  1. Took the dodgy seagull boat out for her maiden burn. Mental note: Take more duct tape next time.
  2. Was aiming for somewhere around 4:30 - 5pm depending on how people are placed. Bring Magnus, then we can stand around drinking rums while he flips her over by himself! Boat is in my back yard, Te Atatu Peninsula, West side.
  3. From what I've seen on other boats, the rules must be pretty loose on interior structure. The rules used to be pretty tight 15 or so years ago, but they've been relaxed somewhere along the line. Not sure if it's a good thing or not! I guess if some boats can have open transoms, long cabins and ugly windows then a few frames on an otherwise 'to plan' looking Piedy shouldn't be too wide of the mark
  4. Back onto the inside for some additional stiffening in preparation for turning her over this Friday. Time to rip the bottom off her now. Anyone with a good back and a taste for free rum and cokes should attend.
  5. Once I've got the deck, cabin and cockpit glassed I'll turn her over and re-skin the hull. 75% of the ply below waterline is shot so better to turn her over for that. She has some pretty funky shapes under there also that I'd like to change.
  6. Spent a few hours today long boarding the gunnels on Ratz and tidying up coves and radius's ready to skin the deck in glass. Scraping back the topside paint for the gunnel taping and found another soft spot. Usual case of 2 forward, 1 back on the rat. Surely this will be the end of the rot discoveries.... There's hardly any old boat left!
  7. In other proper Piedy news, I'm almost done with the new cockpit on the Rat.
  8. Wow, and I thought I had some boat building to do!
  9. Temperature is quite critical with that stuff. If it's the textured roller type anyway. If it's too cold it slumps before it skins off and won't hold shape. Works best in the summer. Prep with 240 usually works for me. I looked at using it but opted for the single pot international product 'Interdeck' Very happy with the results and it's 1/4 of the weight of the kiwigrip. Could be worth a look.
  10. Nah, the piedy is just a sideline. I don't expect the young to sell in a hurry so plenty of time to hatch a plan. Maybe a GP26, or a 69' split screen Kombi. Maybe a bad ass seagull boat even. Those guys have some fun.
  11. Pushing on with ol' Ratz. Cleaned out all the rubbish from up front and put a new stbd bow section in. Deck dry-fitted and good to go also.
  12. I built a tent over the piedy and demolished the foredeck.
  13. Went to the demo yard and bought a few planks of kauri for the Piedy. Finished insulating under the house, then went horse riding on a very friendly horse called 'Quest'. While Quest was very friendly and nice to look at, it was about as close as you can get to riding a sofa. Couldn't run to save itself. Didn't think much of turning corners or going down hill. In retrospect, he/she would rate really well under IOR.
  14. Ran our full scale technical rehearsal for filming a doco on next years 30th Annual Waikato Seagul race. Having had a taste of what goes on with these guys the past few days, this has got to be the pick of on water events over Easter weekend. Insanely good fun! Our camera boat could do 25 knots and we couldn't keep up with the fastest 5hp seagul boat!!! They had 28 boats on the start line this year. Awesome.....
  15. I tell you, It’s a real laugh to experience how differently people deal with you when you rock up in a dirty old Piedy. With the nice shiny WT it’s usually: “Wow nice boat, look at all the carbon etc” With the piedy it was: “you can’t park there, we don’t care if you’ve booked a pile, $5 to launch your dinghy, another $5 to launch the kayak. The commodore is watching you, don’t push your luck!” ha ha!
  16. Ratz is piedy #3, 1967 I think. So she would qualify as far as I can tell. There's been debate as to the piedy's classic status. She'll definitely meet the required rot percentage to be a classic. She has that authentic 'classic' smell also.
  17. I can’t believe you guys are having a laugh at the expense of my fine classic sailing yacht. But if you must know, she's been converted to a schooner rigged kite ship.
  18. Put my awesome Piedy back in the water! Now the mighty Ratz is up the Te Atatu creek. She seems to have some structural issues and is currently sinking at the rate of 2L per hour!
  19. Got Wild Thing back from the BOI. 16 hour trip all up. Got a surprise just around Brett when the bunk hatches appeared to be floating downstairs! On closer inspection it turns out we had a leak in the outboard well and we were taking on a lot of water. A top came off a fuel can and we added a bit of fuel to the 200L of water sloshing around. Bailed that out over a few hours and did some spewing. and haven't felt right since! Looking forward to the Route 66! Thanks to Luke & Stephen for your help on the trip back.
  20. Thankfully these guys looked like your regular old ants. Just a huge quantity of them with piles of eggs etc.
  21. Went down to Ratz today, took the covers off, lifted a bunk board and disturbed the largest ants nest I've ever seen. Had to abandon ship! Not sure what they're eating..... Unless they're a special breed of ants that can live on rot. If that's the case then life is probably pretty good for them!
  22. I hate to say it, But I was on DM with Paul that weekend!
