Not sure what your question actually is. With a 30 ft boat it is always a call to do the AKL to Noumea or the RNI or any offshore esp in involving the Cook Strait. A great and seaworthy boat with a good crew with the right safety requirements, experience and favourable conditions - no reason why not unless rules exclude. So anticipating that your question might be what’s involved from Cat 2 to Cat 1, the answer is not much. There are some additional crew safety requirements, some additional electronics but the major would be whether you and boat and crew are ready to take on the challenge. The safety at sea, Dr Dave’s course on offshore med emergencies are fun and part of the process. The rest lies with you and crew and boat. One of our friends did AKL to Fiji in an older 30ft boat. They had it hard, but they made it. They were prepared and met the safety regs. Having just been through the CYCA Sydney to Hobart regs, and having done the AKL to Fiji race, Akarana have their heads screwed on. So their rules are reasonable. They don’t require you to have an SSB when a Sat phone is the latest tech. Not sure of their rules on waterline length. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to meeting the rules and then the weather being favourable for a long haul offshore. And no, the requirements can’t possibly be more than the value of your boat unless you haven’t met Cat 3 or Cat 2 at any point. A good crew will be motivated to meet their own costs and even help you out with what’s needed to get everyone there. Biggest considerstion is insurance. Ask for a reasonable contribution of raw costs.

  2. Was more thinking Live Sail Die who SSANZ seem to have a relationship with. Logo on the website. They seem to do a good job. Needs a bit more than enthusiast though as a professional would have remembered to touch base with Boating NZ and get something drafted to them even before the race with results as they fell to meet the deadlines. Josh and Damon were smart and good on them.

  3. Have been thinking more about the media aspects and was initially reluctant to post because the volunteers are well meaning folks and could feel understandably unappreciated.

As participants, we were asked to send info through. But it was a bit hard at times with sailing, eating, napping, logging scheds, downloading the weather which is not the easiest task by Sat phone, guessing whereabouts of other boats and some thinking about tactics. There's dealing with breakages, hitting stuff and avoiding other boats and hazards. There's also staying alive and for some of us, staying married...

There's not much time for anything else. While it is ideal for the participants to provide a little something, a professional media/comms person with experience with sailing would look at the boat positions and do some writing (some of it may have needed to be a little creative :-)). They would interview participants at the stop overs, maybe even send a text while we are all sailing and prompt a reply or a picture when there is reception.

Also, linking with all our yacht clubs and their Facebook sites or websites etc could have been achieved.

With a professional media, PR person behind it all, anything that our good volunteers do to post stuff on Facebook and the website is additional to someone with PR/Comms and sailing experience who would be across it and wordsmith stories to increase engagement. Plus there's less chance of forgetting to acknowledge a great result in any one of the legs etc. There's enough for SSANZ to do keeping an eye on everyone (I can't imagine Jon's blood pressure during this time).

Perhaps a small increase in participation fees or SSANZ investing a bit of coin into professional PR management for a short period of time would more than pay for itself in PR, marketing, brand identification and increasing engagement for the participants and everyone who follows it.

  5. Blink is seriously thinking about the Coastal Classic this year and then the AKL to Welly Race.   Would be great to have some other Welly boats to play with - the mighty Revs, Wedgie, Young Nicholson, Montego Bay III - maybe Gucci will be back from her island travels by then?  A warm up for Guarantee for the two handed?  Some South Island boats too - Satellite, Non Stop, Oldsmobile, Clear Vision?  Would be great to get a whole group going for the delivery there, Coastal and then the go hard and get home race.
