  3. Do you guys know that there are already rules for boat ID? Often local body rules, Auckland ones say a boat must have a name on it, clearly readable, min 90mm high lettering. Jet skis have to have a number. Again, the rules are there, just need enforcing.

  4. Yep. That and the enforcement/policing of existing rules would work fine. No need for yet more regulation. The harbour masters and maritime nz can already fine people.

  5. doesn't work to acheive what? Where? Under what circumstances? I agree that badly drafted law and poor enforcement may lead to poor outcomes. Also, legislation and regulation is not the 100% cure - education, social pressure, the power of insurance companies to require proof, all contribute. But every year we see posts like the op - a constant stream of complaints about poor boat-handling, navigation, colregs compliance, harbour bylaw compliance. Just as there is a claim that legislating licincing and registration don't work, its obivious the status quo is not working either.

  6. Clevedon to Te Kouma and back for the weekend. As usual for us a mixed bag of minor catastrophes and simple pleasures. Winds were light and shifty and we motored a bit. Still, little blue penguins, fish jumping everywhere in Te Kouma harbour, nice sunset, good wine. Highlights include untangling a spinnaker from the furled headsail - blown inside-out by a 180 degree shift in a 20 second squall. Also, we cannot get up the Clevedon river at low tide plus 2 hours. A keel trench testifies.

  7. This is very simple: Android tablets = all have GPS. No need for the more expensive cellular version unless you want it to double as a phone. So, your new Samsung tablet will be fine. IOS (Apple) tablets = GPS only with cellular versions (thanks Apple...not!) Apple simply want you to pay more for the GPS version hence their sneaky ploy of only inserting the GPS with cellular models Here is a good article on choosing a tablet for sailing navigation: https://sailingkerguelen.com/en/best-gps-tablet-navigation-android-apple/
