  1. Oh yeah totally agree 100%. On a pre departure briefing I talk sea sickness and while doing it put a packet of suppositories, a jar of Vaseline and a foot or so of 20mm doweling on the table, them point out if anyone gets really crook I have the cure. It's amazing how many don't suffer after that A fair bit of early trip sea sickness can be attributed to anxiety, especially in newbies. Just be a little cautious you are treating the right thing with the right stuff. Sometimes just getting their head out of that 'I can't see land anymore, I'm about to die!' mindset can work wonders.
  2. Miracles are right in there with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth fairy and smart Australians, they do not exist so don't bother lookin. Some people look at lectronic covered heavy cruisers as perfect boats for lazy operators with a low skill set and no desire to improve them. Those people are about as correct as you are with your folkboat comments. I disagree, to a point, with the race comment. Look at the last TT, for just one example, and you can see why. Again horses for courses. All boats are different, the people using them are different, they are used in different wa

  4. People who chose parties over candidates should be ashamed of themselves. What's the difference between a political party and say Flecthers or Microsoft? Nothing, all are there to get the best deal they can for themselves..... and they all spend moonbeams so their marketing depts can try to convince you otherwise. Actually there is a difference. At least Fletchers and Microsoft spend their earned millions, political parties spends your millions.
  5. It's the software having a hissy fit........ still by the looks. It said it had problems so wasn't posting comments, it seems it lied.... 3 times It's the challenge BK. Sure you can hop aboard and fire up a multitude of lectronics, coffee makers, flat screens, auto charging didos and all the crap many boats seem to deem as 'necessities' these days.... but does it give you the same satisfaction when you get to the other end? Many would say yes but most, if not all of them, haven't done it without. Having done both one is way more of a challenge than the other and with bigger challeng
  6. It's not the size, it how you use it
  7. Holy crap, IT's boat has more computors and lectronics than my entire business uses SatPh is cheap for those who aren't long term cruisers. You can buy block of minutes which last for ages and are cheap. Last suss I was able to get 250min for US$250. Interesting to see Kevin comments on minutes in Aussie, over there seemed to be a stand out as to how expensive minutes were, way more then NZ or the US for the same system, Imarsat. DVD for the odd movie. Music already is on USB's. When you boil it down you can cross oceans with only speed, log, a compass, a chart, a ruler and a penc

  9. With all my playing to date I'd easily pick red first just for the simple fact that it seems 'easier' on my eyes. The blue is harsher, green is just weird and almost wrong, yellow was a 'why would ya?' and white was similar to the blue, quite similar. I have been careful to use the same power and type of lights, gotta play fair. I think it's not so much what colour you have as it is the intensity of whatever colour you have. In my playing we are only talking very small differences, way less than the photos would have you think, so I'm thinking the picked option will most likely be the one
  10. I will have - Compass - 2 stand alone Speed - part of a std instrument package with manual back up depth - part of a std instrument package with manual back up Wind - part of a std instrument package connected to Autodriver Chronometer - stand alone Barometer - stand alone temp - part of a std instrument package GPS - 2 separate and not inter connected Coms (VHF and SatPh) - separate units Stereo... complete with boom boom upgrade Autodrivers - 2 separate units, with bungy back up. I'm likely to also have - AIS Plotter - so an additional set of GPS, speed, time and compass.

    AIS ... again

Doh, brain fart alert. Of course the unit needs to see a GPS or it doesn't know what to tell people. What sort of power consumption do you think is a safe number to work on IT? Just doing all of that, close as, to make sure what I think I need to generate is enough.

    AIS ... again

Can you get just a simple little transmitter that quietly sits in a dark corner banging out your details? I'm not fussed about seeing what's out there but at times I'd like to make it known I'm out there.
  13. There was a thread on this somewhere but I can't find it. This just in from one of the lads I dive with which maybe of interest to some. Seasickness or Motion Sickness Seasickness is a condition individuals may experience when on a moving platform. It involves a general feeling of illness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. It is also called motion sickness. Passive motions disturb fluid movement within the labyrinth and affects one's sense of balance and equilibrium. It is exaggerated when the brain receives conflicting messages delivered from the eyes, muscles and joint sensors (propri
  14. Ha, fancy that. Just this arvo I was also working out how to tweak my hatch and do the same thing.
  15. digesting............. digesting........... struggling but trying.......
  16. A few $10,000's for bullshit smoke and mirrors is nothing in the big scheme B. If they get their way they will be taking many many $millons worth of public assets and income.
  17. What is DSC? Will it still be of any use in 5 years time? What is SART? Will it still be on any use in 5 yeas time? It's nice to see a 4 letter acronym for a change.
  18. Good point IT. When night flying we allow time for the eyes to adjust before tearing off dowm the concrete. And make sure we don't look at Nav lights or similar.

    AIS ... again

Ah ha, now you say that I do remember seeing a description of how AIS worked and there was limited space, hence that multiplexing thing you mention. I know what you mean about dodgy asian paperwork, you want to see what some do with Certs (supposedly) on our type gear. Rampant dodginess and some is being used in NZ as I write..... by people who do know better. I know that well as well. The funny thing is I've been buying motorbike and boat bits lately and I'm finding most has been cheaper in NZ than it is buying offshore. I think some just think it's cheaper to shop offshore so don't
  20. Just a case of you talking Apples and I'm talking Feijoas IT. Your Apples have space, power and time, my Feijoa has none of those.
  21. OK so why is some AIS illegal in NZ and some not? How can you tell which is which? What's the most likely biggest danger in using one, driving into ship or getting a shitty letter from a little grey man in a polyester suit?
  22. The Vulcan isn't a downstairs gizmo, it's a cockpit gizmo. No point having the Startline/layline and that sort of info downstairs where you can't see it. Having a tablet makes no sense on my boat.

Customs doesn't take anything from exports and a fast decreasing amount of duty off imports. The Pac Islands are known to try and grab anything they can. Two tried to tax me in country when I was being paid back in NZ from a company in Aussie. That's when I was there on aid projects which were being given to the islands. They got told pull ya head in and no tax was paid. But I can see why they would go after cruising yachties, it's not like any of them would try to fudge things to reduce any costs would they Also some of the cruisers will be arrogant SOB's who will be thinking the Is
