They are not limited to the Tamaki, anytime i've cleaned that slime my wetsuit is always covered in the critters, to me they look a like a miniature shrimp. The really nasty Sea Lice always seemed to live at the warm waters edge, a zone to be avoided as kids. Infestations of Microscopic NoSeeUm Jelly Fish are a problem sometimes, if you get hit by those you are in for an uncomfortable few days, Antihistamine helps.

In a Bugatti and a Skoda kinda way
Duh, yeah I Kinda got that wrong, its what happens when you don't wear your glasses

Some of you might find this YW Diamond restoration project interesting, apparently this boat was owned by Chris Bouzaid back in the day.
I see Puffs profile photo looks to be a similar boat.

Considering the time money and passion put into that vessel you can understand wanting to recover at least the materials cost.
Unfortunately the market seems to be brutal on unfinished boats.

Think a pointless unhelpful comment on a tech question thread suggesting a change to junk rig might be the primary reason?
Plus in general junks are slow, look stupid, and have average windward performance...
My wife's uncle did a 7 year circumnavigation in Junk rigged boat, including the Aleutians, Alaska etc. They are a niche cruising rig with pros and cons, not for me but I think they have their place.
-
Yeah Frank, if you dont have a cunning ham, you have a stupid pig!
I see what you did there
-
Yup, if you want to go slow, look stupid and have average windward performance.
I'm sure Greg Elliot would love to see a 10.6m junk rigged Elliott too, he would be so proud.
You have just insulted 1.2 billion Chinese

Yes fair point about when it is rolled up IT, probably not worth the worry.
- Fish the first thing I did after buying the boat was rig a cunningham on the Main, I'm thinking about doing the same for the genoa, old habits die hard
-
Thanks for the help, all good points, we are still figuring out the boat and rig so we will continue play around with it.
Setting it with a pole would be worth the hassle on a longer trip like to the Barrier etc.

We used the MPS (do they still call them that ?) last Sunday, it was a broad reach and it would not set presumably because it was blanketed by the main. The boat is masthead rigged and the tack was attached at the base of the pulpit, the boat not having a prod. The week prior we flew it with the wind just aft of the beam and it set perfectly. If we are not to fit a prod is the answer to use the spinnaker pole ? This would sort of defeat the purpose of an MPS for me, the sail is made by the Willis loft and its had little use so its mint, any suggestions ?

Does anyone ease the luff tension on the RF genoa after a sail ? or do you leave it fully tensioned all the time. I'm just wondering if backing off the halyard would increase the life of the sail.

Go to Jefa rudders and pick one you like, plenty of drawings on their site
Great website that !

I think the modern hondas are air cooled if you are worried about water cooling.
-
IT is correct.
Cast iron is difficult to weld. For a start you need the right electrodes - I have seen people using standard mild steel electrodes on cast iron with predictable results. Could be wrong here but from memory it is desirable to heat the workpiece red hot prior to welding as this ensures good infusion into the repair. But a man at a welding school will know all this of course so I think you can have confidence in his repair.
I looked into this type of repair for a volvo part and even purchased the rods at $36 each !. They have a very high nickle content hence the $ On you tube the technique seems tricky with pre heating and cleanliness critical even in experienced hands there was a risk of cracking as the Cast iron cooled. Brazing seems less technique dependant with good results I recall my fathers bench vise soldiered on for many years after being over tightened and snapping in two.

Hi mcp, I have a complete ( was running) MD2030 on the shelf at work, I am aiming to rebuild it with a kit of pistons/rings/bearings from the UK, it’s about £400 . So I am hoping for around $3000 NZD by the time I’ve added any machine work needed, water pump, etc
its destined to replace my 30yo, Volvo 2002, which starts/runs/sounds sweet after thousands of hours use. It just won’t die !
id love to hear how you get on with the MD2030 rebuild if indeed you do it.
despte hearing endless reports of dud Volvo’s, I really rate my 2002 !
Likewise my 40 year old MD7B and its raw water cooled !

Rebuilding an engine is not that hard provided you work systematically but it sounds like the motor is sweet. Dont worry about it and just go sailing, you'll find plenty of places to spend that spare coin!
What he said ! If its reliable , has sufficient power and is a sweet runner, just maintain it well and keep the money, if it aint broke dont fix it.
If you are desperate for a new engine try and get one that, does not involve a propellor change, a bigger shaft dia or shifting the exhaust position. None of these are show stoppers but they can add substantial extra cost, there are probably other avoidance factors.

If you go the Lanoline route you might find this a better option, it seems to set semi-hard and waxy, might hang on better.

Was just about to but some of this stuff. Guess I won't bother.
Tried Lanolin over the years, I agree its a waste of time, I have also used Engineers marking ink (two coats) and found it to be somewhat effective, still not a patch on Propspeed obviously but if you are on a budget ? I have tried antifoul, it never seemed to work.
-
How often did you dive on the boat?
This summer in Whangarei has been real bad for Barnies.
I antifouled with ultra in January and dive every 3 weeks, still have to flick of barnacles. Just the nature of Whangarei harbour.
If you haven’t had a swim for 3mths in Whangarei (or Opua) I reckon you are doing ok.
I have noticed the same thing re Barnacles on a boat in the Tamaki and another at Cocklebay, the usual small pimple sized fellas just fall off. but the larger ones about the size of a fingernail are just diabolical this year.
They grow roots through the AF, aggregating like sheet concrete to any Rubber, Metal, paint or Composite surface, maybe the answer is to ask the bank manager for a mortgage and Prop Speed the entire hull
I hope it is not an new type .

I see another old salt of Kiwi Yachting has passed on at 88.

The whole canal boating thing sounds cool, is there a risk you just go from pub to pub ?
-
Thanks, looks like it is predominately in the W sector for the next few days.

For you experienced cruisers (Matt , BP ? ) what have you found to be a good wind direction when returning from Noumea ?
