There are more "accidental" events caused by modern methods of navigation than ever before, insufficient training, understanding, and reliance on a screen rather than No. 1 eyeball the main reasons. Just look at the US Navy if in doubt, or maybe the Rena. There was a time back in the day when you stood off, hove to, or tacked out to sea if / when in doubt of your position. Between auto pilots and electronic navigation etc. we are actually no longer in charge.

Slight thread drift, but I ordered a load of stuff from Torpedo 7 over the lockdown. They were heavily advertising click and collect. Couldn't get any of it. 3 weeks later now, I've cancelled the orders. Did click and collect with two different local shops. One confirmed the order was ready within 15 mins of me placing it, the other had the stuff ready same day, and would have delivered it that evening if I wanted them to. Both local shops have done returns and credits for things that weren't quite right. In contrast, Torpedo 7 have melted down completely, they are now emailing saying don't contact us about your order, don't even bother trying to phone us, etc. Upon phoning, the wait time is about 30 mins, I still have to wait 3-5 days for my refund, and trying to exchange anything was like banging your head against a wall. Not that I could exchange anything, cause I couldn't collect anything to exchange it.
Short story, I will now happily support the little guy local shops, and pay a few dollars extra to do so. I will never buy anything from T 7 again. They are still advertising heavily and sending me daily promo emails, yet can't deliver...
Isn't Torpedo 7, part of the wharehouse, Noel Lemmings group??

Just had an update from 2 German sailors, they've sailed around the world in tandem, one watches, the other sleeps, 4 hours all change, the other skipper / yacht takes over! They have arrived in the Azores from the Caribbean, Horta in lockdown, 2 day stay only, unless you need urgent repairs, then you can apply for an extension. They reported 4 days of dead calms, and 2-1/2 days of force 8 to 10. Both have damage with blown out sails and broken battens amongst the repairs they need to make.

A few years ago I had a german on board who had fished all over the world, he had 4 $40.00 lures that you could set for depth etc. 3 never made it back to the surface, Big Kingi's? last one was a big shark that he managed to get to the boat, I cut the line, far to big to attempt to land. expensive for him, but he had a smile a mile wide!!

I do like the idea of towing a lure around the rocks etc as I go for my evening paddle. I've been thinking through what gear I'd need. Would be fairly easy to tie a bucket down to the the D rings on the load bungy bit of my board. Maybe screw a bit of PVC pipe on the inside of the bucket for a rod holder. Keep a few bits and pieces I may need in the bucket, and somewhere to put the fish.
I need to check out one of these new top water lure stick bates, to see if they sink too fast or not. I wouldn't want to just snag my lure every 5 secs. I normally just use one of those kilwel hex spinners to target a bit of kahwai. Cheap enough, but I need to look at what speed I'd need to paddle at to keep it up.
The other issue I haven't got my head around yet is what happens if I hook up a kingie . I'm not entirely sure how to manage one of those from a paddle board...
Of course whatever you catch you may have to share it with Opha

Did the Molesworth on BMW K75s in Jan '97. Thing was a disaster on gravel, narrow bars, top heavy and skittly like riding on marbles on ice with no grip and enhanced gravity; and I grew up riding dirt bikes. Managed not to drop it - great scenery. Bloody snowed on us on Jan 5th!
I generally do it on an aged R60/6, optional wide bars, and trials type tyres worked very well, unfortunately they (the dual purpose trials tyres) seem to have gone the way of the Dodo, had a mate on a mid 80's R80RT he definitely struggled with the narrow bars and road tyres but still managed to do 2 BMW safari's on the same bike. (R90 type fairing, not the barn door RT one) Currently rebuilding an 83 R80GS I'm sure I will enjoy the ST James / Rainbow / Molesworth even more!

Yeah Wellsford is in auckland catchment, and they hate it. Cheaper prices are because of Gull self service on the way up the hill on the left.
Maungaturoto 93 is $2.09.
Interestingly Marsden point refinery can't be much more than 3 or 4 metres above high tide, nobody seems concerned re the future tidal increases.
NZ fuel storage is well below the recommended minimum, with only days supply and not the several weeks supply that is supposed to be the minimum amount held.
I would supply figures, if I could remember where I saw them.

The Marsden point refinery consortium is contemplating closing up shop and only becoming a storage depot, Given that Muldoons proposed fuel security project in the mid 1980's, that upgrade must be near, or past its use by date this may actually happen. What happens to prices then is anybodies guess.

After using the old yellow pvc type (definitely waterproof except for the sleeves. I have tried Gill, I'm on the 2nd set as the first was replaced by Gill after leaking badly during the 1st seasons use. Burnsco didn't want to know, no warranty, they said. I contacted Gill Direct and after sending photos they replaced the jacket and pants. +++ for Gill. My wifes suit was of the same vintage , but has, over time, had little use has now shed most of the "rubber"? coating inside the material, she leaves a trail of white particles wherever she goes. So it has become useless also (the jacket, not the wife) but I would / will look around for something that will definitely keep me dryer (Stormline?) when I really get sick of the wet bum and water down the sleeves, which still happens with the replacement one.

Molesworth is a good easy ride, hardest part is stopping to open and close gates.but to complete the circuit ride back up the St James / Rainbow road definitely a bit more challenging but not hard, mind the sandflies at lake Tennyson,. St Arnaud to Hanmer, via the Rainbow, Hanmer to the SH1 turn off south of Blenheim via the Molesworth. There was a time when the ST J / Rainbow was open year round, now Doc. has control it is Christmas to Easter, You can book to go through when it / they are closed but you have to "buy" a key.

Most wetness will be rain etc. unless you are pooped. TP32 or any of the others will work ok in the wet, the cover recommendation was given to me by a fellow who had lost 2 to moisture, made sense to me.

Bit difficult, when you are on the piles. Maybe a dinghy row could be considered an extension of the land??? 😉

Heaps more power than you need for working a trim tab. But as they say use what you have got. The TP32 can suffer from water getting into where you don't want it. A cover with a clear over the control buttons solves that & a collar around the shaft that can be tightened enough with a draw string to semi water proof it.
If I remember correctly you will have to set it up so the tab turns the correct way, which is the opposite to using it directly to the tiller.

The "marine traffic" site show quite a few cruisers on the milk run around French Polynesia and several heading further west. I would expect that the cruisers would actually be more at risk of Covid 19 from the islanders than the other way round.

Surely vets are in the essential category??? Kme, I would send an invoice for the cow and calf to the police commissioner + the vets bill as you will probably get one of those as well.

I had an earlier Garmin version a few years back that took us to Tonga / Fiji and back after our more expensive one failed. Never let us down. Still had sextant and paper charts for backup as well, plus a couple of hundred AA batteries.
