Doesn't look much like a hurricane hole to me. Looks pretty exsposed. Maybe they wanted a new fleet. Was in Samoa in 1990 when cyclone Val went through. Topped at 120 knots. Like having a 747 parked outside with the engines on full noise. Lots of locals took to hiding in water tanks. Was interesting to see how sustained wind like that slowing dismantles a building, including the one I was in.

Will keep an eye out. If you come across a 9.2 Sweet Chariot don't hesitate to make yourself known. Looks a bit different to a standard 9.2 as has a stern scoop.

Agree there is not much to a Sabre rig. Very light and rigger wouldn't have to remove or replace as you could take all the old to him so no fitting costs. Can't realy compare with a 30ft keeler Think i paid just under 4k a few years ago for mine all fitted with new rigging screws on 30ft.

Worst customer service i have had was giving a V drive gearbox to an agent for repair. Went in as a V drive, when i went to pick it up, it was a straight drive. Long story short it ended up in court. Surprisingly it was judged the i owed them no money for repairs made.

Which 9.2 did you buy. I'll keep an eye out for you if you are in the Hauraki Gulf this summer.

The rescueME EPIRB1 has a 10 yr battery life. Just wondering what the class 3 is that they claim. Is it an electrical class or does that mean Cat 3 and 48hr plus operating life. Would that meet Cat 3 requirements

Went to an evening at Panmure YBC about 35 years ago give or take a few years and the speaker had just returned from the US. He had sailed his Raven 26 from Wellington up to the west coast of the US. At one stage they got caught in sea fog in a shipping lane so no sleep, overtired and ended up on an open coastal beach. Thought they had done their chips but when they jumped over the side they were in waist deep water. Got ashore and found the nearest farmer who got a machine down to them at low tide dug a hole beneath the keel, strops underneath and put it on the back of a truck. Took the boat

Anyone know much about rescueME EPIRBS. 5yr warranty and 10 yr battery life, 48hr plus operation life. Class 3 approved ( Australia and NZ). What is class 3.

Thanks for that. Problem is if i move to the other side of companionway it will be too easily knocked by the first mate in the galley. Should still get 0.5m on same side as compass.

Does an EPIRB fitted close to a bulkhead compass, maybe within 300mm, have any adverse affect on the compass reading.

I have one with the small fitting. Mitre 10 had right angle adapters that gives you the 20mm BBQ fitting. Fits straight onto the top of the bottle.

Several Raven 26 have been offshore along with the Reactor that did the last solo trans Tasman. There are several under 31ft kiwi designs that have been offshore Davidson 28, Tasman Whiting 29 Chico 30 Smith 30 Cav 32, possible 30 Lotus 9.2, 9.5 Davidson 31 H 28 Y88 have crossed the Tasman Just to name a few off the top of my head. Plenty off others if you really start to think about it.

Whitianga is definitely a lot cheaper than that. The cost of having a pontoon fitted is only about $37k which is a cheap marina and the annual charges are only about $120 so I'm told. Even the marina charges aren't to bad, it's just that the marinas are not cheap to buy.

Having spent many years on a swing mooring in the Tamaki river i must admit i much prefer a marina berth. I enjoy the ability to walk on and walk off and the ease of doing maintenance while on a marina berth. Whenever there was a big blow when on a swing mooring I always was on edge as to the condition of the moorings in the surrounding area. I had my Cav 32 come off the mooring when waiting for maintenance to be carried out on the mooring and I also had a neighboring boat hit me when he missed his mooring. So it's a marina for me, but i'm not young any more so am over climbing on and off b

The older you get the more the iron headsail gets used. That's why i repowered last year. If it's on the nose and we want to go home, we just push the button. Gone are the days of slogging all the way home with a grumpy first mate. People still by good Kiwi boats in good condition. I heard of a Chico 30 recently selling without even advertising it for sale, just word of mouth. Was in excellent condition though. There is a lot of rubbish around and the pile appears to be getting bigger.

Mine has had a bottom job, but yes definitely get it checked out. Some of the home finished ones are still good boats. Some are still expensive but with their age there is a vast difference between good and bad. When we were looking, some of the things we encountered you wouldn't want to leave the marina on. This is the same for a lot of the older Kiwi cruiser/racers. still plenty of good ones out there, just have to be careful.

Did the ride on the 9.2 ever happen and if so, how did it go

You have one that cooks pork roasts at 30 deg angle. I think i might have to do some retraining.

Unfortunately this was a problem in a lot of Kiwi production boats of that era. A lot have probably had bottom jobs by now but is a good reason to engage a reputable marine surveyor when purchasing a second hand moored vessel. Insurance companies also require a recent survey certificate before they will insure the vessel and insurance is a requirement in all marinas now. There are still a lot of good older kiwi boats around that have been well maintained or had significant upgrades done.

Have owned a 9.2 for seven years. Great boats. Very dry for a 30 footer, stick a bit downwind in light airs. Other than that they sail really well. We have owned. several yachts over the years and the 9.2 would be the best balanced by far and stands up really well and very seldom will they pound like a lot of more modern boats. Easy to sail by 2 60+ year old's.
