  1. That's a good suggestion to contact Alan Wright. Anyone know his email ? It's a swing board, not a daggerboard pulling up into an enclosed case that sits below the floor boards. Lead ballast either side of case.Doesn't seem to be water filled.
  2. Thanks for replys. This Pacer plate is an aerofoiled steel fabrication. It has rusted / rotted out bottom half of leading edge exposing hollow interior. Have to raise boat up off trailer to drop plate for pics etc. Thinking is that it will be a good idea to try and do job in one hit so if another plate is around we can just slot it in. Prime objective is to avoid having to get a new one made & associated expense.Cheers
  3. The steel centreboard has to be replaced. Anyone got one ? Would a Catalina board do ? Or any other ideas as we can see big expense if a new one has to be built....thanks
  4. So the rumour that it will be a consequence of Donald Trump being elected President is untrue ?
  5. It's the social engineering experiment that really started gaining momentum under Helen.Seeing how far you can push an isolated community (NZ) how quickly. Helen loaded the judiciary,Local Govt and Govt bureaucracy with sycncophants and this penalty regime is the outcome. Lifejackets BS is symptomatic of nanny state do as you're told or else. And of course there are always people queueing up to kick other people around. Collaborators,Gestapo, Traffic cops,Harbourmasters and staff all have that same type of personalty and the ability to threaten draconian penalty is part and parcel of their pow
  6. Wow....one tongue in cheek comment turned the thread upside down. Oh well !Watching TV last night and saw the Chch cafes trying to discourage outside smoking. Now that's something the Regional Councils should really focus on instead of lifejackets. From the stats its clear that not that many people drown in boats. Seems many drown in cars ? Others die from hypothermia but get classed as a drowning. Lifejackets won't help there But theres no doubt that smoking kills . Lots ! R C's could help the public health by enforcing the Clean Air provisions they are responsible for. If they chose. Hope th
  7. Hope springs eternal ScottiE. Follow the money.....out of Westhaven and HMB to any sheltered anchorage on those days and BINGO.There will be the Pointy Heads complete with cap, badge, clipboard, ticket book and overseas accent !
  8. As you would expect this report doesn't tell the whole story that would define that wholesale enforcement of life jacket wearing with accompanying penalties would have made any difference. My guess from these stats is mot much ! And it doesn't differentiate death by hypothermia that causes the drowning either. The more you look at it this compulsory lifejacket thing is a crock for bureaucrats fundraising. The only bit that affects most on this forum is in tenders commuting to other boats / shore. YNZ could help here too but I doubt it.Why would they go out for Joe Blow Average .?
  9. Good facts there KM. But forget the facts it's perceptions that count in any bureaucracy. And those perceptions can be created by that bureaucracy. Most 'drownings' are in fact death from hypothermia and lifejackets don't stop that.Follow the money !
  10. Well, go find the 12ft tinny and leave you alone in your inflatable. Likely that the load of people in the tinny will die of hypothermia in their lifejackets anyway. This is more about power and control over todays society. And all about revenue raising in the future. Pointy headed bureaucrats with uniform, clipboard and ticket books just can't help themselves. Talk about the attitude test !!!!!! good advice on how to work the system
  11. Like the speed tax this new lifejacket legislation will be used to raise money. How it will go is softly softly then warnings then tickets. And to prevent false names boats will be registered and skippers licensed. In Oz that's how it goes and fees will start at about $100 and ratchet up from there.Quickly ! The enforcement has to be paid for. New swimming pool legislation requires 3 yr inspections. These won't be free. Estimated to save 6 lives every 10 yrs. Maybe ,maybe not.But this is the 'logic' the bureaucracy will use on lifejackets. They'll say any figure which doesn't have to be proved.
  12. We have had solar water heating for 10 years.Had some issues with panel (2 replacements on Wty) and one circulating pump. Original cost was about $5000 on a 2yr interest free deal. We manage it by turning off power ,showering in mornings. Reckon break even was at 8 yrs so it's not all its cracked up to be and we are locked in now if anything else goes wrong because of cost of changing back. Would we do it again. Probably yes. New units much better I assume.
  13. Knot Me has it in one. This Health & Safety thing has gone silly. It's not about H & S so much as control. Next up is boat rego and licensing to save us from ourselves. (Read fundraising and job creation ) Add in the do gooders and the nosey parkers and you have this situation. There is a case of a yacht that left harbour and was never seen again. Likely scenario was a suicide but absolutely no publicity. With nothing to be gained by the establishment nothing was ever said. On passage on the coast we make no reports and turn radio off. The gabble is nonsensical. Leave types like this gu
  14. Good advice there. Have you considered Young 43 / Farr 1220 type ? They sail very well. No,I don't have one for sale !
  15. Good summary of the situation thanks. We must break the 'law' every time we leave harbour.First coastal passage 1961. Didn't realise the danger obviously and must have had extraordinary 'luck' during ensuing 55years.Ocean passages too !Some of them without an inflatable liferaft,GPS,bleeper, vhf etc. Had to learn too,as this chap has to do.As an adventurer he'll figure it out and the gear they made him get won't be of any assistance there. All it does is make it easy for him to call for help instead of making him self reliant and responsible. Nanny state in top gear ably assisted by law and po
  16. How unusual. A dodgy deal involving a national authority and a Council. If you need to know what's going on just follow the money. In anything !
  17. Me too ! YNZ is the obvious vehicle but unfortunately the current regime seems to be compliant ,agreeable and work within the system . Shame. Sailing's problem is there are not enough of us and sailing is seen as a rich boys pastime. We won't generate much media / public sympathy. Like lifejackets, boat cleaning, ridiculous safety gear regulations. Civil disobedience is a first line along with protest.I'll bet the new Cat.1,2 & 3 will all but debar most of us from racing outside a harbour. Most of this gear is superfluous nonsense taking away personal responsibility.I remember a briefing for
  18. Classic nanny state !Provided you don't ask for help it's an individual's right to fall off mountains, jump out of airplanes with parachutes that don't open go to sea and come to grief and so on.This control is all part of a masterplan for a compliant obedient non thinking population. It's working !The bureaucracy knows best. Even the pollies have handed over to them. Licensing is next probably using examples like this guy as one of the reasons. In Oz you MUST report leaving harbour and report back in harbour. If you don't you can be prosecuted. Boat rego around $300 for 30' plus you MUST have d
  19. No problem Fish. Been swimming in much more crowded bays than your effluent can produce for many years. No turds or guiness / curry floaters as you so succinctly put it. That's because it's well macerated / diluted but you perhaps don't want to see this through your emotional eyes. BTW we even have 'enjoyed" the company of the Piedy boys over the years with their bucket & chuck it arrangements.Their ghetto blasters were the only problem my wife and kids experienced
  20. Yes that's correct Steve. The dilution effect of millions of cubes of saltwater on a toilet discharge is so great it is virtually impossible to measure. The islanders have been using their lagoons for their waste since time began. This phobia about boat discharge is more about appearances than health issue. And power and control by Regional Councils justifying their expensive existences
  21. Catalina is an Alan Wright design .Good boats. Stick with glass boats. The decks/cabin tops wear much better and the hull is not prone to a lot of maintenance compared to wood / glassed. However buy a glass boat that has been looked after....as has been said ,don't buy one that needs doing up. It will cost a lot more than paying a little extra for a good boat.
  22. Surprised no one has suggested a Gazelle. Mk 2 were core glass and quite light. They are a great cruiser / racer with heaps of room.25 ' long well built and seem to sell around the $$$ you are looking at. R780 good boat too.. Trojan is OK.....
