  1. At the online race clinic last night, they covered some draft plans for a virtual Cat3 inspection and possible temporary extension for recently expired certs. It will certainly help to avoid the mad rush that will occur when we come out of lockdown.

  2. Anyway, we should get back to bikes !! Rodger Freeth was a man I admired from back in the day. He was my Physics tutor in 197? Was always interesting. It did seem slightly weird seeing him racing. He was never spectacular like Croz, he just put his head down and got on with it. He certainly stirred up the natives when he turned up with this !!

  3. Scenario I would enjoy: GD : HI, is that the NZ Government? Look I've decided to have the cup in NZ, can you give me $100m? NZG: Yeah nah. That was last month and we've got our hands full right now. But all the best. Cheers.

  4. Many of these stories create a bittersweet feeling making me feel both awestruck & inspired and a pathetically inadequate amateur (which I know I am but don’t need reminding). In terms of feel-good enjoyment I still rate this as one of my fav reads and hard to beat:

  5. Rodger was a real gentleman - i recall going to a midweek test day at Baypark and noticed his van and small entourage in the pits with him out on the track on his (1300?) Mcintosh . as i was getting my own bike ready i noticed him looking over everytime he went past the start/finish straight, and his crew (busy giving laptimes etc) would in turn look (glare) at me too... Just as i was about to go out on the track myself Roger pulled in and rode over to me to tell me about a patch of sand in the braking zone at the end of the back straight, then rode back out past his crew and carried on . Very

  7. Just in case any of you are into classic car racing as I am, Goodwood Revival is on this coming weekend and I believe they will be showing it on youtube so even non members can watch, it apart from LeMans classic is the best racing in the rarest (all genuine) cars you will ever see, and yes there are bikes racing too, the cars and drivers are stars but everybody gets into the spirit of the event and dresses in period gear

  8. I used to read on a tablet, but it really messed with my vision. I got horrible eye strain looking at the bright screen for that long. I bought a kindle paperwhite (backlit one) and it's been fantastic. Much easier on the eyes than a traditional LCD screen, and battery life is an order of magnitude better than what you'd get on any tablet.

  9. Ice Bird is his most dreary read, the others reflect him much better -met him when preparing his last boat -the biography that Rebecca wrote an intro to is a good read-he never lost his eye for the "ladies" right into old age 😉

  10. My brother was inspired by David Lewis to do a trip to Antarctica on his boat Snow Petrel with my Dad and younger brother as crew. My younger brother did a documentary on it and my Dad wrote a book. It's a pretty cool story of a real adventure on a super low budget but my eldest brother is a master mariner and really left no stone unturned in his preparation. For anyone interested the documentary Snow Petrel downunder is now on YouTube in 3 parts and the book is available online(or I have a copy of the book and DVD if anyone wants to borrow them). Its best to watch the movie

  11. I've read Ice Bird. Was kind of left with the whole 'why?' question (he explained that himself), but the whole thing very much seemed like masturbating with a cheese grater - slightly amusing but mainly painful. He didn't take any form of heating, if I remember correctly, because he was in a hurry to leave... There were so many little things he could have done to make the trip easier or safer, but he mainly wanted to see how much he could endure. A fair bit, it turns out.

  12. I think the Piedys are talking to Yachting NZ directly about a class dispensation for lifelines, as the safety they provide can more practically be achieved with harnesses, tethers and jackstays. I think it would be awesome to have a fleet of Piedys sending it up each year. The bay will definitely know when they arrive!

  13. I've always been a Rossi fan. These are a couple of interviews he did after announcing his retirement. One certainly has to admire Marquez' talent but I can't say I'm a fan. Rossi's comment about him is amusing.

  14. The trailer works!! September 11, 2021. Bundle the whole family into the car, hook the boat on the back, and head south. An hour and a tiny bit later, we arrived at our destination, Lake Ngaroto in Te Awamutu. Boat and trailer towed absolutely perfectly, not a wobble, no clunks or bangs, infact at one point I forgot it was there, and cut a corner very, very fine. Unfortunately, the racing wasn't quite as good, because bundling a bunch of kids into a car just after sunrise isn't quick. We Arrived in time to see the end of the first race, and after rigging, finally got on the
