  1. Bona-fide cruisers should be allowed to come in for cyclone season from the pacific and sea time is quarantine. These are their homes we're talking about, tell them to just throw them away? I don't think so. Plus our economy needs the money.
  2. Something big that require revs / centrifugal force is the prop, and one blade sticking will obviously cause balance issues. I actually wondered if you had a bucket wrapped on the prop. If it was a shaft, something caught on it. But you're saildrive. I know you're in selected neutral but I wonder if your Morse control or cables needs adjustment and the gearbox is actually engaged or part anyway. So I would start at looking at the prop when it's doing it, disconnect the cables and check the gear select position and after that if that says nothing, start thinking about gearbox to damper pl
  3. We always stop at the Cavalli islands, several anchorage spots depending on wind direction, you can always hop into mahinepua if it's too west or windy. Flax seeds marking our usual spots. The Eastern side is nice if there's been a SW for a few days and the swell is down. Whangaroa harbour is a jewel and a destination suitable for all weather, you just anchor where it's pretty in one of four arms. The must not miss is the walk from Lane cove up to the dukes nose. About 30 minutes and involves a climb up a well set up rock face with handrail. Quite luxurious now, it used to be a chain
  4. Any excuse. Must be in close to be shallow like that.
  5. I had a fergy in Opito bay for 6 months, the hitting of topsides might have become an issue on tide change etc but I still think I would go for it again and trouble shoot it if there was a problem, give it a lifejacket/buffer if required. Ours was a really highly rated mooring with 2 heavy top ropes but it didn't seem to have a swivel, so occasionally wed have to unwind it. Easy to pick up.

Friends used to own Pericon, they took her to the islands twice iirc. Maybe as late as 15. She's in the same beautiful condition, lives at Windsor landing in kerikeri. I'd ring a cat 1 inspector for their opinion on stability, I doubt it's a concern. There's a pretty one permanently in Savusavu owned by a Kiwi . He goes up each year but I gather she doesn't move much. I commented to him that she looked different, he told me she was built to plan but the glass hulls were slightly different in the bow sections for mold release. True? Dunno, but that would mean Pericon was built that
  7. Seem to be forthright and full disclosure ads for the caravan and the hartley there.
  8. Paddle wheel effect. Understand that, understand how to use prop walk.
  9. We used ours again in 19 in a trip to Fiji. Bought new simcard,Did the firmware update. Nothing about the process is intuitive but support is good and they're patient enough to work you through it.

Congratulations and thanks for the photos. Further to Windsor landing and coincidental to our visit, and to pass on the latest news..... I read just last night of a Rahui placed on any development of the ramp area past what is there now because of the fish traps and proposed dredging, and the impact that will have on the inlet. So that's actually big news and probably will kill the council plans there. That's good news for the locals I think, but it will mean more effort and weight behind the rather over the top plans for the Rangitane side involving reclamation of a rather astonishing sca

The Doc is probably out sailing on that machine of his. Bumped because we did another dinghy trip over to Windsor landing on saturday,Docs area. We met a lovely local woman, Betty, and chatted on her ramp about the goings on. Latest in the news is that fish traps around the northern edge might have cultural significance, preventing the council developing road access to the landing they own. It's kind of funny, like an episode of dad's army from the 70s. Have ramp, have queens chain, ohhh...forgot to get a driveway across private land so we can get to it. Now we've been here a little w

The shoals of a hundred or thousand at a time up around Fiji is always a buzz. Not many kahawai around either, we finally hooked a couple inside the ninepin but that's all we saw in a couple of weeks. The day before is when Lanakai caught the 425 kilo black marlin there, on a dead kahawai , so I'm told. Say what, you mean 425 lb doncha? Nooo. ..425 kg.
  13. Bugatti and Skoda is a bit tough....E type and Ford Escort maybe.????????

    Refrigeration

Fridge tech kit retrofitted to the original freezer compartment in 2015 plus a couple of solar panels, I left it on until 2018 when I turned it off for a few months. It just did 4 months in Fiji at minus 17 or so, we brought a couple of sausage packs back. It's on now turned down to fridge temp so there's a cold beer ready when we get back to the BOI.
  15. I like Mates system. What I did is add a cam cleat to the mast, not a big deal. You put it just off the fair lead of the halyard. Make a fairing block out of umpy or wood, or cast in situ with epoxy. How big is the main we're talking about?
  16. It's interesting that Westhaven and by extension, Auckland City, doesn't care about a theif active on the property they manage. Failure to maintain law is the cause of vigilante action.
  17. Ah well, we must keep those thieves identities private, less they get upset.
  18. Can't comment on what people have done but here's a little historical titbit. I spoke to Dave Blundell once and he told me the design brief to LD was for a wholesome gulf cruiser designed without regard to rule, and to look like a small Riada. I've seen that in print somewhere too.
  19. The Clark 42s are magnificent sea boats and were high standard builds. You load them up with your 6 months of cruising stores and they don't go slower. Lazy 150 through 180 mile days. The last time I saw Quintessence she'd had a whole lot spent on paint and was in spectacular condition. See, if you want to go cruising, and you'd like to do that safely and make prompt passages in a boat you can trust to stay together when it hits the fan, that's the boat to be in.
  20. Ours will be 45 next year. Smashed our way out of Fiji a month ago, doesn't creak or groan, all the cupboard doors open, scantlings that make some of the modern brands look like ice cream containers. A fast cruiser in 1975 and still quick enough . 6.5 days navula pass to the ninepin. These old boats are built to another level and by world class boat builders, they're worth the effort.
  21. I see that it is Stuart Pedersen's funeral today. My thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends . And thankyou Matt, for keeping this thread open for what has been a thoughtfull and respectfull discussion.
  22. I do. Altex sell an underwater epoxy in tins. And I split a half sheet of bendy ply into panels that fit some storage spots, backed it with 6mm closed cell foam , have makita and jar full of 8x 1 1/4 screws. Like putting on covers and a raincoat prevents rain, I'm hoping I'll never need it.
  23. If you happened to be watching the weather over the last week a lot of boats left 3 or 4 days ago. Opua/NZ is about to see 20 boats plus arriving over the next few days. As Matt said , they sucked up the SE for a day dropping SW or west, motored in the middle by the looks and are riding that low pressure in now. I mean what's left of the low, the SW.
  24. That is fascinating, do you know if it was being reported elsewhere on the wed, Puff? It's valuable because as we all know tight isobars like that are always worse than the wind barbs say. Monday at 1 roughly where Essence was..30 knots. Clearly the plus 50 % rule applied there. What model does James McGregor use as his base? GFS or EC?
