  1. This is the story of our purchase and ownership of Stepping Out. It may take some time, will have twists and turns, could move beyond a PG rating from time to time, and will no doubt have real sailors and hardened people of the sea laughing at the incompetence and naivety of beginners. The story is only a year and a bit old at this stage. Who knows how long it will run for. Time will tell. It will be episodic - drop in for a giggle when you need to feel better about something that has gone wrong, because my story will be either dumber or more expensive than yours. At the top lets

  3. Provincial Cowboy is a well known Ross 40 design yacht based in Auckland, New Zealand. The 'Mk 1' Ross 40 is a design that's part of the folklore of the NZ sailing scene of the 80's and 90's. We have lost count of the number of people who stopped by to reminisce about racing they did on PC or her sisterships. The hull and decks were built by Nautec Yachts for first owner Geoff Bagge and the two other initial owners. Her decks were the first from the mould (taken from Not Guilty) and Geoff had to wait some time after receiving the hull. Geoff fitted a typical kiwi cruiser/racer lay

  4. I don't use the VHB at all. The Quilosa has great initial bond, and is only workable for a few mins. I use lots of it, put the window in place, brace if needed to hold there (if its got lots of bend, for example), then use a scraper and then thinners to clean up the ooze. Small bits of timber - or matchsticks - can be inserted until the initial bond is taken, to ensure sealant thickness, then removed and the holes filled - make certain that there is lots of matchstick sticking out for removal!

  5. doubt it needs the chain plates strengthened, probably just needed the packer replaced on the port side, if it had a leak and got wet is was quite common for the ply to become weak and then the bolts moved a bit. Simple 10min job to replace with a new bit 10mm thick. Mainly caused by the fact that the bulk head port to starboard is not quite square from the mould.

  6. Wow, a great example of people not looking before posting. The very answer being in the thread directly below this one.

  7. That's what I'm thinking. With the current outbreak it's not inconceivable the door will be closed again. Also I think there are restrictions on travel between islands within Fiji. All in all we decided next year is a better option.

  8. On a recent ferry trip Pahia to Russell I saw Te Rauparaha sitting on a swing mooring in Russell. Even though she's currently mast-less and in a very sad state she still has the beautiful sweet lines of the Ross 40 and is just screaming out for someone to give her a little TLC.
