  1. Having been in Samoa during a cyclone (land based) I would be more concerned about the timing. Seems a bit late in the season but that is their decision.
  2. What a lot of people don't realise is that a large number of yachts on the harbour are worth a lot less than a second hand car.
  3. Think we have all had moments we'd rather forget, just not quite that bad.
  4. If you want to see how the chanel is marked and watch boats passing through take a walk up to Musick Point on Sunday afternoon and it will all become very clear.
  5. If you are not comfortable with it don't go. Frighten the family and you can forget about family cruising. in the future.
  6. Boating NZ has been going backwards for some time or at least since the new editor took over.

Two shark attacks in one week. Maybe a good idea not to swim off the back of the boat.
  8. Agree Tuts can be a bit nerve racking in a big easterly. The rocks to the north side of the entrance seem to draw you in.

Did a fishing charter out of Hamilton Island a couple of years ago. The whole area looks good cruising grounds. Wouldn't mind doing a charter in the area some time in the future.
  10. Was in a cylone in 1991 up in Western Samoa, cyclone Val. The thing that puts the sh..ts up you is the noise. It is like a jumbo jet parked outside the window. Just when you think it cant increase in strength, it winds up a bit more. I was on land, would hate to have been at sea. One Aussie trawler in the area was lost.
  11. And they are worried about fan worm finding it's way into the BOI.
  12. I think a lot comes down to size of cockpit. Wheels in small cockpits such as a Cav 32 are a pain. Hull and keel design play a big part in downwind handling in hard running conditions. I prefer tiller steering but then I have only had limited time on wheels. Have gone through Tiri Passage heading south in a fresh N/W with a wheel steer 40fter next to me and he seemed to be having to work bloody hard to hold his course. Guess all boats are different.
  13. The Aussies love them. They even put them on the cav 32's
  14. There's a photo of a raftup of Raven 26's in the PYBC clubrooms. Photo was taken in Bon Accord harbour I think on a anniversary weekend. Can't remember how many, but there were a lot. Somebody stole the wheel off the only wheel steer R26 and hoisted it up the owners mast, the owner shall remain nameless. Not knowing it was up his mast he left with a cresent spanner to steer with.
  15. Sounds like Western Springs all over again. There is no way I would tie any of my halyards back, let em clatter all night long.
  16. Just about cheaper to buy a new EPIRB with 10 year battery life.
  17. Come in Wheels. All is forgiven.
  18. Spinlock seem to be ok on our boat. Surprised at load on vang.
  19. What design 34fter are you on PeteG. Always curious as to what boats head up to the south Pacific each year. So many theories as to what is best.
  20. Have used Braso and a soft cloth. Works well.
  21. Have you considered a Davidson 35. There's a well set up one for sale down in Welly, has circumnavigated and has a lot of gear on board. Have a look at trade me. I owned one for a few years and loved it. My wife still tells me I shouldn't have sold it.
