  1. Agreed chris steel has had a lot of bad press mainly by people who dont own one,i find it easy to maintain lots of warning before any problems and no deck leaks. How many fibreglass and wooden boats can say that.
  2. I took my 32 footer round the south island via stewart island this year had no issues, only difference between smaller boats and bigger ones are speed and storage space, smaller boats are way easier to handle, reef anchor etc.
  3. Ive got a swing mooring in nelson and its rental almost covers my pile mooring in tne harbour and when it becomes vacant ill move out there.I have seen a lot of boats damaged in the marina here one boat has been hit seven times in the last 10 years.6 times by so called qualified skippers,to be fair he is parked in the row adjacent to the travellift. So ill feel happier out in the harbour.
  4. Yup the euro boats are put together like warehouse chilly bins,
  5. Fish i think there are a lot less sailors coming through the ranks now,and all the old sailors are dropping off leaving a glut of boats on the market. On the bright side boats are much more affordable now
  6. Stewart island and Fiordland would be easy to spent months down there just have a heater
  7. Yes wheels spot on with over anoding there was a steel boat here years ago that did that and the bottom paint kept falling off.my anodes on the back of the prop so wont rattle loose like shaft ones i can let it work a bit longer
  8. I replace mine when there about 80 percent gone, have often wondered if you can recast all the old ones.
  9. I think you would need a drain hole on top of your sealant or else salt would play merry hell with your mast my genoa pole is on the front of my mast and last time i used it it the end fitting broke off it was full of salt and corrosion from not being able to drain
  10. Being reliant on an engine is also bad seamanship those little buggers only need an injector to crack or a bit of dirt in your fuel and they wont go,if you have a sail ready to raise at all time and an anchor ready to go you may save your ship.i see people motoring into there berths with sail ccvers on and no anchor ready usually racers and i shudder.
  11. What ever happened to having a sense of adventure swirly world did it and it wasnt a fast or efficient sailing boat.Experience is the answer though and shane hasnt got enough yet.
  12. I would just for fun need a generator to keep nav lights going though
  13. In the good old days it was seen as a challenge to get in and out of your berth under sail my old man was old school and did it a bit more fun than hand cranking an old single pot lister

    Lotus 9.2

Met one from nelson down stewart island this year did the whole south island trip mostly solo so are capable enough boats nice big cockpits sailed with one in the early eightys up east coast of oz it crossed the tasman no worrys.theysail well if i remember right.
  15. My boat has a centre cockpit and my toilet inlet and my electric bilge pump feed out of and into tnem to get cat 1 i would need to poke 2 more holes in my boat as cockpit ddrains need to be exclusive ,wheres the sense in that.It amuses me that any old shitheap can sail coastal wwhich imho is rougher and tougher that most stuff you ever see offshore
  16. Friend of mine registered his boat in amsterdam he needed a european postal address and i think about 500 euro.
  17. The nelson city council owns tne travel lift here and have doubled the price of a haul and tripled the price of the hard stand in tne last two years.surely if they were worryed about marine pests the travel lift should be made available for free so we could all have clean hulls, surely this is the cheapest and most sensable option if they were serious about controlling the issue.
  18. Have the same sh*t in nelson once a complaint is made no matter how stupid council are obliged to react.am building a small townhouse at the moment in town and have had 3 complaints about noise from ladys who sit at home all day with nothing to do ,was compacting on fri and got told off for shaking a neighbours house and it upset her dog.so we have copyed a 3 story plan out and next time we are going to show them that the sh*t will fly then.
  19. Tried to get to fiordland down west coast in feb predictwind was so wrong it was ridiculous dangerous in fact standard metservice marine was a lot more accurate rest of the boats heading down said the same thing.i got sick of waiting so went down east coast predictwing was a joke there as well
  20. For tide direction and strength i use navionics charts they are very good for weather metservice is usually not too bad.i have got predictwind but have found it worse than useless.
  21. I thought dismasting was standard for antartica david lewis and gerry clark had trouble keeping theirs up
