Battleship got a reaction from ex Elly in Akarana 350
I don't think that is the case at all. The race took longer than anyone expected, originally there was to be a BBQ on the Saturday evening. Everyone was asked at the briefing if a Sunday Prizegiving was ok and all agreed. Was just a some unusual weather.

With a martin breaker you can pull it all in from the cockpit and straight down the hatch, just saying. I can manage our 120 sqm Gennaker no problem. Furlers are great for zeros but I haven't seen a furling setup for a gennaker that I would be happy with in a breeze. But of course whatever works for you.

So being a member of a yacht club makes you and elite sailor?

If a crew member won’t pay $65 a year for a club membership find another sport! Not a big expense in the grand scheme of thing. I don’t see why people find it such a issue

So for the A350, 350nm at this time of the year. Not really a race for beginners. Sure you have to start somewhere but this race is most likely not going to be your first taste of sailing....
Anyone contemplating crewing in the race has already invested hundreds or more likely thousands on wet weather gear, life jacket/harness, sea boots ect. If its a boat that takes a complete beginner on a race like this then its very likely that the race/food costs are going to be split so there is more money. Then there is (at least) a day off work and the whole weekend for the race, plus a few evenings or weekends before hand helping with boat prep- Its a big commitment, not just turn up and go sailing.
I just dont see $65 for joining a club being a big issue for a major race.

Once again another lot of moaning people.

Instead of moaning why not get out of your chair join a yacht club get involved and help grow the sport that you are complaining is declining.

Yacht clubs struggle for numbers and volunteers yet you won't join but want to rely on them running events for you but you don't want to support them.

For a crew to join a club is alot cheaper than been an owner paying to run, berth, entry fees.

I like the criteria. Join a club. Support those that run the events.

I see your point, but there are cheap options and if it is a  big multi day race, you aren't going with someone who hasn't sailed before.

    Enough bludging, join a club.

Battleship reacted to Fish in PHRF
Just a note on using racetrack. Prior to the Coastal, SNS had done 6 races. The average racetrack rating of those 6 races was 0.786 - that is higher than the PHRF rating applied for the Coastal of 0.768 (Passage).

SNS's racetrack rating is now 0.736 (after 9 races), clearly heavily affected by a 0.606 for the Coastal. So for a new boat with no racing history, the racetrack rating can jump around like a crazy woman - it isn't reliable for using to handicap events with.

I was a little surprised SNS was put into Div 3 for the Coastal, and on seeing the complaint about PHRF here sussed the rating. Based on the rig being ex Ross 930, compared the rating to those of Ross 930's. There is some variance on the base ratings, I'm assuming for those with turbo'd keels, bowsprits and extra fruity sails (FRO's and the like).

SNS has a slightly longer LWL, and a slightly lighter displacement than a Ross 930, but is very similar in a lot of other aspects, especially rig and sail dimensions. SNS's base handicap is within the range of the Ross 930's, and is basically the same as those with a new keel (i.e. similar keel to SNS). I can't see a major disparity on the base rating when compared to similar boats.

What I did notice is SNS's LP is fairly short at 3.6 m (compared to a J of 3.3 m). Given the Coastal was an upwind affair with a light breeze dieing off, having a small headsail and no Zero is going to be really punishing. I'd think if the Coastal was a classic downwind 20 knts, the result and this thread would be entirely different.

I've always thought it takes a while to tune in a new boat and really get it to boogie (possibly even a whole season, depending on how sharp the crew is). Not even pro boats would expect a blinder in their first major event for a new boat. Likewise, it takes time / races to get a consistent picture of a boats rating, as shown by the racetrack number being higher than the PHRF ahead of the Coastal. I can't see a major issue with PHRF here, and given suitable conditions SNS will be able to smoke that, and others may be criticising PHRF for being too soft here.

The handicappers jobs is thank-less, so I just wanted to put in my 2 cents and thank the handicappers, both at YNZ and all the local club handicappers around the country, for running the numbers and putting up with the criticism when someone isn't happy with their number. I get the vague impression handicappers aren't inundated with people saying the handicapper is great, their rating is way too low.....

We had a great weekend at the Mercs on Labour Weekend as part of the Legends Regatta. Lovely evenings with no wind and nice sea breezes during the day for the races. Here is a picture one of my crew took at the entrance of the Cove

I'd definitely go for the easterly over an H28. They are a better sail boat, both are pretty slow by today's standards but capable sea boats.
They are getting old now so make sure you get a good marine surveyor and listen to what he says carefully.

Battleship reacted to Island Time in Do cat one inspections do any good?
Perhaps. But you don’t know how many boats leaving NZ were on their 1st ocean voyage, or how many were improved by either the cat 1 requirements, or the experience of the inspector before they left. For many, and ocean voyage is not what the expect, cat 1 or not.
Personally I’d like to see the cat 1 system as advisory rather than compulsory.

I wouldn't get too excited Mr Native, there is 6.5 billion the Government has borrowed through the NZTA and Housing NZ that is not on the government books. More lies and deceit. They borrowed the money and diverted the previously allocated funds elsewhere.

So the Gas companies have 33.9c per litre to pay staff and cover all their costs, but yeah it's their fault gas is so expensive.

Passing of a legend. Christmas ‘80 I sailed my trailer yacht from Russell to Doves bay and climbed the hillside to his studio high on the cliff. Spend a lovely considerable time with him and left with a set of plans for a Stratus 747 which I built.

Was a couple of weekends ago but was epic.
Left Tauranga on Friday morning, got to Issy bay at 10pm for a sleep.
Got up the next morning did the last SSANZ race. Got the Gun for our division. Rafted up in Issy bay for some rums with a friend who brought us over Fish and Chips from Waiheke.
Got up the next morning and sailed back to Tauranga. Had an awesome run home 12.5 hours from Issy Bay to A beacon. Five hours from the Mercs to A beacon mostly two sailing but got the A3 up once the wind dropped to 20 knots. Had a couple of lay downs but mostly good.

Got some footage two sailing in a 35 knot north westerly under reefed main and no.4 hitting over 20 knots at times.

perhaps the club should take note of the Antifa way of doing things.  Threaten all sorts of things and thus cause the council to just shut down the neighbours right to speak out.
