Looks like a Lot of new boats have made the starting line up for the SSANZ Northern Triangle Race.

Shimmer has cat 3 inspection next week amazing how many little things I needed to do to comply. Starting to get excited about racing!

Wait list is almost emptied out, so it’s been re opened, lost a few boats due to Covid restrictions stopping some from getting into country or getting boats ready or just regulations. Plus lost a couple because of work or life commitments

I don’t think this event will be fully subscribed come start day so if your keen get in touch

  2. It’s not possibly full of salt/marine growth ?

If it’s just plastic of a type bushes top and bottom it may just need a good clean and grease (of the correct type) I’ve seen this in boats that have sat for a while

Sometimes there’s a grease nipple between the two bushes which would be hard to get to on a 830

  3. SSANZ Evolution Northern Triangle will be a fully vaccinated event under these rules

We will also need to amend requirements to split briefings and prize givings to stay under the 100 as this stands

On the good side is with the traffic light system regions will be open and we will just have to abide by the level at the stops

Excuse me.  Do you have any information about when these restrictions will be lifted?

No, if I said otherwise I’d only be speculating, the rules seem to be being made up as they go along

    (SORRY THREAD DRIFT)

Speaking of rum, my new favorite is black spot rum from Jamaica. Can be brought locally for a similar price to Mt Gay eclipse and rivals even the $250 bottles I have in my extensive rum collection.

    Seriously worth a try.

My 2 cases for the summer cruise turned up last week....

  7. Looks like too much topmost backstay

probably only need to use this with masthead gear on

Also you may need to reef a lot earlier than you think with that squaretop main, bring it down to height of forestay at as low as 12-15 knots (it is a Ross boat after all, they go best standing up)

Also if you’ve only just bought it don’t trust that the rig and sail are setup for each other

I'm 20m and designed 12 tones, probably sailing around at 14tonnes, and lots of windage.

I’d go #6 and 12mm chain but as above ask the bondage man as everyone above says you will be blown away by how hard they dig in, I’ve pulled ours up and had two or three metres plus of chain clogged with mud because the anchor has just kept going deeper, also the shape doesn’t allow it to fall any way but point down, theses rollbar anchors look to me to be an afterthought to fix a design fault

It was weight vs length. They don't have options that even come close. My boat needs to be half as long or twice as heavy to get on their chart.

I have a excel #5 it says it’s for 12-15m boats, Ma’ara is 15.23m and close to 20 tonnes fully loaded, so should have a #6 but when I tried it the point of the anchor hit the bow stem

Grant was great to deal with said here take a #6 and see if it will fit, if not come back and try the #5, he also said that because they work so well you will be fine with a slightly undersized one. Boat had a very large plough before and we managed to drag that in all sorts of exotic locations around the world.

‘The Excel has dragged a couple of times but always in very windy conditions in shallow water (on station doing race management) but as they say “chain does nothing for you in the locker”

On station at Port Abercrombie in a Chains Ropes and Anchors Enduro race we were anchored in 25m of water getting hit by upto 70kt bullets, we had 120m of 10mm chain out and were rock solid

So short answers is ‘talk to Grant, go with his suggestions and if in doubt put more chain out’

    Hi all,

Thanks for the responses. it was definitely the colour that put me off thinking it was teak/mahogany etc. I think it does look like oak too - I might try and match that way or perhaps go with a mounting plate has other have said.

Another way is make a timber surround out of a dark wood so it looks different and not like a poor match ???

  11. Paul, I’d say more importantly the hull shape and balance of the boat are way more important than is it MH or Frac.

tweaky boats that have to be driven over every wave may be fun for a while but get very tiring to sail offshore

Whereas a balanced boat with a nice motion will take you much further, I’m a big fan of Beale boats for this reason as they are really well balanced or the 33 and 11.6 that I’ve sailed were. Both of these I’ve sailed for hours without touching the helm, why, just because I could. Both would come up slightly when pressed and drop off in the lulls. This makes for a boat that’s easily driven with low loads on the auto pilot, rig, sails and crew. Owned the 11.6 and did over 8000nm racing and cruising NZ waters, probably never would have bought it if we hadn’t sailed the 33 ( both just happen to be fractional rigs )
