I need a boat builder for a few days to help out completion of my refit. Would be working alongside an experienced guy, but he needs a hand to finish things off. Urgent because I launch in three weeks.

Nope. The Cruz Pro are good and a very fair price but don't have the same level of fruit the AA's do.... some of which are over fruited for most people.
Also the Cruz Pros are for chain only rodes. They will sort of do a Rope/chain rode but accuracy will drift each use and you'd need to recalibrate them a lot. That will quickly get annoying.
There is another manufacturer, Italian, who makes wireless counters not unlike the Cruiz pros but with a splash more fruit. Their flasher wireless one with up/down winch control is 299 Euros (450 NZ +/-) but again chain only. They do a nice count only for around 160 Euro (250 NZ +/-)
That's where Auto Anchor shine, Brian one of the brains behind it (died a few years back way too young) recognised another companies new winch would be a game changer so built in to the AA's the ability to recognise and work with rope chain combo rodes. The product he saw that triggered that was the Freedom500 auto rope to chain winch made by a mob called Maxwell, a market near 1st and definitely set a new trend in winches.
A little good new NZ story there as the winches Maxwell, then NZ owned, made were designed and built in the Wairau valley and Auto Anchor was designed and built in Northcote. Both have gone on the be world leading products and trend setters.
The counter you want Zozza is the same as mine, cost $2.95, 15 minutes with a tape measure and one cold beer. It's called a permanent marking felt pen

I have a wireless Auto anchor unit ,its a fantastic thing and has a chain counter.
Saved our butt from dragging numb nuts at least once , paid for itself 10 times over.

Who gave permission to sell Westhaven to these Panuku scumbags anyway? Who the f#ck are they? I thought it was supposed to be owned by Auckland City, i.e US the RATEPAYERS.

Yeap and going on the times I got the ticket for overstaying within a minute of arriving.
Maybe the times used on the signs are seconds not minutes
The ticketers are probably very nice people but one or 2 I've seen gave me the impression they weren't employed for their thought processing abilities.
Unbelievable. SO it is as I thought...they are just guessing if you are out sailing or wandered off to do shopping with the wife in Queen St.

I went into Westhaven a month or so back to run a weekend of racing. Got back to a ticket for being parked too long in a space you need a permit to park in, just like the permit that was on my windscreen at the time.
The first I knew of it was when a letter arrived saying as I have ignored everything the price had gone from 65 to 85 notes. On sussing, which took many attempts to get past an automated 'go to the disputes page' bullshit, by simply stating 'I want to speak to a person or get fucked I'll see you in court', it appears I must have missed the ticket and previous letters..... hmmmmmm.

On sussing the time given I thought Hmmmmm.... ticket says 10:03 but the alarm shows me turning it off at 10:05. Even allowing for the 20 seconds to walk from car to alarm and a few minutes for being 'out of synch', someone did show huge enthusiasm to fill their quote or boost their commission cheque.

The lack of parking is a shocker. The white spaces are often chocker block with club members, tradies and people functioning at the Squaddy. The yellow spaces are always more then 50% empty.
Not following: You had a Westhaven parking permit displayed Grant, and still got a ticket?

I would add, in the interests of balance, that there is a rule that you need to keep your boat in a "seaworthy" condition, and the Club does keep an eye on this and has been known to contact boat owners about this.

I just got a ticket!!! I have no idea what for as I have a current permit and i recall the day clearly as it was my birthday. I was parked in the correct place.
Please do follow up and let us know. Sounds like this Marina is hell bent on pissing off berth holders.

No parking issues at Weiti. Nice friendly club too.
And you don't have to go down the ditch past all those nasty wharf extensions and dodge the commercial shipping just to start sailing somewhere nice either. But don't tell anyone, we wouldn't want the word to get around and inadvertently create a parking problem.
Two questions on Weiti, Fish - is there not a long waiting list for piles? And is not entrance a little hairy at times?

I'm not a fan of rules and regulations, but there is no staying aboard on the piles at all. Thats the deal, as for the parking its probably a mistake as you are not allowed to park n' ride so to speak, using the marina as a carpark while you wander of to work, so if no boat yet on the berth they may think youre abusing the system.
As for the cost or renting, its a bitch but its worth it- for now!
And so how would they determine this? How would they know if you are sailing or not? I don't recall filling in my car rego details on their forms - are we going to get to the stage now where berth holders are going to have to line up at the marina office and "check in" like little school children?
"Hi there Dear Marina Sir - I am parked here today, with my PERMIT, because I PAY YOU for my berth, which COMES WITH a parking permit - but I am off sailing so PLEASE do not put nasty little letters under my windscreen wipers.
It's a crock of sh#t. Yeah sure, non-berth holders parking in the white areas all day - yep ticket 'em. They are not customers of the marina. They don't pay a cent. No problem hammering them.
But berth holders displaying their parking permit? No bloody way should they be hassled.

I'm missing something here. You pay for a berth and with it goes a carpark. I would have thought that's the end of it. You park your boat while you go work ? You park your car because that's what you pay for ? The exclusive use of a marina berth and ditto for carpark. Don't have that problem in the Waikato. Don't see the difference between parking to go sailing and parking to go to work. Surely working to pay for the rent is marina related ?

I sometimes leave my car for a day while I'm not undertaking "marina based activities" - because I have been known to have too many rums after wednesday night racing and not be able to drive home. It's then a logistical nightmare to get up and collect the car before work so I tend to do it after. Wonder if I'm about to start getting letters too?

My concern is this: I am going to be sailing lots. Sometimes off for week or two or more. So of course as a bertn holder I want to be able to leave my f*&king car at the marina that I pay GAZILLIONS per month, while I am off sailing. So, what happens then? "Oh yes, he has a permit, but where is he?....oh, we will just presume he is not doing marrina based activities, so lets ticket or tow him....."
Jeezuz, If I get this nasty letter again I really am going to go to another marina, even though less convenient.

So I bit the bullet, and am now renting a berth at the marina, although my boat isn't launched yet, I launch in a matter of weeks and wanted to secure a berth for the summer.
I am on holiday at the the moment and have been parking at Westhaven, displaying my permit, and going sailing on a mates boat. Went up to Gulf Harbour couple nights, sailed back this evening.
I get back this evening, after the marina has closed, and their is a letter under my windscreen wiper.
It starts off like this: "We noticed that you parked your car before leaving Westhaven to go elsewhere".
Really? You noticed wrong, idiots. I was sailing, you know, out there on the Waitemata, that place full of saltwater.
Are they hiding in the bushes at 6:30am sussing out people".
It goes on... "Although you are a berth holder, and displaying a permit, we wanted to let you know that under out terms and conditions, permit holders , and all using the Carparks at Westhaven, are only entitled to while they are here for Marina related activities".
Well, actually I was. But - even if I went off somewhere else - what business of it of theirs, and more importantly - where is their proof? So, that presumably means you can't wander off to Swashbucklers and have a beer and a meal after a days sailing because that would presumably not be classed as "Marina related activities"?
What the f**k is going on here? We pay these buggers ENORMOUS amounts of money each month to rent a berth, and now they are trying to scare off people who are entitled to park their with a permit from not being able to park there!
If they were to start ticketing berth holders displaying their permits - then I think they would have holy hell to pay.
By the way, this week there have been ACRES of parking spaces, both permitted and unpermitted - at least when I arrived. In fact, during the week I don't recall seeing the place anything other than practically deserted during business hours.
I really am not sure I want to continue renting a berth with these people if they are going to start acting like Nazis to people that actually have a godammned parking permit!

Well..I was thinking if you set it when the boat is over the anchor, let out - say, 30m. add some on for the boat length dependent where your anchor watch to gps is set up, add 10m contingency for tide change, so you set it for 45-50m in this scenario.
Just wanted to know if my thinking here would be on the right track.

I recently purchased a Vesper Marine 750 AIS (Receiver only).
It has an excellent anchor watch. Very low draw, and means I don't have to eff about with apps on a phone.
Anyway - whats a good rule of thumb for the amount of distance to set the anchor watch at?

How long is that piece of string and is it green, red or white string. How much do you want to light up and how brightly? For some, just one light is all that is needed, but for others, they may want more.
Well, Wheels, just bright enough so I don't bang my head or knee on something making my way to the head at midnight! In all seriousness, I can't stand bright light, much prefer a more subtle ambience. I was hoping to get away with two lights, one in the main cabin, and one in the for'ard area, but no idea of what lumens or whatever, as never had any experience fitting lights to a small yachts cabin.

Could someone with experience explain to me why they did not just run down the coast (wind was from north or north east quadrant wasn't it?) until either conditions abated, or a much easier option than breaking seas in Whangarei Harbour entrance was found?
I am not making judgement on them, wouldn't dream of it with my own lack of experience, just wanting input from those that have been there done that in similar situations.
