1. All good Wheels. Just posted that link as an example. Even if you can find cheaper than advertised in that link, still expensive batteries, so sort of need to know they are within my limited "techno" brain ability when it comes to electrical stuff. For now, my cheapo AGM's do the trick -- but when I take off over the horizon (one day) I will be wanting to investigate further into alternative options to AGM. And yeah, what the heck is going on with the website? Why does Matt not change the platform a better one?
2. Ok so see this link: https://www.mrpositive.co.nz/12.8v-200ahr-lifepo4-deep-cycle-battery Right - so Lifepo4 -- if I get these type of batteries for my (small) house system (its a 26' foot yacht with no fridge / freezer, just basic electronic needs via 150watts of solar) then do I need some fancy pants "monitoring system' to ensure safety? I am a set and forget type of guy, when it comes to electrical needs. The thought of having to be some battery wizard and having to do some fancy "monitoring" of these type of batteries so I don't blow me and my boat up - turns me off. So, tech
3. The fella in question has a Youtube account in his real name, and I dont think he is doing anything dodgy on trademe. I get a laugh out of his Youtube vids as he just cant make up his mind on a boat. Eternal optimist -- I think so. If I found out someone had made unsubstantiated claims against me in a thread like this, I'd be contacting the site owner and threatening legal action. Just because he buys a lot of cheap boats shouldn't have you lot able to slander his reputation on an open forum like this. Just my two cents, but if I was IT I would be deleting this thread.
4. I was on Fantail at Christmas. No re rig needed, Boat is in great shape for its age. Set up below for long periods aboard. Make him an offer. Who gets asking price on boats these days.
5. Video embedding is working in preview, but not live. Will just post the link https://youtu.be/yMZRUc3HBcI
6. Sending the camera up the mast.
7. Yeah, I'll have a bit of that Sir.
8. I contemplated pushing north with this up my backside. But then I started thinking I might get stuck up in BOI if this proves indeed to be the weather pattern for January, and I don't feel like bashing back to Auckland, single handed, with a less than powerful engine. Guess I could always leave the boat up there....
9. Hi Bigal, I'm on my first single handed trip and I'm hiding away up in Sandspit. It's either "rotten luck" or "hey its NZ weather, what do you expect" Either way I'm slightly peeved at this current weather pattern, which is, as you say, more like obnoxious spring weather. Both Windytv and Predict Wind have this hanging around till Wed / Thurs next week. Luckily I have till the end of the month left to do some more enjoyable cruising, as you would hope sooner or later a less severe weather system that looks more like actual summer, might arrive. But, it is NZ so who knows.
10. RIght'o y'all can get back to the Elliot and it's mainsail in a sec. Sorry for the thread drift, unintended as it was, but since a few "damming" comments have been made about junk rigs, I will say my piece and move on... Firstly, Ok...guilty as charged....I made a light hearted comment of a literally just a few words, way early on in this thread about changing to junk rig...(I mean, a JR sail is really easy to raise sail, and to reef) nothing more nothing less, not meant to be taken seriously......so anyway, yeah- I'm guilty as charged for the so called "unhelpful" comment. But jeez, I
11. Talking of pointless, unhelpful comments......
12. LOL Indeed. Those tax dodging white collar lot then. You know who I mean. Havent ebay and amazon been charging tax at checkout for a while...or perhaps just on goods of a certain value. Anyway, this could quickly escalate into a political dog fight - so if Matt is reading, I promise I won't retort when good old Armchair comes in off the long run bowling bouncers! Cheers
13. I'm too stupid for words then.
14. Now, if the Business Round Table would just pay their share.
15. Could you technically attach the railblaza rowlick attachment to a beefier wooden oar....or are they only good enough for the lightweight aluminium jobbies? And yes, I have a pair of the aluminium type oars, and geez they are very flimsy.
16. Really? Conventional wisdom is that inflatables row like crap. Encouraging if not the case with this brand as I prefer to row for fitness and less mucking around than with outboard.
17. Dunno Fish, but it works. What I can say is batteries are wired in parallel. A marine electrician wired it all up for me, and when I flick the switch everything works as it should. Need someone like Wheels or Matt to educate us on how this all works.
18. Correct, Grant. I needed to get a MPPT with a 'booster' due to only being 9v nominal panels, so I got three of these (I chose to have one controller for each panel to have contingency) : https://sunforgellc.com/gvb-8/ Apparently, being 9v panels is why they (GoFlex) can get away with such "skinny" 50w panels (which I needed for my small yacht with not much deck or cabin-top space). Don't quote me on that, as I what I know about electrical stuff you could fit on your fingernail. Back on Genasun controllers: I am not a rich man, but I didn't want to skip on getting cheap sh#t when it
19. One year in on Goflex and no issues. They have been walked on semi regularly, spilt some 'Spray & Walk Away' by mistake, and of course exposed to all weather. But - it's only a year, and at $400 a pop (I have three 50 watt jobbies) I would hope they last quite a few more. FWIW, the guy that sold me the Goflex, gave me a scare story about Juice panels at the time...I dismissed it at the time as "of course he would say that about the competitor" - but then maybe IT's results means he wasn't talking total porkies. Anyway, as I say - one year in on Goflex and all is well so far.
20. Can I expand this thread a little bit by asking.....what are a good set / brand of 12V chargeable drills to keep on my boat...? Something better than cheap chinese sh%t but not so expensive I would have to take out a mini mortgage.
21. Thanks Fish, forgot about that one
22. As emailed to me today from Westhaven Marina. "Please be aware that these vessels manoeuvre between 8-14 times a day, taking around two minutes each time." What do you think? Not that one can do much about it now... Just use the other entrance? Or is that entrance due to be closed off?
23. Panuku and Simon Herbert...pure evil. Words cannot describe how I hate Panuku to their rotten fetid core. Councillors John Watson and Wayne Walker -- thank God we do have some GOOD public servants willing to fight the fight against punks like Panuku, and Herbert.
