  1. We did a bit of an investigation last year and found that there are really only 2 reasons to change oil, excessive contaminants and worn out additives. Hence we get our oil analysed 6 monthly and change as required on our fleet of backup generators (which all run at 1500rpm all the time). We had a new genset installed recently that the enigineers had over speced and was running with too little load. We had to install load banks to stress the engine enough to bed in properly. It was a pretty interesting exercise. Apparetly on of the worst things you can to to a diesel is run it with little
  2. Yea. Redistributing the loads would have cured the symptom but not the cause. I hope it was sorted cuz a dodgy neutral can kill.
  3. Did you get the sparky to check your main neutral connection? If he didnt, dont use him again and find someone else to have a look at it. It sounds like there is a dodgy neutral to me. Believe it or not, the main earth peg does bugger all in most installations.
  4. We are very happy with our mason supreme. I think most anchors of this general design are the go. I dive on my anchor from time to time and it seems to always dig in well. Sometimes all i can see is the roll bar!
  5. We have a st4000 on our boat. Had a pretty spotty run with it initially, but I resoldered the motor connections and upgraded the factory plug/socket and it works pretty well now. Before doing that it had very little pushing power and stalled all the time. It cant handle a full rudder load (Elliott 10.5) but does a good enough job in most conditions and hasn't played up since.
  6. Its probably a bit late but we are here and i could pick you up/drop you off at your boat if you want?
  7. Makita drills aint what they used to be. A while back they were the best battery drill you can buy but not anymore imo. A mate was on his third one recently when the warranty ran out and it died again shortly after. Ive abused ryobi gear for years and imo they are the best value tools for tradies. They're definitely not as grunty as the Milwaukee/makita/hitachi drills but they are so much cheaper and seem to last pretty well. I got 3 years out of mine drilling holes in steel and 20mm holes in old rimu. When it broke i spent about $100 on a new one. Thats good value imo. As for bos
  8. So this week I sailed pork chop up from tauranga amd the mrs was going to drive up to meet me here for our week sailing holiday. After meeting wifey in westhaven and loading up the boat I noticed that we were short one of our gear boxes. The kids had their stuff but the mrs had left all of her spare clothes in tauranga! Thankfully a quick trip to the warehouse got her sorted. Im just stoked we hadnt left yet.
  9. Its all good Veladare. It makes for a good story and most importantly no one got hurt and the boat is in 1 piece.
  10. We just bought the zeus and love it. Wouldnt go touchscreen only after our issues with the old mfd during the auckland tga race.
  11. Great weekend here. We had the Cuvier island race with TYPBC where we couldn't quite beat Truxton to the finish. Apart from a short period where the wind died out it was champagne sailing. We'll get you next time Willow! After the race I dropped the crew off at Whitianga and cruised over to Mayor. I had amazing vis at the marine reserve for snorkelling, and a beut walk to the lake on monday for a swim. What a way to see the summer off!
  12. I have been going through a similar issue myself. I started asking why isn't this working, and by the end of my fault finding I was asking how the hell did this ever work. I started with a micro sized aerial at the top of the mast, went down to a improperly sealed join that was full of water, next stop was the stupid cheap amfm/vhf splitter, and to top it all off the middle core of the plug into the radio hadn't been crimped or soldered in (someone had folded it over itself a few times and shoved it in the back of the plug!). Also FYI pacific aerials don't do custom aerials anymore, I went
  13. Fair enough. If in doubt don't do it I suppose. I don't see myself as any less capable than the type of guy who will be paid to replace batteries for a living. Why send $200 down the drain for no real benefit? I think that he might even be more likely to be suffering from mondayitis, friday afternoon effect, etc and screw something up.
  14. No idea. Probably a lithium of some description. Funny about the label maker sticker. That was my plan as well
  15. Yea. We have a similar situation at work. 200 for the approved battery replacement or 10 diy with no issues yet. I will certaintly be looking to replace the epirb battery myself when the time comes.
  16. Good to know its not just us. We did our first Chinese gybe ever few months ago. Had the masthead kite up in what turned into gusting 25 by pilot bay. A particularly big gust coincided with a moments inattention on the helmsmans part and next thing we were on our side. Not the most pleasant experience but we have done 14 knots in flat water with a kite up which was pretty awesome.
  17. If I can convince one of the other owners to come I would like to do the not so hard arse 100nm course. We had a blast last year!
  18. Ha. I had it from a friend that it was a great place to take kids and that his kids used to love it. No bites thankfully but looks like that will be a one off visit. My wife's seasickness has been severly limiting but we have managed to get to motuketekete for a chillaxed swim and then yesterday went to mansion house bay for an explore. We even managed to drop off the 3yo and wife and had a nice sail with the 3 older kids around motuora. For one of them it was their first time sailing which was a bit of a laugh. He mept asking if we were going to tip right over With the winds fore
  19. Just had our first day here. What a cool place. After grabbing the boat from addem at sandspit (a very unfriendly marina imo) we shot over to martins bay to sort out the campground with the mrs. I managed to con a mate into coming with his grandson and had another young fulla join us. Its been great having all the kids and they have been getting on well. With the boring stuff out of the way we decided to cruise over to beehive island for a nosy. The kids were dreaming up extreme survival island scenarios while we were just looking forward to getting them off the boat. They got scratched up
  20. Cheers. Ive never been much of a fisherman so my rig is a freedivers 120 carbon speargun and i guess that makes me the bait!
