    Fuel Cells

While I like the idea of building one so I could match it to the boat in position and weight I do have a strong history of electrocuting myself. "Ah ha, that explains a lot" I hear being said and yes it possibly could So I'd rather buy a pro made device, not only for my safety but everyone else... and the boats. The 2KVA was the target as the cost is bugger all more then the 1KVA version, along with only 6kg heavier. It was originally the 1KVA... still maybe yet if you guys make your minds up So I'm hearing that we are narrowing it down to a Inverter genny with a damn good plug into

ICE = ?? So are we thinking go deeper into a fuel cell or rip into one of those Outback generators Grant and Herdy chatted about or go inverter genny? The idea of being able to whack massive Amps back in real quick and almost on demand is very appealing. As is the ability to easily take the whole thing off when short racing. The Cells don't look quite that easy but I know a tad less than feck all about them so that's only from pictures. Those inverter generator things like this 8.3amp 12V and a 240V plug putting out something (paper says Rated AC Output 1600VA) was the idea but 8
  3. One is NZ GST and the other is Aussie GST. One applies only in NZ the other only in Aussie. Same name but 2 different taxes.

I do very much like those chargers Grant. They are like a gruntier version of the genny I was looking at. Slight price advantage over the fuel cells as well. Yeap they have all sorts. Lots of those flexible solar panels seen everywhere. I have thought about lots of those but I'm as delicate getting around the boats as a Hippo on methamphetamine so I'm concerned I'll stomp them to death. I have a mob sending me some fuel cell info. I'll have a suss of that.

The canting is going to be tricky on many levels right thru to fitting auto pilots. As tricky is what I'm trying to avoid canting is losing it's shine. I'm getting conflicting ideas and advice on twins. Making them is easy, fitting them is easy, cost isn't a concern. I both like and dislike assorted bits with the twins so still pondering that. Visually, not to fussed. A Mack truck doesn't look even 1/100th of the sexiness a DB9 does but the truck is the more efficient of the 2. A single is easy to do. Clean simple but not super effective when heeled a lot, something I'm letting her
  6. I had a mate who Customs didn't make pay GST. He had owned the boat for a long while, it was built in Aussie, and when we brought it to NZ he was living on it. He asked Customs nicely what options he had and they said if he continued to live on it for the next 2 years and didn't sell it 2 more they wouldn't apply the GST to it. There was no duty as it was Aussie built. I do not know if what he ran into was the rules at the time and if they have changed or what but I'd suggest you ask nice while looking poor, ya just never know.

Agree there really isn't a big problem but the questions do have to be asked. I have asked questions of every single thing on the boat no matter what the size and what it does, if it's there it's been sussed, so not to do it of the rudder and possible options would be silly. By doing so I have managed to save weight, make things stronger, make them work smoother, make them easier to use and lots of good stuff. I am quite surprised how many small changes I've made that won't be visible to most who have a suss but do contribute to a better to use boat. Sure none have been targeted at faster

Who knows stuff about these things. Can I get one to run my boat during offshores so it would have to power it, or generate enough power to, for say 20 days non stop, worse case. Just allowing for me having a blonde and zigging when I should have zagged.
  9. Yes my limiting factor is power generation and doing it on a small boat. Fuel cells? I've never considered them and know bugger all about them. But keen to suss if they are reliable. $$$'s? Boys and their toys so while $$ are a consideration if I do get all excited I'll happily sell one of the kids to get a cell. It's knot like that would come as a surprise to them. I am working on the 8.3amp 12V output of those gennys IT. Also I'm doing a known reliable one i.e. Honda or Yamaha rather than a WhoFlungDung so the chances are they will perform as expected. I know the knock offs don't ou

I have a blank canvas so anything can go. Doing 1 or 2 wouldn't be that much different in work to make. Two would be better from a structural point of view, as it would the safety regs. They would be lower load and one would be the required spare. Agree 2 would look a little silly but then the skipper already does and he doesn't really care nor should looks affect a potential performance thing. They do look a tad silly on the Dickson. Drag can be got around with flick up boards...but possibly at the risk of reliability back there maybe and having to flick/deflick when doing inshore sai
  12. The thread is trying to apply cruising in big heavies thinking to racing in lightweights. The 2 are considerably different. Hanging up a 2 sqmt sail on most of your boats would make no difference, on mine I have a 4-5sq/mt sails that has pushed me a long at nearly 4kts. That sail is called the 'Undies changer' i.e. when your undies start changing colour due to the weather we go to that sail. Note that this generation option is very weather dependant. Towing one of those drogue things could make a knot or 2 difference at key times, a noticeable difference at all times unless it's blowin
  13. Unless your AP runs on salt spray and magic you may have forgotten the weight your power generation installation. I have 24.3kg in total with a full fuel load and can put out 8amps on a good day.
  14. I've had one TP for 15 odd years and it's been raced rallied and rolled as well as used to beat a large angry Kahawai to death and open beer bottles. It was second hand when I got it. I have another that's 6 odd years old and done a mother load of work including one long passage when the winds top 55kts for a couple of hours. Both still work exactly as they did the day they came out of the box. Both only get grizzled at when flat running or when motoring. I was 400nm south of Tonga heading home when a 2 year old fully built in commercial Coursemaster AP totally failed. I was mid Tasman whe

Just sussed and rudders aren't mentioned at all nor are they as any by product of any rule. So going to twins would have no rule implications.
  16. I'd have a tiller pilot over anything hydraulic any and every day all day long. Its got to be at least 150 kilos lighter than what your suggesting.

Not quite. There are two 930's. One is the Turboed and all of them are surprisingly similar and getting more so. The other is the old school class who are still all pretty much the same. There are the usual variations with sails but if you have been watching those also are closing up with what's in use today being no where near as widely different as it was 5 years ago. Mine R930 isn't 9.3mts long. I'm assuming none of the others are either.

The ................ may have already decided that along with the ................... The ................. will probably get a few a tad heated as well. Why not one tiller off each with a swerve in it like the multi so no tiller extension needed? 2 rudder and 2 tillers, a built in set of spares. Cassette or flip case them so no weather rudder drag and to allow for floating crap. I'm liking the idea more and more.
  19. Asking around and lack of those does seem to be what is turning many off. Sure the boats look cool, go fast and are technologically pretty damn flash but then so are the F1 cars everyone is turning away from for the same reason. They also site lack of good hard competitive racing with tactics, over taking and things like that. Was talking this morning and while they do technically race it's so zip, zap, done mostly in straight lines there is no chance of it developing into a battle worthy of mention, hell pop off for a quick pee or tomake a coffee and you miss an entire race. Pre the days

Oh yeah, I never thought if that. Has to be at least worth a suss and could be handy seeing we lean over 20 degrees if someone just sneezes. Nice thinking K, I'm onto that like a Rena onto a Astrolabe. No Worries transom strength is wossy pussy girlie blouse in strength compared to the new and improved Reptile. I got to that bit and remembered how you folded NW's in so I made sure mine won't do that. I now have a large grunty carbon beam that goes from grunted up corner to grunted up corner. If that beam goes I will instantly become a R780. But with my new twin rudders the loads shou
  21. It seems the new and improved to some isn't to many others. Someone must be fans of the way it's done at the moment, but it's hard work finding them. Also It seems I'm not in the demographic they want watching even though I am in the demographic that has the ability to shop at many of the sponsors. Not that I know what Oracle actually does bar something software like but I have driven a land rover many times, once right through a large hedge. I have also spendt a few hours having inappropriate thoughts about Emeritaes trolley dollies. What's artimis do? Sounds like a private hospital that

I was sussing prior to asking/telling/offering the fleet P. I know some are thinking about changing. I had a suss of Hot Doggers and she's carrying one very similar to mine, maybe the one mine was copied from, I don't know. Many are similar but not quite. Having driven a few some certainly don't chat as much as mine does and I want to keep that if possible. No worries IT, will do.

I wonder what they are changing to Erice? Willow is right though, I'm hung ..... transom is about all I can claim hung on though Probably a little small FLC. The 930's are quite large for the boat. A spade, na I don't think that would improve much. The existing is chatty and will tell me quickly if I'm pushing something too far .... or not enough. But due to a oppys before I got her, there was a super high speed rudder replacement so it's built a light but heavy. Smithys spare was damn close in size and shape from memory so if Paul has a mold....... I'll suss.
