Swell looked a lot different tonight on news than it did in the doco that was screened earlier
A lot more like I’d have expected as we were sheltering not far away
-
Entry tonight is for SSANZ members only
However, with the discount it’s a better deal to join then enter anyway
-
Entries open tonight at 1900hrs
Last time it sold out in minutes, you will be able to buy a ticket from 7pm tonight which will allow you to complete your entry form later on the race portal.
The link will only become live at this time, so you may need to refresh your browserYou will need, a credit card, your name, email address, ph number, boat name and design.
The ticket isn’t transferable however you will be able to swap out co-skipper or boat if you upgrade either
https://www.ssanz.co.nz/nt.2025/Entries are limited to 40 yachts, after this you will be able to join the wait list. Yachts on the wait list will be offered a spot if we have yachts withdraw, no one has ever missed out before but to make sure you get a ticket tonight to avoid the stress of not knowing

Is it a high tide only affair? Isn't there a low bridge?
Min of 5m from memory, maybe more. No bridge, it’s the first place you come. Lots of large workboats and the cement ships turn off just prior

Not a hundred percent but believe that they are possibly shorting marks
trackers can ping a time as they cross them and race management could call the race at any one of these points
Just my guess but I’ve been involved with theses tracker a lot

Not exactly rough, typical to good offshore conditions
alloy work hardens and will show very few external signs before breaking
As a safety inspector there’s not a lot we can do other than ask the owner to check with the manufacturer or get an engineer to sign off on it/get it x rayed , they can look fine but I’d never use that as a rudder stock. But all materials have their weaknesses, stainless at least tends to crack on the surface long before it weakens in the centre, carbon will make lots of noise usually long before it lets go
Biggest job of an inspector is to ask if you’ve checked / considered all the weaknesses, at the end of the day it’s only a visual inspection and I won’t be sitting in the raft with you. Still it’s surprising how we always find a few issues, can’t think of any boat that’s got 100/100, 90 is pretty normal

Most of the production boats don't have watertight bulkhead. Some have dams - didn't work great for the titanic!
Also, an 85mm alloy rudder shaft wouldn't meet cat 1 here in NZ.
Just register offshore and away you go
-
Always go larger than you think you need
You will find other uses once you have it
mounting in battery box is a good idea, however you need to fit a 10 amp breaker on the 230v side as close as possible to inverter

I sailed north
Hauled out at Whangārei Marine Centre was half the price of Westhaven

If you want to drive north of the Brynderwyns then Rob Harrop at RH Engineering on Port Rd in Whangarei has made me all sorts of custom pieces out of custom materials and at a good price.
I’ll second Rob, he recently made a small nylon/plastic roller for my bow thruster and had to machine a stainless two piece bolt to fit it.
great workmanship and all done in no time at bugger all cost

As an inspector I’d suggest you get a boatbuilder to do a little exploration, remove some of the glass and see if the corrosion is surface or crevice ?
This will dictate your next action, document / photo this process as this will help with insurance and certification etc going forward. Plus an insurance company and safety inspector will accept a qualified boatbuilders recommendation
‘If they need to come out and be rebuilt your still then able to do either all or some of this work but follow the professional advice

Spoke to Steve yesterday, he said in his previous yacht he would have been trying to avoid the squalls to prevent roundups
However in the Pogo he was looking for them as it just powered up and accelerated forward, the little Elliott was on a different league and apparently they didn’t have the water ballast working. Lots of much bigger boats behind them

I heard liquid luck weighs less than a 6 pack of Heineken.
anyone got some specs on that build? Length, beam, dips etc?
Pipi, single handed, came in a touch after liquid luck. Second mono over the line. Great effort for single handed!
Got asked to go two up with Steve but couldn’t make it
looks like a top effort for a euro trash production boat

Absolutely right BK, fine for a Lake boat but for NZ coastal cruising and further afield not so much.
Hybrid as in the new HH44 I think is looking promising, but they can still only motor at 5kts ish

Rapido 40 #07 has arrived in New Zealand!!
It's all electric with Oceanvolt and is the first Rapido 40 to have a helm wheel.
This is the second Rapido to be based in New Zealand. Rapido 60 #02, Romanza, is in Auckland.
