If you mean Wide Open Throttle, ah no. Try doing that in an overpowered racing car that shouldn't be on the roads anyway and is in the hands of an idiot. How many times have we seen these fools spin out? Damage and breaking distance multiply geometrically, a bit like volume and length of a boat, and not many drivers know this simple fact of physics.

Wow someone got triggered. That might qualify as the greatest non sequitur in Crew history.
No one is forcing anyone to do anything. But how about YNZ using our fees to aggressively get into these communities and try to build involvement? I'd consider that a better use of my money than cherry picking a few kids to try and win a medal.

The Generator/Charger in the Pic is in the Oz outback.

I can't remember how I came across this, but when it first appeared a few years back, I made a comment about it. I ended up in a...errrr...."discussion" about the thing. Some guy involved could not get his head around how silly this idea was. He had a silly notion that even though there was this huge Generator running chewing up Diesel, He believed that fact was off set by the EV. I even wrote out mathmatical examples proving how it was not. In the end, instead of conceding to the Maths, he just applied some other lame excuse and false logic, so I gave up. I can't remember the size now, but the Diesel engine in the Gen is quite a serious one.
By the way, the Rail Ferries either have, or are talking of providing EV charging on board so Vehicles can be charged during a crossing. Unless someone has finally woken up to the insane stupidity of providing Electricity by means of burning Fuel on a Ship.

The Market is a pretty good way of efficiently allocating resources to their most productive uses, most people who think its not fair are complaining they are not getting something of value for free.
It is not very good at allocating cost of environmental harm, what used to be known as pollution or exploitation, to its sources without government intervention.
Many businesses are profitable only because they can pass  lot of their true cost onto the public, either not paying for the harm they do or for the resources they consume. The Government needs to price these things and charge it to the business.
I believe the free market is still the best way to set the general direction of business or production or "The Economy" but the Government needs to monitor and ensure costs are also allocated appropriately.
I don't see much evidence that letting the government decide on the allocation of all resources based on what it thinks is best, "picking winners", has ever turned out to be a good idea in the long term. The market also purchases the services of the government to regulate it, if the price is too high or the service no good it tends to get sorted one way or another.

Anyone keen to join? Im looking for a dive buddy.
Plan is 2x dives on air to max 30m. This is a rec dive with minimum penetration (if any). We will be anchored nearby and will cruise over in the dinghy. Suitable for reasonably experienced/qualified divers only due to depth.
    Cheers

I reckon that's how it should be - freedive only, and then the deeper beds seed the shallower beds. For now banning dredging is a good start.

We could say the same thing about paua, is it fair that the only divers who can get them are the ones who can hold their breath? If you can afford a boat you can afford to buy some scallops.
Seafood gathering is a privilege and one that needs to be enjoyed sustainably. That at least as valid for the commercial crews/customary fishers too IMO.

If you can't dive, you don't get scollies... I don't get the issue? There is a whole lot more effort involved in diving, and very little impact. More effort means less scollies being taken, which I believe is a good thing.

NZ is voted to be the best at everything by randoms about every 10 minutes.
The facts are many other countries have had less deaths without a world leading amount of borrowing and damage to the economy. Some of those countries are less then 1mm from China and don't have 1000km wide moats. but then they have PM's who govern for their country not as a job interview for the UN.
Besides everyone knows Helen Clarke is still pulling the strings.
Regalvanise your chain.... NZ was voted the worst country to to that in but it was voted the best to be able to but new stuff Coincidently i was pricing up a bit of a chain game changer due in a few weeks and when considering the price I did bring re-galvanising costs in as a competitor. Still not quite sure what to do there, make it better then regalvanising and in doing so create waste or lift the price so used gets used until it's worn out rather than 'just doesn't look pretty any more', which is why quite a few people buy new. They tend to be mostly just JA's rich union mates, the ones that take money from the poor working class to fund their and the labour partys senior members rather luxurious life styles. Or the becoming even more uber rich literally by the minute property owners JA is throwing money at to ensure inequality grows just as fast.
Shame about all those living in poverty, under bridges and so on, now she has got their vote she's cast them aside as unworthy of her consideration.

    This.  Exactly.
However, they do get working for families tax credits and probably accomodation supplement.  You would think that addresses it all eh?
    Nope.
The accomodation supplement doesn't increase proportional to rental market changes.  Consequently it slowly falls behind.  In any case, the effect of it is to increase rents and make property more expensive.  It's a hugely regressive and destructive payment.
Since they are renting, they are constantly at the whim of the landlord.  The rent goes  up and they have little or no bargaining power in that.  There only option is to move which is a highly disruptive and expensive exercise.  The property gets sold, they have to move.  Often to a different area, meaning different schools and increased additional cost.
W4F payments help, there is no doubt.  But the reality of teenagers is that they consume dollars ferociously.  The cost to feed a male teen is calculated as about 1.2 X that of an adult male.
I'm time rich, have access to easy transport and other resources and I budget main meals for us at about 8 dollars each ingredient cost.  This is using fresh seasonal produce, mid level lean protein, a variety of carbs.  Let's say I'm extravagant and it can be done for 20% less, that is still about 6.50 per person, so the doctors hypothetical family needs to spend over 40 dollars a meal to feed themselves a balanced diet.  Their food only cost has to be more than 300 a week.
It's a grinding, endless existance that is made worse by the fact that our economic policy settings require it.  It's the market at work.

Personal choice.  This is about more than just obesity. This hits at health measures to curb obesity, it means they consider drug addiction also a personal choice, it puts the blame for poverty firmly on those in poverty. It appeals to National's core voters who are, to be honest, often out of touch with reality. The first cry i hear from the right is that "they should have thought a bit more before having kids" which is not only post fact, but verging on invasion of privacy at the least, and at the worst on a level of authoritarian interference in private lives that we as a society should roundly shun. People in poverty have poorer access to reproductive health - so you gonna tell them not to have sex? Often, religious groups (including those on the far right) champion the policy of having more kids, and catholics are not supposed to use birth control.
Like poverty is a personal choice also?
I propose an exercise. Draw up a realistic budget for a family of six, including two teenagers. Mum n Dad working minimum wage. Living and working in Auckland, Include rent, transport, clothing, food, electricity and all the other things. Make some assumptions about where the family lives, and where the parents work. Also consider things like no freezer, because there's nowhere to put one / no money to buy one. etc.
Now show me how they can get enough calories without buying low quality processed food. Remember, fruit and veggies are low on calories compared to potato chips.
And show me how they can spend enough quality time with their kids.
    I'm serious.
I challenged someone to this about a year ago, and their answer was that mum should be working 60h a week and Dad 80h... They were serious, they thought that that was a legitimate answer - not sure who was supposed to look after the kids... or when the parents were supposed to sleep.

Here are some numbers to get you started. You guys can fill in the rest.
    He's a construction labourer getting $25/h, 40h a week. 790.33 a week after PAYE and kiwisaver.
She's an office cleaner working 30h a week on minimum, 18.90 an hour. 471.73 a week as above.
So he's driving to Long Bay everyday to work on houses being built there: 80km a day, 400km week
She's driving to the city 40km a day, 200km a week. Their schedules don't allow them to share a vehicle - or evenings.

Rent: 580 a week in Manurewa
    640 left ---
    Cars and petrol ?? let's say an old corolla ('95, 6.5L per 100km - 30 bucks a week) and a hiace van (mid 90s diesel, 8.6l/100km, $42+$30.4RUC). 540 left. Maintenance? Depreciation?
    Electricity ?? 23kWh per day at 28c per unit + daily connection (30c) = 47 per week. 493 left...

the idea that extremists of the left + right share more in common with each other than they do with the centre is pretty widely held.....imho not in what they say but far more importantly in what they do............like shoot their own moderates for not being 'pure' enough
In political science and popular discourse,[1] the horseshoe theory asserts that the far-left and the far-right, rather than being at opposite and opposing ends of a linear political continuum, closely resemble one another, analogous to the way that the opposite ends of a horseshoe are close together.
As the political horseshoe theory attributed to Jean-Pierre Faye highlights, if we travel far-left enough, we find the very same sneering, nasty and reckless bully-boy tactics used by the far-right. The two extremes of the political spectrum end up meeting like a horseshoe, at the top, which to my mind symbolizes totalitarian control from above.
In their quest for ideological purity, Stalin and Hitler had more in common than modern neo-Nazis and far-left agitators would care to admit.

In our unicamaral system, a single-party majority is not a great thing, a supermajority even worse.  Many still see the compromise involved in a proportional representation system as a weakness, but in reality its not.  Since MMP we have had well moderated and stable government.  Prior to MMP we had wild swings of direction.
It has happened more and more that the house votes cohesively.  With obvious and understandable exceptions most parliamentary business is now completed with very little "sturm und drang".
Once we lose the last vestiges of FPP that remains in people's heads (the largest party block must lead by default, small parties are holding govt to ransom, etc etc) our government will be freed from the faux-combative drama and will be able to function in the overall best interests of the country.
In that environment, its worth having the ACTs, Greens, United Futures, TOPs, etc.  They provide valid alternative points of view.  If they are waaaaay wide of the mark, the larger parties can (and do) collectively use their voting size to negate the madness.

    Wed Oct 07 2020
At 1610 I crossed my outbound track, surging into Matiatia on a brisk Southwest wind. I rounded up in the lee of the headland, furling the genoa and dropped the main for the last time. After over a month at sea I felt like an albatross folding it wings as it returns to the land from its soaring across the boundless oceans.
I have sailed two and a half thousand miles around New Zealand, through triumphs and disasters, challenges great and small, through happiness and despair. Through every emotion really. The hardest part has been dealing with myself, with the little mind that wants to give up or complain or be lazy or just feel sorry for itself. Out there alone I have passed through my own cold stormy nights but always I seem to manage to come through those into the glowing sunrise of a new day and I feel the better for the experience, cleansed in some way by the wind and the salt spray.
On the dock, as I glide in on the wind, finally engineless simply because I have run out of fuel, are my dear friends and family. They come to help and share in what is for me a very moving moment. Their kindness and care touches me deeply.
All these posts have been painstakingly tapped out, letter by letter with one finger, on the tiny keyboard on my phone, sometimes in very trying situations. It has been, in some way, a conversation I have been having with you. I had no one else to talk to.
So thank you if you read them, and thank you if you helped out by supporting the restoration of the Kate. She’s a fine old ship.
    I am home now.

As it is now we have a distinct possibility we could end up single party and one chocker with ideology (some really fuitloop grade sh*t) but not much experiance at being you or me or the organisations that keep NZ going dispite the government.
As I said 3 years ago, go vote like the lemmings you are but don't expect things to get better because if it.
Was I right? Oh hell yes. Next to f*ck all has got better but a sh*t load has got worse.

Actually I see NZ being in the most danger of a Lab/Green Govt. The Labs are a little fruity but still reasonably pragmatic, the Greens are just fruitloop grade muppets and f**king dangerous ones. So I predict a Lab/Green Govt would enact some nasty sh*t including removing many freedoms and loading up some huge costs, Jacinda and the Labour party will blame them all on the Greens who are that bloody stupid they will just smile inanely and not see the wheels of the bus coming up fast behind them.
But then the Akl Central poll must have caused so discussions in the assorted war rooms. The game seems to have changed direction there very quickly. No idea why but reports do suggest the Labour lady is a patronising dickhead, if that's right then it maybe a seat only thing not a nationwide swing of any sort.

Ashley Bloomfield, reluctant to criticise either his political masters or health officials, on Monday said there was a “dissonance” between Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s expectation and what was actually happening on the ground.
    ...
Ardern on Thursday, at a press conference with Bloomfield, gave assurances workers at quarantine facilities were being tested weekly.
“If you work outside of that [quarantine facilities], it’s a slightly longer rotation but still frequent,” she said.
But it appears this was not correct. Ardern on Monday confirmed the testing wasn’t happening as Cabinet expected.
“We made a Cabinet decision that we should have weekly testing at that facility ... what it appears was happening is that there was testing on a weekly basis, but at this stage I cannot confirm that every single staff member on a weekly [roster] was being picked up,” she said.
A total 130 of the staff at the Jet Park hotel, a quarantine facility in south Auckland, have been tested for Covid-19 this month – amounting to 57 per cent of the workers at the facility.
