  1. Definitely keen on dripless solution, but will save that expenditure for my next boat. Looking to upgrade in the not too distant future....
  2. Wow - yet another boat ownership rabbit hole! Lucky I'm a nerd at heart. Lateral - would love to buy a little of that packing from you if that's an option. Will PM you.
  3. Thanks guys. Ultra x reads very well but cant see a NZ supplier. Where did you source it?
  4. Anyone know the right size of stuffing? It's the bronze factory gland with a 1 inch shaft. Boat a long way away and want to get sorted before haulout in a couple of weeks...
  5. Thanks Guys - will give No.5 a go.
  6. Hi all, Looking to repaint my Raven 26's bum shortly. The International Awlcraft I used previously was heavily fouled after a year with barnacles and oysters featuring heavily. Any thoughts on good products? My boat isn't used as much as it should be so can be on the mooring for months at a time....
  7. Thanks guys for this. This boat is not in Auckland or anywhere within easy reach of a good surveyor, hence the desire to check out as much as possible first. Definitely intending to tap as much of the decks as possible from above and below. Thanks for the offer of the meter lateral, I'll give it some thought. It looks like a great solution.
  8. Thanks for the intel on the decks. It's as I suspected. I guess we just build in the time and cost to get the decks ripped off sooner rather than later in any offer we put forward. Just a question - in checking out the underlying plywood (which appears very sound) does a moisture meter give a very reliable indication? I'm not hearing any huge objections to the construction. I agree that not having epoxy on the inside would be a show stopper but it appears well sealed. Not sure of the thickness of the hull.
  9. That's all really helpful. I've been on plenty of Dbl diag kauri boats but have never seen this construction before. Those widely spaced ribs did catch my attention. The keel bolts definitely look bronze so not so concerned there. The other thing with this boat is some tired looking teak decks. I know the general concerns and issues people have with them but these are still watertight but appear layed very tightly together. Is that normal? In terms of recaulking, should we be thinking about routing a small groove between planks?
  10. Well known kiwi designer (don't want to interest others in the boat right now!) and built in a Whangarei yard but owner unsure which. Planking is definitely edge glued. Just learned what a rove is - cheers!
  11. Hi all, Am looking at purchasing a boat with a construction that's new to me, and would appreciate any thoughts. It's single strip planked kauri, glassed on the outside and appears to be evadured (epoxied) on the inside. Not sure about fasteners but potentially riveted. She's late 1970s and seems very well built. Pics below
  12. Hi - interested in $300 for this? I'd need to get it shipped but will pay.
  13. Hi - has it got switches or cabling with it?
  14. Thanks wheels - that's super helpful.
  15. Recently the boat has become quite smelly after a period of motoring. I think I've narrowed it down to a leak on the high pressure side at the injector - see photo. Just wondering if its a good idea to snug it up or do i need a pro? If tightening it up is the the upper or lower nuts? All thoughts appreciated. ..
  16. Thanks all - sounds like plenty of people still do it, but perhaps luck of the draw as to whether its frowned upon eh? Certainly not interested in having an adverse affect on the environment but it seems like i can make sure that's the case.... any other thoughts appreciated..
  17. Hi all I live a long way from my boat but am getting to see her over Easter. Feels a bit like a conjugal visit.... Problem is she needs a fresh coat and all the yards are closed over that weekend (i'm up in the Mahurangi). I'm tempted to give her a coat between tides on the piles near my mooring but not sure if this is still seen as ok. Will obviously make sure all the scrapings are collected and I'm not planning to sand. Am I an eco- terrorist? I've asked the harbourmaster and they talked about taking 'reasonable steps' but it certainly felt like one person's opinion rather t
  18. If you are a client of my food bag, or know someone who is, they use wool insulation to keep the meat and perishables cold in transit. I've used this to clean up diesel and motor oil and it works amazingly well.
  19. Just be aware that replacing the ccfl might not be the issue as the inverter (driver) is often the issue
  20. I had this happen. it is the backlight. Difficult to know whether its the little flourescent tube or the driver that has failed, and you don't know until you replace both unless you can test with an oscilloscope, and even then it's not super easy to diagnose. I replaced mine with an led backlight but you lose control of the brightness via the software and the repair in my case at least looks very home brew - I've probably lost waterproofness in the unit for one but it suits me for the moment.

Thanks guys. This is all really useful perspective. It'd be awesome to know what many of these listings are actually going for - seems like the market is still adjusting downwards from what I can see - lots of good boats for sale sitting around for a looooong time.

Howdy all, I'm in the hunt for an upgrade to my raven 26 (in time) to a more family friendly keeler, and am one of those blokes that can't quite make up my mind on what I'm after. I keep oscillating between gulf type cruisers to bomb proof coastal and offshore capable boats. Lets not go there just now, but one of the boats that keep coming up are Davidson 31's. They look to have a nice layout, and seem like good value as a gulf / sounds type boat. I can't seem to find many thoughts on the either here or on the web. Anyone got any wisdom they could share?
  23. I solved the two battery issue by using a sun saver duo. https://www.morningstarcorp.com/products/sunsaver-duo/ Independent charging channels and weighting (will put 10% effort into starter and 90 into house or 50/50.) Got mine for around $200.

Yea - the gold standard is actually a hall effect sensor - no physical contact like a pot so much longer life and generally better specd. Was surprised that even modern rudder position sensors are still resistors. Thinking of springing for one of these if the pot gives me trouble: https://www.megatron.de/en/products/hall-effect-multiturn-rotary-encoder/hall-effect-multi-turn-rotary-encoder-hsm22.html

Yep they are parts for making a 3d printer that are available direct. Again, the innovation of DIY manufacture of the printer themselves has spawned an industry of people supplying parts for them at very low cost.
