No sadly it is a replace job. bugger dont mind replacing them but its the time factor removing, working whilst on mooring, then taking it away for new ones to be cut, then returned to the boat, fitted....and hoping for a good day to do it in. Any ideas wheels on what weather proof material to use to cover the window openings of the H28 after I remove all the perspex windows to have a new set cut in case it rains & I am unable to return while weather is foul. best I remove all at once to save the 8 return trips if I have to do it per window.   4. I discovered an area of the bow deck that appears to be softer than the surrounding area and am wondering what the best practise would be for a repair. Im assuming that this area is glassed over marine ply though Im not 100% sure (1981 Compass H28) Does anybody have any ideas on what may lie beneath the glass? My 1st question is this: Should I attempt a repair by lifting the deck covering, opening up the deck GELCOAT + fibreglass and repair from the top OR should I avoid damaging the gelcoat on the deck and repair from beneath (which I presume would take a bit of thought to excecute.) /

  12. Has anybody (besides IT ) tried using the free opensource plotting package, OpenCPN ? I found the link to it while reading an article by IT on "A-Guide-to-Electronic-System-Selection" on the Neptunes Gear site here . Scroll down to the paragraph on Plotters It took me a while to read & understand it all to get it to work on my desktop but after it got going ...wow! I now have the charts covering almost the entire pacific rim comprising of: from the Ross sea in Antarctica up to the entire NZ coast, then across the tasman sea covering the entire Australian coastline up to the Phillipi
  13. I only have 1 solar shower onboard which is obviously too few hence problem. yep I like that idea wheels. This would be similar to a califont & it will provide instant heat when required. I need to design a suitable structure to support the coil and fit safely & securely onto the kerosene stove and be easily removed.( kerosene is cheaper to run than portable gas canisters ) It would have to look a whole lot more flash than the one in the pic I found online or the quality control dept (the missus ) will never allow it onboard.   19. I dont suppose any fizz boat drivers who read this article would consider it very important doing the appropriate boating courses even after this disaster. The driver clearly had no idea of the terrain he was entering and doing so at what must have been a very high speed of knots ....... he is lucky to be alive including his crew.   22. And????? They tend to run cold anyway. Really, as long as you have water flowing, that's about all you can do. Adding a gauge may only add anxiety Cold ? hows that wheels? It feels pretty hot inside the engine bay + engine is warm/hot to the touch even though I can see the sea water spitting out the exhaust. Engine hrs =257hrs since installed new. There has been no over heat alarm so far thank goodness but Im used to looking at the car gauges knowing that a temp gauge "should" be there on the MD2020D ( because its a motor engine is'nt it?).   23. thanks IT. would appreciate assistance from those in the know about what would work. what is a Is this a volvo product or universal equivalent and how do you fit it. Is it something I can do with my limited knowledge but given directions? The MD2020D does have a "hot water" plug option on the front just to the left of the heat exchanger.Can the sensor fit there?
  24. Can anyone explain why the Volvo MD2020D does not have a temperature sensor and gauge fitted? ( Well mine does not and the local VP agents in Opua cant explain it either) A google search produced no answer. It does have an over heat alarm they say but why wait for an alarm before taking action? Im concerned that I cannot monitor the temp ( like is it reaching operating temp?) and am seeking solutions from VP to install one manually. your thoughts please....
