  1. avoid southerlies down the Wairarapa coast and strong NW once around Cape Palliser. If its strong NW when you get to Palliser consider if you need to get to Wellington or you could have a night (or two) in Port Underwood waiting for better conditions. A strong NW will give you a hiding trying to get to Wellington. Underwood is a close reach across the Strait.
  2. so if anyone would like to restore a Askew 28 (make a nice day sailer or overnighter) that has a nice hull but knackered decks get in touch. Prefer someone with a boat trailer that lives outside of Wellington
  3. open the tap or plug on the bottom (carefully with a container underneath) you should be getting diesel out, there should be NO water. Fund the fuel pump, there should be a bleed screw (or bolt) that you can loosen and then manual operate the fuel pump (lever on it) and make sure you have clean diesel pumping through i.e. no air. Of there is air keep pumping. Is your refrigeration turned off? maybe the compressor is putting more load on and not getting enough revs to kick over? Good luck
  4. yep got told about them, took one look at AIS and it was 'yeah, nah wrong crowd " Looking forward to seeing them leave on Friday
  5. I looked back through various posts and the reference to the Bee Barge was originally by a bee keeper apparently in the north island. On his page the closest thing to a barge was a pontoon with a dozen bee hives on it, the name fits but nothing else does..... Today we seem to have had a launch and a yacht (maybe 2), reasonably quite flotilla
  6. hi Wheels, I have seen that post and really hope that they are just blowing smoke....I thought that the 'passengers' were on a barge....why would you and no way that's a four hours trip across. However I might have that wrong and it might be a decent sized vessel. My opinion - treading very close to the 'hire & reward' through advertising, not really knowing those he is taking and looking a lot like a ferry service. At the same time, my feeling is these boats/people are coming across one way or another, so if its a decent boat, right gear and a competent skipper that would make me more c

    Wanaka woes

there can be uplifts of rules and special variations in some areas, often rivers. In that case either the reporter got it wrong or the rule was misquoted. Regional Bylaw can't be inconsistent with the Maritime Rules. Small problem is the Maritime Rule is overdue for an update......

    Electric outboards

Boating NZ had an article looking at a couple of electric vs a petrol in the latest issue
  9. The wellington marinas have taken the stance that there is no external access at Lvl4 If you have concerns contact the marina and they have staff available (some are live aboard. Their rational is they have liveaboards in the marina and that is them isolating the same a everyone else. I guess the comparison is you are isolating at home and people randomly wander through your section or want to use the bathroom (shared marina facilities) Last year there was almost a revolt at one marina where some tenants wanted the liveaboard thrown out so they could drive 30 mins and sit on the
  10. I have a cam cleat on the mast that the spinnaker halyard goes in on the hoist and then when you pull through the clutch in the cockpit it pops it out of the cam cleat.
  11. if it was in Boating NZ there is a fair chance i have it, if the range could be narrowed down a little......
  12. I like the "double glazed" idea, and agree with comments about the slope for keep the water out. That aside and going back to your original drawing, if the air inside is warmer than that outside how much airflow through the holes? It would go through if there is air coming forward to force it. What if the low holes were on the inside and high on the outside? as the warmer air goes in and rises it goes out the top, creating (a very small) thermal draft. Or I could be way over thinking it....
  13. inside of 12nm you would need a consent from Regional Council, outside of that is the Environmental Protection Agency. Any intentionally sunk vessel needs to be cleaned to a high standard. If the boat could fit on a travel lift to get lifted out of the water, in my opinion, it should be disposed of ashore.
  14. If you want more information on swing moorings look at http://www.gw.govt.nz/Swing-moorings/ They are cheaper (sort of ) and that's about all that's good about them, need a dinghy, hassle to get to, maintenance and risk etc. but if it gets you sailing.... There is a Van der stat going quite cheap in Seaview marina at present. Previous owner kept it in goon condition and this one seems to have looked after it
  15. seems to have got a bit lumpy at Gt Barrier https://www.geonet.org.nz/tsunami
  16. This came with my boat, I can't see any likelihood of using it so am making more space. I was told it was serviced and checked for an offshore trip on another boat that didn't go ahead. If you are interested please get in touch, looking for offers. Message me or 0274516155 thanks

  19. NZ will also accept time at sea as part of quarantine, have looked closely enough if there is a difference between shipping and recreational boats but I believe 28 days is the required time for stepping off without quarantine

    Boat Dilemma

  21. we had it on to warm up on the sunday morning this year, it was rather nice I might be on a different boat next year....
  22. yes, sounds exactly like what he got. at that stage the thru hull exhaust was an imported part as they were still setting up manufacturing of their own.
  23. I know someone that has installed on of those. He is a marine engineer and a bit fussy, he is very happy with the unit.
