  1. Some good Ravens turn up on TradeMe fairly frequently, pretty cheap and very seaworthy. Often had quite a bit of refurbishment done due to age, would be wary of one that needed work though, wait for one that the moneys been spent on all-ready.

  2. Spent quite a few afternoons sailing round Bream Bay while the F50 SailGP cats were being trialed. Waste of time trying to get close to them, just have to hang around and hope they will swing by.

Got buzzed a few times, wish they came closer too, was some of the most thrilling stuff I've seen on the water, when one of them is coming straight at you at 40+knots its pretty awesome. By the time they got to Team USA and AUS they had them pretty dialed in and were happy to come closer, the early teams looked a bit out of control and kept their distance. Each to their own I guess, I love sailing.

  3. I'm sure you have some very witty and amusing suggestions, but alas this thread is in a marine forum and the topic is now completely un-marine related. Any continued discussion of non marine subjects, however witty and amusing they may be, is a clear contravention of the very strict and serious site rules around marine related talk only. After all, this is a 'no smalltalk' zone and we wouldn't want to be found in breach of the rules by talking of anything of lesser size than marine things (i.e. lesser being smaller, which may be construed as small talking, which is strictly forbidden, on pain of death...)

    ;-)

I just read through the site rules and couldn't find anything to support your statement,

"This is a community of individuals who share a common interest in boating"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I couldn't see anything that said we could only talk about boating stuff, there is some rules about politics, religion and weapons, but otherwise politeness seemed to be the main guideline.

  4. There is a fair bit of 'nonsense' in the other forums too, quite a bit of it sailing related. I think we should have someone censoring all the posts before they go up to make sure they are the truth and nothing but the truth, some of it is definitely just opinion and should not be allowed.

  5. Is this what you are talking about? I sent them an email last week and got this back

Thanks for your email and showing interest in Firefly's Microcell Carbon Foam technology.

We currently do not have any distribution agent in the New Zealand region. However, if you can please let us know what your requirements are. And accordingly, we can supply you with the batteries from our manufacturing unit in India.

Firefly currently has 12V 116Ah and 4V 450Ah model readily available. Catalogue for the same are attached herewith for your ready reference.

Request you to please go through them and let us know if you have any questions.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  6. Managed to get quite a bit of room around me at New Years after the neighbors saw how much my boat sailed around at anchor. Launch would park up watch my boat do a few windward leewards, sometimes with offset mark, nek minnit they up and off, brilliant.

Left the boom tent up during a couple of days of good 25 knots at the barrier, boat didn't move, wouldn't want to try it in a storm but I certainly been thinking about making a riding sail, seen them work on other yachts too.

  7. There was a world champs, in NZ, this year where PL was mandatory, an arrangement to provide cover was advertised for $65 to cover the event, could have been $95 - memory failing.. Someone must have kicked up a stink because the NOR was amended to make insurance " highly recommended".

Pretty good earner $65 x 120 boats for 3days coverage. At annualised rate its ridiculous. Add it up for all the regattas and classes, never heard of a claim being made. Pretty good earner for some outfit close to YNZ.

  8. Could someone please advise how an 8 year old can take out public liability insurance for dinghy racing as required for most regattas?

I was under the impression you had to be 18 to enter into a legally binding contract at least.

    Comments also appreciated.

  9. I recently sent an email to update my details for a PLB. Reply was that they had no record of my registration so I sent them the email I got back when registering. A bit disconcerting but they assured me they would have come looking if I set it off but just wouldn't know who or what they were looking for.

  10. I made this submission on the current discussion document:

"I am being charged for a pest monitoring program because I own a mooring. I find this grossly unfair.

    • I did not cause the introduction of the pests, the pathway for fan worm has been clearly identified

    • The likely pathway for further pest introduction is not likely to be local vessels- as clearly described in the documents discussing marine pests.

    • I regularly antifoul and clean my vessel, if it becomes infested, it is from a source out of my control or causing.

    • The benefits to monitoring are the same for the whole population, all I get is additional costs, I pay to get less net benefit than the general population. I receive no direct benefit from the charge or “service”

    • Charging me is inconsistent with other pest monitoring and eradication programs nationwide

I submit that any monitoring program costs need to be born by all beneficiaries of the program, ie the general population. Possibly supplemented by charges (fines) against those actually proven to be introducing pests, or breaking the rules.

The likely hood of a vessel becoming fouled and therefore transporting a pest is greatly increased due to the recent banning of previously effective additives to the bottom paints and restrictions on the facilities or techniques for cleaning hulls, this was intended to make the environment “cleaner”, I would suggest we are now suffering to a certain extent from unintended consequences.

There are modern additives that are likely effective against current pests, approved for use in a number of areas worldwide, however the paint suppliers in NZ are in no hurry to attempt to obtain approval for use in NZ due to cost, difficulty and free benefit to competitors. Again the desire to protect the environment is actually preventing the introduction of beneficial measures.

Please consider very carefully the costs of any changes, against their likely effectiveness. If it is proven that there is a net benefit of any spending, charge the beneficiaries of that spending and not a captive target guilty by association."
