  1. I need a 1m long leader to go between the halyard and the head of the spinnaker to accommodate the new you-beaut sock / douser. I'm ok with any solution that is easy, cheap and good (yeah, yeah choose any two...). Halyard is some skinny dyneema-looking cord with a pelican on it. Have at me with your suggestions.
  2. I started a repair to the cabin top a couple of weeks ago. I went out today to continue with filler and hopefully sanding and a primer coat. It wasn't to be. But I got a Mitre10 tarp rigged as a boom tent and soldiered on fitting the diesel heater for winter sailing. The heater unit is located in the rear starboard locker, and pumps hot air through 80mm Marley downpipe to a floor level vent in the galley, port side of the companionway. Yeah, odd to not have it all on the same side of the boat, but engineering limits were run into. It was a relatively pleasant afternoon except
  3. Hospitality NZ says that the cancelation of events that evening was a "kick in the guts to hardworking restaurateurs and bar owners" and will have a huge impact on employment with many skilled barmen and waitresses leaving for better opportunities overseas.
  4. ...and what the possible impact will be on the value of your house...
  5. I once rode motorcycles. This was a fav almost entirely because of its outrageous paintwork. It certainly wasn't because of its pinpoint accurate handling! I only owned it a short time - its ability to turn petrol and oil into smoke outstripped my ability to feed it. Picture is not mine, but it is identical in almost every respect.
  6. Avis rent-a-car round-the-world race Vende is so passe
  7. that explains the radio silence lately...
  8. part-way there... 8m of tube constructed, 4m to go
  9. Building a spinnaker sock Mrs A is terrified of putting up the spinnaker due to my ineptitude on the foredeck. Between guys, sheets, poles, halyards uphauls, downhauls, and canvas, I am less perplexed as overwhelmed. Getting it up isn't the problem (typical bloke) but pulling it all back in is exciting. So, having read a few instructables and watched a couple of videos, I figured we can put together a reasonable spinnaker sock/douser to reduce the amount and volume of Mrs A's screaming to a bare minimum. Today is ideal weather for such construction given its raining and sh!tty
  10. Rob would be up for that!
  11. Its not having trouble. Just not here.
  12. because then it becomes just another one-design series. To no small extent AC has been about the obscene amounts of money the ultra-rich competitors throw at it to win in a boat that fits a design envelope, not a specific design. To move away from this is to move away from the entire (unwritten) purpose of AC
  13. doubtful. Proper cyclists hate riding in pedestrian traffic as much as pedestrians hate the cyclists.
  14. you would've been around t oconsult on it then wouldn't you?
  15. There - just added $750m to the funding pool!

  17. I'm guessing they are not targeting the NZ market on public image any more. Its not Air NZs name on the sail....
  18. you would think, if it were just a sport. It's not. Its entertainment. That drove the race format at the cup just been and previous - fast, tv-friendly timeframes, at times that suit northern hemisphere live TV as much as they suit the local tide and weather conditions. AC is a business, and its the business of entertaining sport. End of story.
  19. Or Peter Jackson, or Tourism NZ, or any other business that sticks its hand out and says "We need more $$$ but there will be a byproduct return ot the country". The problem TNZ now have is of their own making though - the NZ bit in the name. Whether it was a primary purpose or not, the strongly implied message was "we are doing this for the country - winning will provide a return to NZ". They traded on that and the jingoistic stuff that goes with it, and it should be no surprise if Mr and Mrs J Public feel a bit shafted.
  20. Mike Hosking. He loves mirrors.
  21. As I understand it, one problem they are trying to address is loss of experience ie crew leaving to bigger offers from other syndicates. This takes money. Money requires big sponsors. Big sponsors want lots of eyeballs and hype. We are too small, too far away for sponsors to see that value. These issues apply to all the teams to some extent. Sponsors far prefer a northern hemisphere location for issues of exposure. Its the same drivers as why we no longer have international rally rounds here in NZ, our rugby team is becoming an american product, our golfers play over
  22. I reckon too. He's keen on FRP rather than timber. Go figure.
  23. the cost of interprotect is cheaper than the cost of your time reapplying after a failed coating. If you are goi9ng back to a bare hull, two/three coats of inter followed by three coats of whatever antifoul you choose, hotcoating as you go ie recoat when the previous layer is tacky, not dry.
