  1. Not sure if others are doing the squaddy around kawau race on sat but that will probably mean a few miss prizegiving? Or maybe it'll just be me....
  2. Not for first place, but xebec and I had a 2 second gap finish in the no extras division. Was a bit of a testing day on the water at times but ended up being a pleasant sail with some close racing in there... Well done to the winners! Thanks to the organisers and all those who helped make it a fun weekend
  3. Anyone know where to find the results for Sunday?
  4. Kristina will be there for both races
  5. Does it matter as long as the fridge is stocked?
  6. Just on this... "Although I'm a little sad that people are less favourable of the d28 - certainly this one seems to be very well maintained from what the current owner has told me." It does look to be a nice tidy boat, and I also cruised for years with friends who had one, and have the utmost respect for them. But, compared to the carpenter, when you view it I think you'll find that it's a little smaller in every direction inside, and will probably be a little slower on most points of sail too. They also don't have the resale of some of the others I wouldn't think. All of this is fi
  7. I wouldn't say 88s are pencils in the bow. Theyre a beamy boat through their length and a certainly not narrow like say a ross or similar at the front. In terms of them being light and flighty - from what I can find online the carpenter is ~2900kg, and class minimum race weight for an 88 is 2650 (the class min weight boats I've seen have been fairly stripped) so by the time you add the usual cruising gear like ovens etc to the weight, which the carpenter already has there's not too much between them. A lotus or something similar are a different kettle of fish and quite a lot heavier,
  8. I guess it comes down to what suits the op's requirements best. At the end of the day it's probably best to buy the tidyiest whiting/lidguard/carpenter/y88 you can find with the best gear for your money. To me they're all a step up from a d28, so while the d28 linked to in the first post looks a good boat, it would have to be cheaper than the carpenter shown for me to go down that track. As much as I'm biased towards the 88s - owning one myself, I can appreciate that the cheaper ones are let down by old engines etc compared to the carpenter in this thread. I wouldn't worry about
  9. What about a Young 88? They are to essentially to a carpenter 29 what a carpenter 29 is to a D28... Slightly faster, slightly roomier etc. There are a couple on trademe for 30ish and plenty more within the price range of the carpenter linked to at the top.
  10. I have a bath tub in auckland I'm hoping for someone to paddle to Wellington. Should be no worries as Peter blake and Paul whiting did the Tasman in their boats... Sorry. Just thought we were taking turns to say stupid sh1t again. The original responders are right, it'll cost less and be way easier to ship it.
  11. That forecast is looking very light at the moment! Here's hoping we do get some breeze...
  12. So opex went down, yet berthage is still going up?
  13. Interesting to see that as well as recently separating out the electricity charges, and stopping supplying hoses, westhaven have emailed today to say my berthage fees are rising too. All in a few months - building walkways and administering complicated gate code systems must be expensive....
  14. Thought about it a few times but by the time I'd sussed the auto helm and got up the front to put them on the wind had changed and I was hard on the wind again.
  15. Kristina will be there again too.
  16. Had a good race on High Octane - comfortable reach to Kawau, managed to sneak past some normally faster boats in the light stuff between Kawau and sail rock, parked up in a very frustrating hole just inside the chickens for quarter of an hour with Elanore and Cotton Blossom, then spent the night bashing away to reach cape brett about dawn, and managed to hold Sambucca and Zealous off to the finish. Even got the kite up for the last mile or so... Probably partly right. I can't help thinking it was also the forecast for the next day that played a part though - breeze was pretty muc
  17. Thanks KM. Communiqué certainly went like a rocket on the way home, well deserved result!
  18. Thanks all for an awesome weekend! Especially the organisers, sponsors and helpers. Are the full results online anywhere?
  19. To me it depends on purpose. A lot of the boats I come across carry a raft for 4 races a year. The coastal and the ssanz triple series. Given those races tend to be in big fleets, and are pretty closely watched by coastguard, assuming you have a grab bag with appropriate communication equipment, then a topless raft/self inflating dinghy seems a good option. Worst case is something like a container strike. Keel stays on, big hole torn in the hull. Boat goes down in a minute. Surely in that case the important thing is to get something that is easily deployable and will keep you and the cre
  20. Awesome bus Chris! Will be good to catch up for a rum or ten!
  21. Kristina - y88 Someone promised me a reach both ways and plenty of rum
  22. Decided I couldn't let the rest of h pier go racing without me, so my entry is in
  23. My feeling is, if you're trying to put a crew together from scratch, using an online advertisement on a forum that you're new to, and you ask for a contribution, unless you have something to offer that others don't, you're likely to limit yourself to new sailors and people who can't get a spot on other boats. With contributions not being that common, and with plenty of owners looking for crew, if potential crew are essentially just choosing from a list of boats with very little other information, then I suspect they'll choose the one they don't have to pay for. I race on other boats, a
  24. You can get more piers added to your tag if required. If you speak to the office they can sort that out for you.

    SSANZ 100

Report from Kristina Got away cleanly and headed off with a poled out #1 and full main. Spent the run dicing with Blondie, Farrari and a couple of the big production boats, got to the back corner of Waiheke just behind the bunch, neck and neck with La Carmargue. Breeze had built again by this stage and the gybe was a bit hairy. Just as we were about to we set a new speed record for the boat of 14.1 knots surfing down a wave. Reached in through the shifty breeze behind Waiheke to Shag rock, dropped the genoa and hoisted the jib as we did this. Managed a faster job than Farrari and
