    I don't race, and its not high on my priority list, so considering maximum weight savings is not my thing either. Jay, put simply, the less you take out of your battery bank between full charges, the longer it will last. Be it that you have 600Ah capacity and take 100aH out as a maximum, or you have 50Ah and take out 8Ah as a maximum, and you have a good charging system, you should get great life out of your batteries. If you took 300Ah out of your 600Ah bank or 25 out of a 50Ah battery, your going to get a lifespan probably well less than half that of the above scenario. Howeve
  2. Would be a great way to ruin the car trailer.... Would it sit on there nicely? If you chocked it well. But getting the trailer far enough down a slip would be impossible. What does it draw? 800mm? The trailer deck might be 400mm... Thats 1.2 meters of water and a tow vehicle well full of water.

    This thread has taken on a life of its own!. I believe that AA solar are getting a bit confused between inverters and inverter/chargers. That's all I can see would have an effect on the batteries. A pure sine vrs modified sine? That's going to be isolated from the batteries by a large bank of capacitors. The same caps which in our yacht have an inrush current in excess of 1000 amps momentarily. This is not a huge inverter either - a 1400w Xantrex Prowatt about 2 years old.   4. Looking back through my notes, we paid a minimal fee ( I didn't note the amount ) for the mmsi and I noted it was via coastguard. No annual fees noted and nothing to indicate we needed anything. I think that IT is pretty much bang on the money.
  5. The soggy paws "charts" were great for us in Fiji. We didn't find anything which you would not have expected. They are literally just google earth images georeferenced. But an overhead view is pretty good for spotting areas you wish to keep your hull and keel away from!. As I said, nothing beats having eyes up front and a good set of lungs to yell!.

  7. Navionics around Fiji are horribly inaccurate and will result in tears if your not on your guard. Get the SV soggy paws google earth photographic charts which will open in openCPN .They show reefs very clearly. No data needed. They are freely downloadable, just send them to your charts folder then update the chart locations in openCPN and you will be sweet.   8. With a data connection, yes. Without, I believe you have to jump through a few hoops and effectively use their charts through open CPN or similar. Just be aware of the quality of their charts. Would have run us onto more than a few reefs and rocks over the years. Even directly into an island.
  9. I struggle to believe that someone has not taken them to task over this after having serious damage done. If the rocks are shallower than the minimum safe depth advertised for the area they are in, that is negligence once the marina management have been made aware of this. I would imagine that the first to strike them would have made some pretty decent noise to them about this. Another side of this is: The marina charge for the use of their facilities, and these hazards exist within their facilities.What would happen if the impact with these rocks knocked someone over and they broke an a

    That 15.5v comment was somewhat my point - they appear to not know overly much what they are preaching. Or, they know more than any of the rest of us They appear to know more than what they get written on the side of their batteries also as they state 14.5 to 14.9v bulk according to the images on their website. I like AGM in principal. No spill, no maintenance, can mount in more creative ways ( could free up a lot of space with different mounting options ). I had looked at Crown but only found FLA?. Optima had been thought about. But pricing is pretty eye watering for the capacity. Also

    IT I guess we both think the same way. I feel that that minimal discharge is one of the main keys. Living attached to a decent smart charger when at the marina and using a smart regulator probably helps no doubt also. We have no real solar on board at the moment. Having to use the motor to run the fridge allows us to keep the battery bank well topped up when not connected to 240v. I am leaning toward a known brand but lower cost AGM. Probably will go with 6v batteries as the battery boxes suit this arrangement well and also its nicer lifting 35Kg batteries as opposed to 65Kg. Have people come

    Fish. The VSR and DC/DC charger should comfortably manage the start battery. It has lasted 6 odd years without any signs of difficulty. Being sealed its hard to measure accurately, but its not been an issue so far. Keen on AGM for several reasons - not in the least that there is no acid to get all over the place, no topping up, a true maintenance free option. Also AGM appear to be a better option for a deep cycle. IT, I will look into that battery option. 15 years - whats your secret? How are you calculating the remaining capacity? Is it an overall voltage drop with a known Ah load on

    P.S. Not interested in changing all systems to allow LiPOFe or LiIon. Thats a bit pricey. Weight is not a significant issue on a 12T crusing yacht.

    So. Time for a new house bank. The old Deka golf cart batteries did not like the summer temperatures in Fiji, but they were 2005 batteries and prior to our ownership had been down to 9 volts ( were at that when we purchased it assuming we would need to replace the batteries immediately) so they did pretty well I guess!. 400ah give or take - got room for batteries up to around 310mm long and around 180 wide. Height is not overly limiting. I could space the battery covers up if needed. Currently configured as 2 paralleled series pairs of 6V batteries. According to the BEP battery monit
  16. With prior arrangement made with someone who has been provided with the SDS's you should be able to have a letter which will allow passage with said tins. You would have to arrange this with the airline. Generally if they have clear information they are happy to assist. If not, you will at least not get to the airport and find they are not in your luggage at the far end, or get called up at the gate for a discussion surrounding them.

  18. Assuming your not doing runs of more than, say, 5 meters, cheap stuff that is at least 2.5mm2 for the main speakers and probably 4mm2 for the subwoofer. You don't want any voltage drop as that is wasted power. You could go to 4mm2 for the main speakers if your getting longer runs and 6mm2 for the subwoofer. trinned cable would be a good choice of course....
  19. I most certainly hope that you use cable elevators made of unobtainium when using such cheap cables. Otherwise the hand placed cotton snake oil impregnated dielectric will compress on one side and you will totally loose your entire 3d sound stage. Also, I will be most disappointed if your not using cryogenicaly treated interconnect and speaker leads which are specifically burnt in for the latitude you reside at, and that you have observed the magnetic anomalies in your residence when choosing the appropriate routing of the cables. Its absolutely horrible thinking of the person overboard, and the people remaining on board having not been able to rescue him must be absolutely devastated to understate it significantly.   22. KM. Just be aware that some companies measure sensitivity at 2.83 volts - which is 1w at 8 ohm. With a 4 ohm driver thats 2 watts or 3dB better than your getting. Its just a way of making the numbers look bigger.
  23. I understand impedance Wheels - I was still thinking that KM would look into marine or car audio gear so impedance would not be a major factor. Not all home audio gear is 8 ohm either - lots now is rated at 6 ohm, and lots still at 4 ohm, but thats often when the manufacturers have added an additional bass driver and not gone for 16 ohm VC's so they just parallel up a pair of 8's and adjust the L pad on the crossover. But if KM wants some serious bass without overly much power demand, maybe looking at a JBL 2226 in a 4th order bandpass box might give him a bit of the jollies Done right th
  24. KM, almost more important than Class D amplification is to get efficient speakers. Go find the most efficient speakers you can run to. Speakers rated at 84dB/w require 4 times the power to get the same volume as speakers rated at 90dB. And if you can get some 95dB plus speakers, a 2 or 3 watt amplifier will give you serious volume. PA speakers are often in the 99dB to 105dB range, hence such impressive volumes. 95dB is quite loud for music. I am not too sure what is available in the car audio/marine audio world, but definitely check around.
