  1. Yes Wheels, the crimping tools for the ferrules selling for around $350. I like the way they seal off the wire ends and support the terminal wiring at the stress point area
  2. I like these ferrule terminal end type of crimps, I haven't seen them in NZ though
  3. One unusual thing I have found when staying in Port Charles is a very strong catabatic wind coming off the higher land that can be less enjoyable in the evening
  4. Hi CD, depending on the weather, of course, Mayor Island is amazing. SE bay can cut up if there is SE winds but around the corner is NW and Honeymoon Bay as an alternative. The water is crystal clear and lots of areas to snorkel and fish, landing on the island is interesting with a walk that circumnavigates the island (5-6 hr) with a koha ($5 maybe) to be paid if you want to do this. Further on is Whangamata which has a marina that is shallow to enter but if there is no swell anchorage areas are in the southern corner or in the deeper water inshore of the islands. Next is Slipper Is. whe
  5. That day will be worth celebrating Grant, hopefully a smooth run from now on! Go the Lizard!
  6. What I like about Penrite is it's online oil selection tool, you specify the vehicle and it defines the correct premium oil and then suitable alternatives. The range is very specific and applies to Australian and NZ models. This tool doesn't apply to marine units unfortunately.
  7. Does anyone have one of these in any condition?
  8. Cation has a nice system for the halyard and the squaretop, check out the BoatingNZ video. This may not be applicable for you though!
  9. I used a Meguiars restore product from Repco that did a good job, cheers!
  10. Thanks for the info, I will see how it goes. My judgement is that it's not ready for replacement yet, maybe in a couple of years as it has scratching from folded up with the dodger folder down.
  11. Who has some good tips and products for cleaning dodger clears apart from replacing them, mine are getting a bit hard to see clearly through them, a few scratches but not fogged up.
  12. If the stack pack is made with parallel sides they can be rolled and clipped neatly away under the sail, with the lazy jacks secured under the boom fitting horns
  13. They have unloaded the stern to get access to the rudder by the looks of it
  14. The image in the article looks like a microchip with bling, that makes me a bit dubious as batteries tend to have fewer connections, or at least in series. May be parallel on a circuit board?

    B&G gear

IT is a specialist, try him
  16. Yes, the inevitable system replacement is on the cards. I like the pricing of the B&G these days and it seems that the quality and reliability has been retained with the budget range.
  17. I connected the unit up and used a fan to spin the impellor. Seemed to respond to speed and direction but unsure of the quality of the signal. Periodically there is a packet of pulses that come through, one is direction and the other speed. Still a bit of playing to be done.
  18. If the clunk occurred only in neutral then it could be engaging gear spasmodically due to incorrect adjustment of selector or similar, the heat present could induce the selection if it was slightly off. When it clunks can you move just the gear selector arm slightly one way or another to see if the clunk goes away? But if it makes the noise when drive is engaged makes this less viable!! Does it do it both in reverse or forward? Can you isolate the clunk to either the motor or saildrive? I have read about the oil type change for earlier saildrive models, has the oil been changed? Was it the
  19. Thanks Dave, it is probably a trip to nowhere trying to keep the system going as something else will fail! What was surprising was the coating of dust and dirt on the unit, a total black-out especially with it being at the top of the mast and inside a fairly sealed unit, it is a wired unit. Maybe there is some ionisation that attracts the dust?? It cleaned up well though.
  20. After some time I opened up the sensor to find it full of dirt and dust, covering the opto-sensors and partially covering the opto-ball?? What an amazing idea I reckon. I will try to test is with oscilloscope, the pulse frequency is the speed and the pulse length is the direction, all on 2 wires. Results to come!
  21. Here was some good info: nx2_service manual.pdf
  22. Hi KJ, I didn't ask them to repair it but that may have been a good option as the bearings were all OK. They didn't offer to repair it either but I will check it out when I get the old unit as I work with some electronic people and have access to some test gear. I hope the new unit will offer a few more years of service ahead.
  23. Over the weekend I removed the wind transducer from it's base and took it to the local Garmin agent who set up a bus network to check it with a new one. It produced a 0 knot signal when compared to a new unit. So I've ordered a new transducer as mentioned in previous posts. It wasn't straightforward testing of the output like a normal transducer but luckily had a test rig to try it out.
  24. I had some nice wet weather gear but the zips and appendages were metallic and corroded quite badly
  25. The unit is a wired unit straight into the bus. I would like to hear how Kiwijon gets on, weather not the best at present
