We have recently returned to Westhaven after a 5 year absence, is it just me but the water quality in Westhaven which was never that great has certainly taken a turn for the worst since the closing off the breakwater entry /exit.

I agree... despite Westhaven going on about how many "clean marina" and enviro awards it has won... I think the water quality is poor. I always thought there should be some tunnels under the road in the vacinity of Buoy so the marina could flush more effectively.

  3. I think it's time for all yacht clubs to start to work together rather than competing and diluting every event!

There are far too many races with the result being the competitors are spread thinly.

There is no real break between summer and winter racing... it all becomes a bit monotonous...

Wednesday night racing starts next week... most years a few boats are caught out and aren't ready or organised for the start of the season... miss a few races and then it's easy to think I'm not in the series ... so you miss a few more. Personally I think a Labour Weekend kick off would be a better.

Also series have got too long... when you get to 10+ race days the series winners often come down to the boats that sailed every race... life and other events get in the way and inevitably some competitors can't do every race... A shorter series makes it easier to plan other events around it. Look at the most popular series.... SSANZ Lewmar Triple Series, only 3 races, spaced a month apart. Easy!

Weirdly they have shortened the course for Wealthpoint 1, meaning that Young88s are allowed to go to Gannet Rock, but not Stewart 34s or Farr 1020s!

It’s not about the S34s and 1020’s (who probably should be doing the next course length up) but more about the Piedy’s, 727 and boats at the smaller end. With overall handicap prizes for each course SSANZ needs to ensure courses changes are the same for all boats competing on each course…. 88s are a bit different as they as a class have decided to switch between course options for each race which means they are only racing themselves

  5. Pretty much guaranteed it's the exhaust elbow clogged up... same symptoms when it happened to me with a D1-20. Once it starts to show these symptoms it rapidly gets worse and you have to keep reducing rpm to stop the black stuff coming out the exhaust. You will probably find the elbow is so clogged your little finger won't even fit in the hole! HDI marine do a nice stainless replacement elbow for less cost than the factory one.

After replacing elbow you need to check max rpm (should be over 3k) and if you can't achieve this then change the prop.

Also running the motor a bit harder will help burn the carbon and increase the time before it blocks again.

  6. MRX Ownership Night

There is a MRX Ownership Night on Tuesday 22nd July from 6:30pm at RNZYS

    EVERYONE INTERESTED IS INVITED

There is NO COST to attend except for and food or drink you purchase.

RNZYS have a Tuesday Night Curry and Beverage Special as well as their regular menu.

If you plan to attend please use the following link to RSVP

    https://rnzys.org.nz/cal/mrx-ownership-information-evening/

The MRX Ownership Q&A is a follow up from the great article published in the latest Breeze magazine (For this who haven’t seen it yet the article is reproduced below).

The objective is to dispel any misunderstandings myths and secrets about MRX’s and explain to anyone interested exactly how the model works. We welcome current Owners along to share their experience and also potentially meet future owners.

Please forward this email to anyone you think could be interested!

In the current economic climate the MRX Ownership model makes more sense than ever and is most probably the most cost effective way to race a keelboat!

  7. I wouldn't do anywhere near them! I had Andrew at Dolphin do some repairs to an inflatable... poor communication, wasn't ready when promised, had to visit 4 times... final visit they hadn't even started on it and lost it in a pile so I waited while it was hunted out and then repaired while I waited.... Repair failed in a few months anyway.

Incredible that after years of putting their hands in the their pockets, looking the other way, pretending there was nothing they could do - resulting in giant divisions with 40 boats - someone on the new committee has shown some initiative, adjusted the cutoffs, and evened up the divisions.  Well done SSANZ!!

I can assure you having previously been on the committee... that there is no hands in their pockets, looking the other way, pretending there was nothing they could do etc etc...  Division cut offs / splits were regularly discussed (and passionately!)... but in a democratic system you need to have the numbers in support before making any changes. Just because something didn't change doesn't mean it wasn't discussed and debated. I think your post is poorly written putting a negative light on the committees of the past who all put in their time on a voluntary basis. Having said that It's always good to see committee's listen and react to competitor feedback.

Couple of yachts on the hard at Westypark looking like they may be getting ready -General Lee and Higher Ground

General Lee was never going to do the triple series.... the co-owners will be racing the mighty Hard Labour once more.

There is no set programme yet for General Lee, the plan is to get her looking good, sounding great and back sailing... once that's achieved then we will look at what racing we want to do.

Seen to many people state all these races they are going to do and they are never ready... We will get the boat ready then decide on the races and challenges to take on!!!

But you can bet the boys are pretty excited to see what the General Lee can do....

Higher Ground has just had the rig pulled out for a check and service.

It would be beneficial to add a with/without weed option to the spreadsheet as well.

Too many variables... Arev you carrying weed onboard or wrapped around appendages? and how much weed?

  11. Saildrives are smoother, no alignment issues, less vibration etc. On Hard Labour (Farr 1020) the sail drive has never had a thing done beyond normal servicing. I suspect the Volvo sail drive is better than the Yanmar unit (not cone clutch?). However when only 20 hp is going through the same unit as much more powerful engine can be hooked up to... it is inherently over engineered so probably pretty bulletproof

  12. Rockford Fosgate's are tough and exceptionally loud... Their bigger speakers perform best at volume and lose a bit of definition down low but the 6.5" is great throughout the range. I would never go back to fusion.

And you want the M2 version...

Still liking the west.... I reckon Thomas Ruyant will soon be leading. Le Cam will need to sail angles DDW while Thomas is reaching at pace

2 days later and look who is now leading...and I think rich will get richer in the short to medium term...

So has the PHRF experiment been a failure? New World Victoria Park Div 1 has gone from 33 entries last year to only 24 entries. PHRF has scared them off!

Also Sculpins handicap went from 596 in race 1 to 612 in race 3. I thought PHRFs were only adjusted once a year?

To be fair you need to combine both NW 1 and NW 2 divisions in 2024 to compare with NW1 entries in 2023

if you do that results aren’t that different in terms of numbers.

The reasons for PHRF have already been mentioned in other posts.

PHRF like any other system isn’t perfect but it’s the best we have and the more races that use it the better it will be.

Interestingly if Sculpin’s PHRF hadn’t changed before the last race they would have finished 14th in the race and 3rd overall in the series. I suspect as Sculpin was at one extreme of the PHRF range in the division they were a big beneficiary of tidal advantage during the first 2 races but suffered tidal disadvantage during the final race.
