    SailGP

Was interesting - in an interview he suggested they would increase the number of boats (probably within 5 years) and then maybe NZ could possibily have a boat !!
  2. In the past they have been quite helpful in checking out and have been willing to come to various marinas in recognition that the dock they had was bit of a shocker and not very boat friendly. Great news one can check in as well here as it is was a bit embarrassing that overseas vessels couldnt check into the biggest city in NZ and home to a good percentage of the boating population.
  3. The backup at Predictwind is very good. I have an external aerial with 3 m of cable -never used if anyone is interested...
  4. The sensors are very suspectible to any fumes - fly spray , cleaning materials etc let alone water. You must make sure any hatches above are properly sealed or closed when it rains as it all can cause problems . I recently replaced a sensor and as the connecting wire was still in perfect order just cut and resoldered the new sensor (BEP) but apparently even resoldering isn’t good and you should replace the whole wire which when it is routed through all sorts of corners is a pain

    Gas storage

I have a couple of fibreglass Aussie 9 kg bottles that came with the boat - have tried to titrate but find it a pain ( maybe I aren’t doing it quite right) which is a shame as they don’t corrode , are lighter and you can see the lpg level . Did manage to get one filled previously in Tonga but on last trip even in French Polynesia and Samoa they seemed quite strict on what bottles they filled ( though I didn’t try to get the glass one filled ) . Shame as they are so well suited for the marine environment

    Yacht Winch Drill

I have one as a backup in case my electric jib furler dies - have tested it and certainly beats doing it manually though think it would struggle a bit with a mainsail our size though will try it just for interest !
  8. if You aren’t able to service it yourself you will likely have to take the whole stove to someone - most service people don’t like to do on boat calls these days due to regulations around the gas fitting .

    Dyneema Rigging

Would like to second what KM said about the cover - needs to be a tight fit so you can see exactly where any abrasion is occurring - in our case we have a dyneema sleeve which wasn’t a lot cheaper than the actual shroud but the last cover lasted 11 years and nowhere had it worn through so well worth it and underneath everything was in mint condition even after all that time. Our inners don’t have any protection except a UV paint as the cap shrouds mainly protect them from abrasion.

    Dyneema Rigging

Have commented before on this - P’zazz has dyneema rigging which was replaced after 11 years (2 years ago)still in good order . The weight saving is significant but as already pointed out you need to be careful of chafe so maybe with an overlapping Genoa could be an issue but with self tackers fine . Good stuff these days is pre stretched although after big loads initially will probably need re tensioning . Fantastic stuff and similar cost ( in our case) to S.S. Don’t know why more boats don’t use it - My insurance was happy to let us get same age as S.S. out of it before replacing .

    Yanmar

I guessed on the SD 20s as I have heard of people upgrading from those so assumed they had the same problem - didn’t say they were current models but there are a lot of SD 40/50’s out there with that potential problem ... interesting that the agents weren’t interested in what I was doing as it wasn’t a Yanmar certified modification .Think if you talk to engineers who service Yanmars they will acknowledge this is a weak point in those models

    Yanmar

The SD series of sail drives ( 20,30 ,40 and 50 ) are prone to cone clutch slipping - this is a well documented problem with multiple threads on forums complaining about having to regularly redo the cones which is a pain plus if they start slipping at the wrong time ie under load. I found a Canadian engineer who designed a retro fit kit for them ( modified thrust bearing and a few pieces) - he is very knowledgeable on the problem and has sold around 200 of these kits with no reported further problems . I installed them on my set up earlier this year and so far no problems - last time I went
  13. Be interesting to hear what they say about a local agent and pricing -probably is still early days I imagine re production etc .... But certainly amazing technology and unless it was priced way out of touch it would be hard not see it getting a lot of traction ..
  14. Very interesting technology - sounds too good to be true ....

  19. I have a slot for one person or a couple on a well equipped 14m Cat for a 2 month (arrive back in NZ end of Oct approx) trip from Tahiti to NZ stopping at Surrouw ,Samoa and Fiji . Costs are a daily allowance for food - you would need to make your own way to Bora Bora around mid August or slightly earlier if you wanted some time in Bora Bora. For further details mail me on pzazz@myiridium.net Cheers
  20. I looked at them when I was considering a home solar set up and thought they could be good for boats - the downside being slightly heavier (10%) than LA and slightly bigger but they do help bridge the gap to Lithium - would be good to hear from someone who has installed them on a boat
  21. Looks great Adrian - maybe catch you in Fiji mid Sept + on our way down if you are around ....
  22. Sat phone plus accessories incl outside aerial with approx 10m lead(never been mounted) , 12v and 230v charging... Offers....? ph 027 623 8366 for further details

  25. I have a BEP solenoid with alarm detector /sensor for inside - quite handy as you have the sensor below the stove and hence should know if there is a gas leak or gas left on with no flame. Did have it go off continually a few years ago for no reason and had to replace the unit which was disappointing but been behaving ok since then
