed aboard and no one complained! You may need more than 2 weeks if you need the hull to dry out from the Osmosis

  4. What is it about "given permission to depart" makes me want to throw my toys out of the cot?

  5. Chamberlains Bay has about a m of broken beer bottles on the bottom so other than being very protected bay from most angles its not great for holding unless you break through that and get a hold of the bottom. A legacy left for us by decades of commercial and pleasure boats just hiffing their bottles over the side. More the merrier when it comes to chain.

  8. Get rid of the plough, doesn't matter whose it is or where it came from. Go see that turkey Grant at Chains Ropes & Bondage or whatever they are called, and get the Crew discount! Any of the high or super high holding power modern designs will deliver you to a new world of bliss when the wind comes up overnight. We use Rocna's, Excel & Manson Supreme on various work boats, and the Sarca Excel on Bad Kitty, changed from a Rocna but only because it fits better without the roll bar. Both excellent anchors. And don't scrimp on chain, I'd add 20% to what you think is ple

  9. Get rid of the plough and get an excel from KM. Don't worry, you actually get it from Chains Ropes and Anchors, and as far as I know KM never actually does any work, so you wont run into him, you'll probably deal with Alan, who is knowledgeable (just don't mention YNZ). Anyway, get the excel, anchor as normal. You wont drag. I got one, now I have to tell everyone to sit down when backing down. A plough will drag all over the bay. It is near impossible to tell if they have set. An excel sets in 1.5 times its length. I have photos of when I trialed it at Arkles at low tide. I'll see if

  10. Send it or give it to me. I've done a couple of these. Otherwise, what I'd recommend would depend on your instrument system. Currently I've been doing a few B&G V60b VHF units - with AIS transponder inside. If you use a B&G system, these let you make DSC calls direct from the MFD. If not, the a Vesper unit might be best...
