  1. Update: was at Maimai Bay, Rotoroa last week and again saw a boat unloading two huge dogs onto the beach. This time I phoned the island and within 3 minutes a ranger arrived! They’re very appreciative of people letting them know. The number to call is 09 283 0849.

  4. In my opinion, everything the council has done, including Panuku, is all illegal, it is just that no one has the time nor money to take these scumbags to court. Glad I am out of Westhaven, never to return if I can help it.

  5. Also to address the original title of this thread, Westhaven only came under the council and therefore public in the 90s, prior was part of the Harbour Board like Okahu Hardstand and both run with a tighter control on costs.

  6. I tend to agree broadly AA10 , with two points that have to be borne in mind -the yachties paid for Westhaven Marinas upfront before construction via debentures (the original ones where I started sailing) it is gradually becoming Gulf Harboured check out Beaumont street the few remaining marine businesses are clinging on despite ridiculous rentals, many have already left. We have medical supply companies, corporate travel etc already in Westhaven drive. Orams/Ariadne only managed to get the new yard done by partnering with Panuku the council formed money making landlord.

  7. This summer we've spent some time exploring the places along the Northland coast that previously we've just raced past in the night doing the coastal. Last week we spent some time in Whangaruru and what an absolute gem of a place it is, great weather, lovely beaches and unlike the BOI hardly a soul about. Of course, I had to do a little flying, so here's a few scenes and views across the harbour from Saturday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6WVXf5-vCk

  8. Parking (white spaces) is time limited during the week (P120), but the limit deliberately ends at 4pm to not disrupt crew parking. Personally, I want to see more parking for bikes, as it's a great way for people to get to their boats. As for behaviour, I'd be happy enough if people in cars would observe the speed limits.

  9. Hauraki gulf: Northeast swell rising to 4 metres. Significant and hazardous waves expected, with the potential for hazardous rip currents. Mmm lovely.

  10. Well done the work they are doing there needs protecting- turning the island into a jewel of the gulf, without ignoring its past, and the good efforts of the sallies.

  12. Same at Ponui last week. Old guy, small dog, dinghy pulled up directly in fromnt of the "Private Property, No Fires, Camping, or Dogs" sign. Off lead meander along the beach and back... I think its a mix of causes. Ignorance, pets as substitute children, assumption of an inherent right to do what you like. Same stuff that drives other mildly selfish antisocial behaviour like parking in disabled carparks on on the grass berm (pet peeve). Fish is right - confrontation is not useful. Education/Information is more useful. Refering infringements to an appropriate authority is

  13. Dogs should be allowed ashore if they are on a leash. I take my dog everywhere on the boat. Usually all the parks have walking trails.
