Watched the delayed coverage, pretty disappointed really - even less tactics and more processional than Bermuda. Some occasional stunning shots but they will have to do more to keep it interesting especially with the AC coming up soon. Bit weird hearing the commentators refer to the "Chinese" and "Japanese" and then name their Aussie skipper. A spectacle I guess but hardly the pinnacle of the sport in my view.

There’s an SR26 on trademe that I would put at the top of the list. Depends what you want to do, but I like faster boats and find they teach you more than the heavier boats like D28’s etc. Also in the winter you can race them, that makes you go out in pretty shitty weather which serves you well when it roughs up while cruising. Also in the sub 30 ft range, outboards can be nice as diesels can be expensive to fix. Outboard craps out, you can take it off to fix and repower for a fraction of the cost of a diesel repower. IT, i’m Thinking about a SD10 drive for my 35ft Elliot, displacement around 4T, needs to be cockpit mounted and will get very wet. Are these units worth a look? Cable drive and rudder feedback integrated only the push rod in the elements. Will get a matching NAC core pack to replace my ray marine unit. All the rest of my gear is b and g Vulcan/triton. Don’t trust my Raymarine Tiller drive.

I freedive, but in the middle of winter I want to get in and get out as quick as possible, takes me 25 minutes with a tank, with breathing up etc it takes an hour with free diving. Free diving is much more dangerous as you are working hard scrubbing a hull or doing other work under water = higher co2 build up = more chance of shallow water blackout when surfacing after scrubbing the bulb.

It cost me $400 to set up a tank based system with a tank + 12m hose. Get 3 cleans to a fill. End up using the tank for 10minutes or so a time. You do end up puffing a bit of air through as it’s hard work scrubbing a hulk. The hose means no bcd or hard metal bits to get in the way or do damage. I have found being weighted neutral at 2metres works best. Good for cleaning the bulb but positive on the hull so I float up and stick to the bottom. Cheaper than a hookah unit. You don’t need a dive ticket to clean a boat, just remember not to hold you breath and not much can go wrong.

I’ve got a sprit on my boat that carries the forestay about 75cm forward of the bow. Just wondering what the impact on sail trim will be if I bring the forestay back to bow proper and reduce headsail area accordingly - this won’t be that much less as will ditch the furler and tack to the deck at the sme time which will give me about 50cm more hoist. Can then go from 100% to 110% jibs. Could then run flying Genoa/ code zeros to power up the boat when not hard on the wind. I know it will cost a bit of power in the light but can anyone advise if this will massively impact trim and balance. Th

Hardest part with rigging them is getting the mast up, boom is super easy to clip on. Only advantage with a boom lessons is they aresaferin gybesI guess. H16 Windrush Buffalo are all cheap and fun beach cats, if you can leave with the mast up they are really quick to jump n and go.None of those are exactly high performance but they are fun reaching, downwind and playing in waves as they have no centreboards. Looking at upgrading the drive on my Raymarine x5 soon and was wondering what options were out there. So far it's the Raymarine tiller drive ram ($1200) or the Pelagic ram ($320 USD). Navisafe from Burnsco - a railblaza product that uses the railblaza mount system, 3 AAA baterys and is led. If you get the Nav light set-up you can use the stern only setting but you will also be covered for emergency nav light in cat 3. About $100 with mounts. Otherwise a set of emergency LED nav lights will set you back $40 odd at burnsco and just use the white light. I have the Navisafe all round model on my Kayak and do a lot of night fishing, it lasts ages and has been dunked, dragged through the surf and smacked all over the show. Still going good 6 years in.

This weekend was spent bogging and grinding (and cursing!). The bob stay was slowly falling off and that held the rig up, so needed fixing. Once off the reason for the issues became clear- no filler or reinforcement. The bolts were simply through bolted into duracore which offcourse was now the consistency of soup. When we lived in Waiuku they did a learn to sail graduation where the kids sailed up the manukau to Clark’s beach YC, then camped with the parents overnight. It involved 4 hrs destination sailing, tent pitching, games of spotlight, games of volleyball and bbq food. Had like 30kids. 3 years on my now 12 yr old still remembers it. I think they still do it - they do the whole L2S program with the Clarks beach trip as a goal. I’m not sure foiling is completely the answer but getting away from racing in opti’s I think is. Adventure sailing will bring loads more into the sport. The RS boats are perfect for that and if owned by clubs and leased or rented out make access super easy. Seen a few successful clubs doing that with bic’s where kids co-share and annual lease so they have their own boat on their sailing night. Our local trust is doing well using RS Quests and Feva’s. Bic’s coming yay!. Focussing on thrills and spills and fun. Our kids won’t go back to the club as the old school coaches were so focussed on technique and crappy boats (optis and firebugs). The old attitude that kids should be technically perfect in crappy opti’s is forgetting that sailing is now competing with video games, Bmx and all sorts of other stuff. Actually you do need to join a club to hold a paraglide licence. It’s a regulatory requirement. It allows clubs to inform, educate and advocate for flyers.

I'm looking for a MH kite 1 oz or .75oz to fit my E 10.5. Luff around the 15-16m mark. Fuller shoulders would be nice. Also a running gennaker if there are any occupying anyones garage.

Thanks! plugged a laptop in today after finding the nexus race software buried deep in the internet. Not only can I set the mast offset, I can auto calibrate, downwind shear compensate, build polars and so much more. Way cool. Anyway initial problem is resolved, now to build some polars for the boat! No idea why Garmin doesn't market this.

According to Garmin calibration is received and stored in the black box then corrected data is output in n2k- will see what happens, failing that a trip up the mast and tweak is in order.
