  1. Has anyone ever heard of pilotage? You know, when you look out the window, look at the colour of the water, the depth, location of the land and understand your geographical position with it? You don't need a chart for any of that. Not in an emergency. Name a passage in the Huaraki Gulf or Norhtland Coast you couldn't complete without a chart? We don't have tidal rips, there are no currents setting east or west like the English Channel. We don't have tides like Brittany. The one tidal gate in NZ is at D'Urville Island, long way from the Gulf. Any passage the in the gulf can

  3. I'm not big on his conspiracy theory mainly because the chance of a disparate group of people keeping a lid on something like this would be about zero. Nzers are by and large fair and decent people including those working on the ice who are also bonded together by the harsh environment. Sailors share a common adversary against the elements and many of the navy crew would have " alternative" mates if not family being from NZ. Plenty would sympathise with the adventurous spirit. Someone would have cracked if the Berserk story had substance, but no one has. You have to ask yourself, who

  4. Maybe google Carrington event? Only 160 years ago and only recognised at all because there were primitive electrical systems. Similar events prior to that would not have been noticed necessarily. Another Carrington event now could/would wipe out all satellites and most computer systems. You would need the paper charts to get home to find out that your bank now had no record of your wealth as they stopped keeping paper records years ago...

  5. Interesting post from Jarle on facebook just now replying to the stuff article. I actually did a bit of sail work for him before both voyages. He was a likable guy but clearly a cowboy who loved defying the rules. https://www.facebook.com/101634540870/posts/10159564377035871/?sfnsn=mo Text pasted below. Hi sailors and adventurers out there! Here comes todays conspirational from a New Zealand journalist who contacted me in regarding to speak about the Berserk incident. Interesting reading for those who do not believe in a government cover - up. Lee Kenny writes tha

  7. Make the call from the main vessel, then grab your bag and wait till someone is in sight, then fire off a flare. Had uniden, suppose to be water proof,Biggest waste of money, not even shower proof.

  8. I’ve got a Uniden budget yellow job that does all of the above , I think ? critereia is it meets Cat3 and we use it for listening to race comms during starts . Range is woeful though we couldn’t raise a boat in a recent race that was only 5 miles away on 5W setting …wouldn’t recommend it in an emergency situation unless it’s for close range .

  9. I'm curious, I've got 3 VHF's and 3 PLB's, but are you going to be sailing out of cell phone range? Channel 16 is so full of fluff now I didn't turn my VHF on on the last 7 day cruise. We can spend a pile of $$$ and really clutter out boats up with things that are a good idea, but never actually get used.

  11. Have done this race several times and always an awesome weekend. Sunday morning return race can be a bit tough sometimes. Going back a few years all boats were given a bottle of rum and a bottle of Coke, both with no tops on at the Saturday night results party.

  13. Update: was at Maimai Bay, Rotoroa last week and again saw a boat unloading two huge dogs onto the beach. This time I phoned the island and within 3 minutes a ranger arrived! They’re very appreciative of people letting them know. The number to call is 09 283 0849.

  14. Thanks Janine, great info. The renovation was amazing and it is reasonable condition which is tribute to Simon and Ants. I thought it went overseas but not sure which place exactly except Airlie Beach for one. We were around Auckland for Xmas and spent NY period around Kawau with my son's young family aboard - 7 in total. The weather could have been better but we survived! Everywhere we go someone tells us they sailed on it, drank rum or even had their first spew on it, it is great to discover the history. Now back in Tauranga after our cruise ready for fishing, overnighting and midweek r
