Trying to stay warm!!!! Seriously we have loads of activities lined up with the locals - a visit to the school, as well as helping the kids build and race cardboard boats, prizegiving and BBQ at the Community Centre (did someone mention blue cod and crayfish???) The local garage has offered up cars for us all to use to see a bit more of the island, as well as the Krakatoa crew rented electric bikes to explore for a few hours. A few sail repairs are required so Skinner the sailmaker is busy with that and Bart from NZ Rigging arrives shortly to start more work. Some of the race ma

So we have Titanium, Motorboat 11, Krakatoa, Coppelia and Galeforce all now safely moored in the bay with Arbitare and Katana still to come. Competitors have been great so far and have all finished in daylight ... so far. And yes it is freezing down here - our SSANZ Baltic PFD jackets are coming in very handy to keep that cold wind out. Now it's time for the prod replacement and sail repairs to start.

We're in the final countdown with less than a week to go now. Safety inspections, race briefing and crew farewell all happening this week then race starts from Westhaven tower 1400 hrs Saturday. Well the countdown is now on for the 7 boats entered in the 2019 SSANZ Round New Zealand race. Race start is Saturday February 16 and hopefully by now the to-do lists for the boats are getting smaller as preparations are well under way. Competitors in this the third edition of RNZ are: Krakatoa, Pogo 40 Gale Force, Elliott 1050 Coppelia, Farr 38 Katana, Sunfast 3600 Arbitare, Farr 38 Motorboat 11, Elliott 10.5 Titanium, Thompson 38 In the crews we have brother versus brother - Sam Tucker on Gale Force, and Josh Tucker on Motorboat 11 as well as the Elliott 10.5 versus Elliott 1

Way way back in the day the very first Easterly 30 did the 1978 Solo Tasman but was rolled, dismasted and abandoned by skipper John Jury after Tropical Cyclone Hal. It was salvaged and still lives on in Oz I believe. Tough boats!

Meanwhile in a different part of the world recently I happened to take a snap of a racy looking boat heading out for a sail from Sausalito, California. When I made it back home I showed it to He-who-knows-more-about-boats, who agreed with me that it looks very "Elliot-iish" and a search using the Sail number of the YNZ site confirms it is indeed an Elliot 1050 Basic Instinct. Anyone know anything about how it's in the States?

Melbourne Osaka had multiple race starts over a number of days, I guess in the hope that they all reach the finish line at a similar time. An unscheduled, race management dictated pit stop to escape Cyclone Iris may impact that though...
