Well it turns out your right, Night sailing is awesome! Three quarters of the way around Waiheke right now (5am) got lucky no rain yet. i think everyone is safe in bed no boats out so far.

Is sailing at night with no moon as dark as one would assume? Can you make out islands etc? Add rain is it a horrible experience pounding into completely unseen waves, following a GPS screen like sailing on a video game? Or is that being a little dramatic? Trying to decide on a night sail or stay home and watch the rugby???

You make some excellent points KM Do you think a parachute first and then an LED would qualify as crazy? Capture attention with parachute, hopefully they turn the VHF on, and use LED hoping they are looking in direction of parachute to see where it came from?

" You have yet to attract my attention." Will a handheld flare do it? Or do I need to shoot a parachute past your head? I agree with what you are saying in that the local craft are best placed for immediate assistance, but I think if my boat sinks 300m away and they don't act, they may aswell be considered as being on the moon.

I bought a flare pack today it has 2 smoke,2 handheld and a parachute. I have a trailer sailer and haven't ever raced, so racing aside my question is: Do I really need a flare pack? I like the idea of the LED flare instead. Keeping in mind I have a VHF, waterproof PLB, cell phone in a life proof case,waterproof handheld VHF, GPS & hand held GPS. So I pretty much now where I am,and have communication options. Even The wife can track my phone (it's scary how accurate it is) What's everyone's opinions? Trade the flares for one LED or keep flares instead (budget doesn't allo

Wow that was a quick reply! Alan said, "Some Catalina's were fitted out differently to suit owners specific requirements. An entry bulkhead and door to the frd berths was not common but a hull ring frame or partial bulkhead is essential in way of the mast. Cheers, Alan Wright" I told the wife it will be easier to get a bigger boat, That Noelex 30 on trade me looks nice.......

oe That's a Catalina 22, they are American. The Catalina 7 is designed by Alan Wright, although they do look similar and both have a big pop top they are not the same boat.

Thanks for all the replies, yes the picture is the same as mine. It sounds like a bad idea to remove any of it, I will email Alan just to confirm. It's not a deck head beam as such, it's the channel for the pop top (the entire cabin top lifts up) I guess the inherent strength of the channel acts as a beam. Because of the pop top I think the bulkhead might be even more important. I'll let you know what I find out.

I need some advice, Can I remove the bulkhead that seperates the froward V berth from the cabin? Sorry no photo, The boat is a Catalina 7 trailer sailer. It has a door that can be closed effectively sealing off the V berth. We don't use the door. My wife finds the space a little claustrophobic, she wants the wall taken away to open up the space. I know the post under the mast is essential but I'm thinking the rest of the partition is for privacy only?? The obvious answer is to buy a 50 catamaran, working on that (one lotto ticket at a time).
