Ask the Revs crew from the RNZ and Truxton decided to ditch their Sq top for a pin head and won.Square tops with a full and fresh crew, reefing offshore can be tricky but with two tired crew that's when bat cars and sails start getting damaged and then jammed The cross over seems to be out 30' under this and you can get away with a sq top but over that and its all about systems and that's what BooBoo and Damon have been optimising. Shorthanded sailing is about keeping the boat at 90%+ of it optimum 100% of the time

He's already gone bigger main, not square just more roach Square tend to be a problem shorthanded Now let's watch them test the new prod to death in the coastal, if they finish it will be good to go for the RNI I'm picking

Most likely Steve But don't stay in too long or you will fall into the wind shadow between Whangamumu and the Cape "Shot the gap" or 'round the out side like a buffalo girl' ????? That's the real question, I've always gone through and said next time I'm going around ???? "The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing but expect a different result"

What you really need to know is what's happening with the warm current that runs down the east coast. It's often close to cape Brett then runs outside the Hen & Chicks then outside the Mokes then kicks south at the needles The catch is sometimes it runs inside the H&Cs and therefore speeds up so that makes going outside beneficial, but rarely it runs the other way ie south to north. It's usually not that fast at this time of year but speeds up as the warm currents come out of the pacific The other major area of concern is tidal flow at bream head Other than that sail north and tu

Glass verses wood Wood, easy to fix Easy to see damage Needs fixing asap, if left will get worse Painted so will need reprinting at some point Glass More robust Only needs a cut and polish every few years Damage can be hard to find and fix depending on where it is Once you paint a gelcoat boat it will be no better than a wooden boat in that respect Hard to beat a well built and maintained wooden boat Lots of people under maintain glass boats as they generally get away with it but you can't do that with wood so you will soon know when you go and look, if it a 20+ yr old woode

Joker There's a 6.7 that's too small for a family of 4 but they sail really well. And a 8.2 that would be ideal as they are water ballasted so light to tow but twice your budget is what's being asked and more Don't be afraid to offer 25% less than asking price, most TY are hard to sell and getting quite old You should settle between 10 to 15% under asking price or your wife will fall in love with one and you will just buy it.

Trojans are similar if not slightly slower than a Noelex 25 but with a higher SRI (self righting index) Very family friendly as far as TY go If you want performance then get a Ross 780 Here's something to use as a base for comparison http://www.nztya.nz/uploads/113077/files/Rating_Current_from_August_2016_-_Listed_by_Rating.pdf

Do you think you get all or enough of the old oil out going down the dipstick tube, I really like taking the bung out of the sump and leaving it whilst I change the filter, sometimes I'll also pour a cup of clean oil through just to make me feel better. I can do this with my genset as it has a hose off the sump, but there isn't enough depth in the bilge under the main engine to do this, so seriously thinking of getting a hose made up to attach to sump bung then attach the other end to a small plunger pump Probably just being anal but it always makes you feel good after a good oil change an

Thanks Winter, will do the same when I'm ready most likely

Where did you end up getting your pump Winter ? Something I've got on the to-do list and I'm sick of the stupid little hand pumps that the hose comes off and drip oil Last three oil changes were as follows Fiji Panama Spain

We have a C02 extinguisher with a head activated head on it in the engine bay as opening the door to extinguish a fire is going to fuel the fire Like this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR1rx4Hd2MUltvVMJVrh9iZfYr48jtRhc55ujKUz2n4sLyANO4_I3RmMbxK0g

It's amusing how BPs attitude to NZ registration has changed seeing he will be legally residing in NZ in a NZ registered vessel offshore $1000 doesn't seem too higher price compared to losing your pension ? Not having a go at BP here but just interesting how people's perception can vary greatly depending on where we are standing at the time Don't get me wrong $800 that I paid two years ago or over a K now is daylight robbery but if I needed NZ support in what ever form whilst sailing around the Pacific/world then it's cheap support / insurance and I've never been anywhere that NZ regi

Yes it was the male that was the wrong person It's often the case that "assumption is the mother of all fuckups"
-
Yes I know of a major brokerage who missed a very large sale by only talking to the wrong person recently. It happens all the time And just remember flash cars and suits often equal DEBT

I think what the doomsayers are missing is the only ones hurting are the ones exiting boat ownership It's all about the difference between selling and buying, If your in boating for investment then your dreaming mate We listed our boat for less than I thought it was worth and definatly less than it owed us but it sold in 4 days ( probably lucky ) but we can buy a lot cheaper also in this market IMHO there are people out there that aren't meeting the market, some because they don't really wish to sell and others because their dreaming, but there are always options in any market.

It's a generational thing Tim, our gen can't resist a bargain even if they cost twice what they are worth ! But the coming gen's what it new and now, so what your saying will happen it will just take a couple of natural disasters and time But I can see a opening for a boat dismatler to setup and buy for a $1 on trademe to scrap them I get very surprised every time I walk around marinas at some of the boats that have weed longer than the rigging and can't believe that someone is paying the fees. Wtf

Craig there is no way you will own it in 15 years, I'll put money on it. The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour

Here you go Royale, a real kiwi boat but not at 250k like the one for sale here. Also no gst or duty http://au.yachtworld.com/boats/1979/Lid ... 9Xyk2IaySM Thanks Darkside, I thought I was decided before you posted that !

We looked at US boats initially but discounted them for two reasons being, 110v the other being the same boat in the US is about 20% more expensive. Also we don't get to sail across the Atlantic, so that makes three disadvantages As for the electrics of the Euro boats well I'm taking the Electrician on both the purchase trip and the real one. Yes we are only interested in owner versions that haven't been charted. And are looking at above average production / semi production models. Staying away from the average bear hopefully.

Darkside Thinking low but what will that be ? We have a line of them, first one on the hit list is in Spain then 3 days later we will be in Nice, I don't think they will know what's hit them. I'd hate to offer 60% of asking price and them say yes, but I guess if it's a bargin to us them everyone's happy And yes looking at non charter owners versions Not planning on much time in the Med but maybe next time ?

Interesting thread We have been looking for a 50' cruiser for the last year and everything we have seen here is either at least 3/4 of a mi or a POS. So we leave in six weeks to by in the Med It's looking likely that for less than $300k nz we will buy a yacht less than 5 years old and fitted out to a level not seen here. The biggest question on my mind is how low with my initial offer do I go ? 50, 70, 80 % of asking price ?? We will sail home, which is also a bonus Planning on taking a year in total on and off but if it takes two years then I won't be crying.

If it's the one I think your talking about I hope they are looking after it.
