  1. Hello, The course is currently in process to be accredited by YNZ, however it has been accepted for the Auckland - Fiji, Brisbane-Noumea, Sydney-Hobart races to date No it is not free! I donate my time for the course to help yachties. A small profit was made from last years course which we donated to the cyclone relief fund in Fiji At $275 for a full day course including practical stations - it is extremely good value Regards Dr Dave

    Medical Kits

Guys, Before this degenerates into chaos with various anecdotes regarding allergies or side effects of the drugs that I have recommended, a few points: I was asked by SSANZ for some advice regarding the Medical kit for the Two Man Round NZ race I posted my reply on crew.org because I thought that I may help other people however these are my personal recommendations - take them or leave them! EVERY drug, including simple ones such as Aspirin have side effects. It is neither possible to create a Medical kit that is 100% free of side effects nor to not include a drug that so

Hi Guys, Antibiotic shelf life for orals is variable but generally the companys state Augmentin is 3 years and Doxycycline 4 years if dry and stored below 25C. On M1 for us dry is hard to do.... As I said I am happy to redo the Cat Med lits for YNZ if you know anyone there who wanted me to do so Happy to help Cheers Dr Dave

  8. Hi, I was asked by Jon Henry off Danaide for some advice regarding the Med kit for RNZ race My reply is below for anyone interested. I have previously offered to look at the Med kit contents for YNZ as I am frequently asked for advice on what to take offshore. Each boat should take all the Cat 2 gear that is on the list My personal recommendation to add to that is as follows: -"Field Dressings" Med and large - 2 of each (they are a military style bandage that you open, slap on and tie around the limb in one shot) - very good for big wounds or when its rough/wet and hard to thin
  9. Hi Bardy, There are VERY few people who can afford a truly two handed boat in NZ. In the RNI , from memory I think only Andar was truly set up for two handing. Personally I would love one of Rob's (Shaw) 40's set up for 2 handing This being the case most people ( like us) compromise with a fully crewed boat. Our biggest problem was the Autopilot not being able to handle her in more than 5 knots which made it more of a mission Cheers
  10. Thank you VERY much. I will pm you Cheers Dave
  11. No, Do you know contact details of Pepe please?
  12. Hi Guys, Does anyone have any/ know of any footage of leg 2 RNI apart from Rob Shaw's 30 sec? Cheers
  13. You could try ringing Craig Partridge in Kerikeri. Ph 09 4073012 . Craig built Blackout (black of course) and she still looked great last time I saw her. She is now 10 years old. Also M1 is of course black and just had a repaint during her extreme makeover. She looks great too Cheers Dave
  14. Hi Wheels, Yes Apparently a reasonable buzz. Where I am it is mixed with Orange Juice because of "the Intervention" ( keeping Alcohol away from the Aboriginal settlements) Effects are dose dependent - you need a reasonable amount Cheers Dave
  15. Hi Bimini Babe, I cant comment on using it for rot as it is not my area of expertise, however Poisoning is. Ethylene Glycol is poisonous when ingested. It causes a type of coma (hyperosmolar) which requires ventilation and ICU care. It's common in American alcoholics as anti freeze is cheaper than wine.... It can be absorbed through your skin too so wear gloves when you use it Cheers
  16. Hi, I think it depends on boat and number of crew. With 2 of us on M1 we ran the 1st reef and left mouse lines in for 2nd and 3rd. We left knotted reefs at tail of boom and it was easy to then mouse and run them My 2 cents worth Cheers

    Boat shoes

Mostly (but not always) the smell in shoes is fungal growth Its worth a try buying some Antifungal SPRAY at chemist ( e.g. Daktarin) and spraying it in them Works for me Cheers
  18. I think that making comments on a race that you haven't done ( maybe you have?) is fraught with hazard. I assume that your intentions are to promote fleet safety, but people are always going to state "didn't see you there", "if you know so much why don't you do it" etc and you risk coming across as a tool With this as a preamble , we should be looking at things that we can do better !. Can the boats be better prepared? 2. Can the crew be better prepared? 3. Can the Committee do a better job They all had to do a 500 mile qualifyer - should it be longer? You may sail a 1000 miles to
  19. Guys, where are there the provisional results on the web? I have found the live tracker, but would like to see where they sit on handicap Thanks
  20. Thanks guys for all the information We will decide what to do with her soon Cheers
  21. Thanks Guys, So my understanding of the cost is : 1.GST on boat and delivery cost ( @ 10%) 2. No duty payable as boat is built in NZ No other costs or taxes? Cheers
