  1. I have a cracked alternator bracket, its cast and has been welded already. Its been suggested that further welding isn't likely to be that great. Tired the Engine Room but they have a different bracket and don't have any suggestions on this one. Thought I would try here before getting something made...
  2. Zozza, looking at the GoFlex website they seem to be around 9v nominal voltage, is that right? https://goflexsolar.co.nz/ourproducts/

    marine deals

that would be Barton Marine (physical store) and Discount marine is their on-line store
  4. there are annual surveys done around most ports, wharves etc to identify and track and pest species, not sure if they extend to checking anchorages, MPI should be able to answer that
  5. no, that's not correct.
  6. Mana to the sounds is not that bad, I've done in a boat slower than a weta,(see my photo) also had the benefit of a motor when the wind died and easy to adjust sail. If you can get it delivered I would talk to the freight office at StraitNZ (Bluebridge) you need the freight part not the Bluebridge passenger side. Mana cruising club is a good idea too.
  7. If i was ducking the stern of a boat out for a cruise I'd be worried about fishing lines.....
  8. The volunteer boats where used in a non-personal way and so were considered as commercial. Dedicated boats enabled better equipment levels and training which was good. The costs of dedicated boats has continued to increase. The fact most of them have been required to get passenger survey is, in my opinion, ridiculous and I suspect adds more in fees that this latest fee hike has. If they are paying an additional $20,000 I wonder what the base level of fees is..... Good luck to them.

    Steaming Lights

no, those lights are absolutely correct. the discussion was around the option of having an allround white at the masthead for anchor or steaming & Stern. You still need a stern light for when you are sailing.

    NRC on fan worm

sometime that happens because there is a lack of nationwide directive and at a local level "doing nothing" is not considered a reasonable option. For anything in relation to ships, big or small, moving around the country its usually not a good approach.....
  11. Interested to hear how that works out,I have looked at that site before and it seems quite dated...
  12. think that only works if its commercial or you have already registered for a MMSI, if you have just got a bog standard CG callsign don't think you will find it there

    What is this for?

if its quite a short one, i thought they could be used when the pole was right forward on the forestay. The Whisker pole went out at right angles on the mast to give the guy some angle on the main pole
  14. Interesting idea but I think unlikely, they tend to have much higher bow and taller bridge for spotting, pretty slow for a chaser too
  15. or look at February onwards, weather better then.
  16. Great idea, just bear in mind that summer can be a bit later down this way, from about Christmas onwards, usually anyway...
  17. if you can cope with it not being on paper, most of it is now in an app https://www.cruiseguide.co.nz/
  18. Have a look at the LINZ website, they have an on-line converter and more datums than any normal person would know what to do with. At the same time talk to them as they might be able to make intelligent guess about which one you should use
  19. At this stage it seems few units can see the weather data transmitted by AIS, and that includes Class A. Like being able to AtoN this will come to more units over time I suspect.
  20. the tonnage fee, if based on measurement, is likely to be a volume measurement rather than the displacement. Roughly the cargo carrying volume of the boat based on the number of French wine barrel's you could cram into it
  21. if you want to view it as a suicide attempt and think that is ok, then yes you may have a point. I suspect that wasn't his plan as there must be easier ways.... The 'report' came from several non-government types that are well acquainted with yachts and the sea and it too him about 4 hours to sail out of Evans bay in a 12 knot northerly from memory. He may not have been able to call for help but that does't preclude a search being started. There were many people involved who, I suspect, would not have slept well had he disappeared never to be seen again. I'm not commenting on the
  22. that particular boat was looking a lot worse than that when in Wellington, and I am guessing his sailing ability (read that as " knowing that the halyard has to be tight") improved somewhat during his time sailing around Wellington harbour. and the reality at the time was he was likely to head out into cook strait to become the target of a Search & Rescue mission.
  23. Well done to the Dickson's, Hamish first (in his family's 30ish year old boat) and his father 2nd.
