  1. I definitely agree on the advice to contact Mariner Insurance.  They were great to deal with when purchasing my boat, and they were even better to deal with recently when some light fingered toe-rag had away with my outboard..

Good luck with the purchase.  I hope you'll be putting together an Insta' feed or YouTube channel to share your adventures..

  2. Hey Martin,

I'm in a very similar boat (pun intended) to you..  Learned to sail at Port Nic' just before Covid,  and made a start at making the dream come true last Novemberish.
I bought a Compass Southerly 23 off a guy in Napier, and it's now afloat in Mana Marina.   It's been a hell of a learning curve, and I've only actually been out sailing once, so far.
I am enjoying being a boat owner though, it's even more expensive than you think, and can be frustrating, and worrisome. But it's bloody magic as well,  all at the same time.
I've been finding it really easy to find excuses to not go out sailing.  All the "what if's"  are easy to find.  What if this breaks, or that breaks,  or if this happens or that happens, or [insert irrational reason(s) here]
The people out at Mana have been awesome so far though.  Really friendly and welcoming of new people.  I can't recommend them highly enough.
I mentioned my worries to one guy, and before I knew it,  we were off.. and nothing broke and everything was just as the dream said it would be.
I realise I'm not really adding anything to your question , other than to big up the Mana angle.  You could definitely do worse than get yourself set up in Mana.
Good luck with your boat search.

  3. I need a new Adjustable stopper for the main sheet traveller on my wee lump of pride and joy.  Trouble seems to be that it's not a common profile.  Burnsco, and all the online folks have an abundance of "I" profile stuff but I can't see any with the profile shown in the photos.  Anyone recognise it? Even if I can find it who the manufacturer might have been, that could help.

  4. I have effected a small repair job to the rudder blade and I'm ready to finish the job.  I need to get some antifoul on there but am unsure what to use as a primer / undercoat.  This https://www.burnsco.co.nz/shop/boating/paint-maintenance/primer-undercoat/altex-multipurpose-primer-undercoat  looks like it might be just the ticket.  But then again, it might be absolutely the wrong ticket.  I used West System Epoxy if that makes a difference. Hope that's not too vague a question.

  5. First of all,  Happy New Year everyone.   It's been a while since I posted,  been a bit busy.

I finally realised my dream of the last 20 odd years and I have managed to buy myself a boat.  What a reality check.   All you jokers make it sound and look so easy..

Oh yeah,  just get yourself, this , or get one of those, and do this and that..  far out!!!!  I've not been so stressed in my entire life.   and it's not even in the water yet.

It's a 23' Southerly,  the hull was built by Compass and she was finished off elsewhere after Compass went out of business.   "Swift" spent some years in Turangi and was raced on Taupo before finding her way to Napier, where I got her from.  She's now in Mana.  On the hard awaiting re-rigging and some tidying up before taking up residence in the Marina.

I've only had here in the area for a week or so,  and some days I actually enjoy being a boat owner and tinkering about with her, and doing stuff..  Other times I want to curl up in a ball and cry like a baby...

Hopefully these aren't uncommon feelings for new boat owners,  and also hopefully the despair and helplessness will be short lived..

Another problem with e-charts is that it is pretty easy to zoom out a bit to far on your nav screen -

and if you do that, some hazards will not be shown.

I can think of several fairly recent examples of boats hitting the beach and/or reefs for that reason.

Indeed,  that's the reason Team Vestas Wind hit a reef in the Volvo Ocean Race back in 2014.

  7. cold showers..
saves money on heating water, running fans or requiring domes.  keeps showers short, especially in winter.

add in the health benefits..  it's a winner on all fronts.

Comfort is the enemy of the soul.
