A similar issue, I have 4 x Trojan T105 6 volt batteries, 5 + years old, one is always wet around the caps ( and only that one) They are serviced regularly, at least once a month in the winter and often more than that. 2 solar panels keep them charged, 1 x 75w probably at least 15 + years old and 1 x 100w at 1 year old all through an Epever 20a mmpt controller. The "wet"battery doesn't show any difference between cells when checked with a hydrometer and is consistent with the "dry top ones?????? any and all suggestions welcome.

The problem with the long canoes with many warriors is that any sea of moderate size swamps them, OK in rivers, but at sea not so good. One was swamped not so many years ago at Waitangi.

I still have yet to see evidence that a) recreational boats are a problem
that they have a sh*t show in hell of stopping the critters no matter what they do.You mean the critters on the bottom or the ones making the decisions, either way rec boaters loose, everyone wants a clean bum, but when cleaning grids are disappeared, effective antifouls are neutered, and the only folk who seem to be allowed to return sea grown organisms back into the sea are the mussel farmers, we (rec boaties) are the easiest target.

Don't turn it backwards!!!

And you know who will be blamed for any rubbish that is dumped around or near the water, whether true or not!!

There is a clip of a yacht that had just sailed through a pumice raft, when they looked back the water they had sailed through looked like it was boiling, how lucky they were !!! I wouldn't imagine there would be a lot of bouyancy if you were in it plus whatever other nasties / fumes

Yeah, Fish, that kind of girl!
Am one of two women in the regular 8.5 fleet here in Auckland. We were the only boat to go out today (gusting high 30's). Took great pleasure in telling the other crews to woman up and stop being a bunch of a boys
And if you know me, you'll know those comments were dripping in love and sarcasm. Equality for all! What's between your legs has zero impact on how you sail a boat!! (I can't believe I have to explain this to some people!)

Schedule 80 (50mm dia. wall thickness 5.5mm) is probably as thick or thicker than the cast iron ones, but I would expect a similar life span, (10 to 15 + years) Monel is of course the bullet proof material, only down side is material and manufacturing costs. The fact that no one uses monel for them commercially would tend to back that up.

Slight thread drift but I finished my Jordan Series Drogue today. Final stage was packing it into the launching bag, which clips on at the back of the boat. I'm happy with how it came out.
Great job, I wish mine (made many years ago ) packed down that small, using 3 strand 16mm it overflows a 25L bucket and needs to be set up early. Very difficult to do once things start to turn pear shaped.

Rehab, It was with a hint of irony / sarcasm that I mentioned the amount of debris from the mussel lines being returned to the sea, I'm sure that the powers that be know exactly what is being done and how. Commercial interests and the $$$ they represent trumps everything else.
Yachties are a soft target, not a lot of cohesion amongst them, for reference look at this forum,

Re being forbidden to wash your boats bum at the Smokehouse bay piles:
I have wondered if the folk who seem to want to police the cleaning of yachts bottoms have ever watched a Mussel harvesting boat in Fitzroy Harbour while it is harvesting, the amount of mud, weed, and anything and everything else growing on the ropes (maybe fan worms, perhaps sea squirts, and their ilk) are washed back into the self same water that they came from in huge quantities. (think tonnes) Something that is a big No No for yachties, surely if the mussel harvesters can do it it then it can't be bad or the above folk would be on their case. Surely??
The mussels are all they are after after all.

Another lovely filter feeder, if we are not careful all that dirty water in Whangarei's upper harbour will become clean again, thanks to the "Mediteranian" fan worm, how bad that would be, nothing left for the poor barnacles to cling onto.
I think that the NRC should adopt Don Quixote as their mascot / emblem, just change the windmills for Alien filter feeders.
With the local elections about to happen, it will be interesting as to how many of the incumbents get back in and what changes may come about if there is a substantial changing of the guard.

Schedule 80 black pipe fittings will cope with the hot / cold much better that the shiny SS and will generally last considerably longer, Hi temp paint (2 stroke expansion chamber paint) will look after the appearance.

My time in the Med there was either too much wind (Melteme / Mistral, etc. etc. ) or just not enough. Motoring at least 50% of the time.

Hmmm, he may well be correct, but I would be cautious. There are 3 (maybe more) different Penrite products with their cheapest being the least life cycle. It could well be that Penrite bottles an even cheaper version for Repco.
Yep Alan, it could be so, he volunteered the info and was very knowlegible on other stuff.

On the latest Cruiser Forum (online) there is a poll of most types of batteries used on members yachts / ships etc. The Firefly carbon foam type 31 batteries got good press, no negative posts about them as far as I could see, and several plusses. currently available in the US, does anyone import them here??

Had it from a helpful Repco salesman that "Repco Brand" anti freeze is re-badged "Penrite" = considerable reduction in $

BOI, you have only half the story. There are two very different issues you are confusing together. Galvanic Corrosion and stray electrical Currents. Galvanic corrosion is due to a current being created between tow dissimilar metals. Stray electrical currents are caused by electrical leakage and improper Earthing. Both have the same result, but are two very different causes.
There are two ways to attack Galvanic corrosion. Either bond or isolate. Any two metals connected to one another and submersed MUST be protected via an anode. With some larger vessels, there maybe many metals exposed to the Saltwater. Such as bronze skin fittings and especially if it is a Steel Hull for instance. In this instance it is common for all fittings to be bonded together and one Zinc protects them all. In some instances like Fglass hulls, Bronze skin fittings are left completely isolated and only the shaft/prop and associated parts are connected to an anode.
By the way, in some instances, electrical current can work right through paint. It depends on what the paint is as to how insulative it is. But the main concern is when the paint is damaged.
In relation to another post comment, Anodes should last no longer than a year as a rule of thumb. Any longer and the anode may be too large to begin with.
Slightly aside, Aluminium Anodes have never been discussed on Crew as far as I know. They are well worth considering as they last longer, are cheaper and in fact can provide better protection.
Aluminium Indium anodes work well on alluminium hulls, and they last.

Just listened to an underwater drone manufacturer on RNZ, he stated the reason for developing the uwd technology is because of the aggression of Aucklands resident Leopard seal towards divers diving on recreational and commercial shipping. apparently originally it was only curious now acting like it is looking for a feed. According to the interviewee it has attempted to attack swimming dogs several times. Safe around Westhaven? I think not!!
With regard to Med fanworm he said it is a lost battle with no possibility of containing it, it has been in Lyttleton and Auckland since 2008, someone needs to tell the regional councils!!
Apparently the main concern of MPI is that it may attach to the Mussell farm mussell lines and compete for the available food, being a long tube with the filter fan at the end they think it will access the food before it gets to the mussells, threatening the viability of mussell farming.

Special permission must be granted by Customs New Zealand (external site) to enter the waters or stop at the Kermadecs when travelling from overseas to or from New Zealand. The requirement is that you travel directly from one customs clearance port to another customs clearance port.
I would assume that that permission is only required if you plan to sail within the 12mile limit, otherwise any "ship" entering the 200 mile economic zone would have to comply, which would be against the freedom of navigation rights of all shipping. Isn't America currently testing this right in the South China sea??

I thought that the implication was that if something happened that involved insurance and the gas setup didn't comply, you might not have a happy outcome.
