  2. This summer has been particularly bad. Here in the Marlborough Sounds, i've had two ocassions in two weeks where boats did not adhere to Port to port or even know green and red markers which meant I took evasive actions and then got the why did you do that look. Lots of shiny new Stabi's with no clue out on the water. The bay we live in has a strict 5 knot limit which is broken each and every day by jet skis and boats, harboar master useless, education = mixed results. The problem is we live waterfront which means we could be a target so I'm inclined not to take any action and live with th

  3. Read it this morning, sounds super dodgy. The NZ navy would never order a boat to sea in a storm, then spend 8 hours in the most atrocious conditions trying to get to the site that would take less than an hour in usual weather to rescue them.

  4. How else do you suppose we get rid of them? the virus hasn't worked... was hoping that would knock a few off (although admittedly the jab isn't too bad at that, mycarditus fits so nicely with that demographic) Some of us in Auckland aren't cashed up, and are keen to get rid of the twats so we can enjoy our environment in peace. I just think its the South Island's turn to deal with them. We've been locked up with them since August.. and the ones that we did try getting rid back then of caused all sorts of problems. Fair's fair now

  5. Some freaky stuff on the weiti river last night too. At least a 0.5m surge (properly measured on my tide level gauge) and some strong currents. At least 5 surge cycles. I sat on the end of the wharf until 3am watching it all. No damage anywhere here that i can see.

  8. I can only assume you all have seen this story. I did not hear about it till early hrs of this morning. So late afternoon, around 5.30PM our time, an underwater Volcano in the Tongan Island group has gone up with a bang. Serious, not being over dramatic here. Tsunamis have been washing ashore over the Islands and officials are very concerned for Peoples safety. I viewed a Satellite image in the early hrs of this morning of the explosion. The Shock wave around it moved out for thousands or square kilometres. Then the most amazing image. I though at first it was just due to the picture bein

  11. Officially, just the presence of dogs (even on leashes) can scare and change the behavior of ground dwelling birds. Unofficially, if you are going straight for a poo and taking the dog away again, it is going to have substantially less impact on bird behaviour than letting it roam off leash, and / or from end to end of the beach. But then, can't you train you dog to poo on the boat (noting I'm not a dog owner). Don't get me started on boat cats though. I don't understand that.

  12. back to the computer. The Sistema box wasn't working out. It took up a lot of real estate and looks naff, so with a bit of spare time on my hands, I pulled it all apart, got an offcut of 5mm acrylic from the local acrylic guys (free!) and put together an enclosure that will sit in an existing recess in front of the chart table. The recess is just over 400mm long, 165mm high and 35mm deep. The new enclosure is sized to fit snug at one end and provide space to store the keyboard and mouse next to it. It is removable so it can come home for software updates etc. The RPi now has
