  4. If the boat is a common design, the the stability figures were done right back at the beginning with the first boat and the designer should be able to supply those figures. It is only when the Keel or Mast is played with that those figures go out the window. When I read that I needed to perform the stability test to get Cat 1 I thought well that blows taking a Tahitian offshore then. But the inspector I talked to said no the tests are for new unproven designs and that I would not have to produce those figures, because these Tahitians had been sailing all over the world for years.   5. Interesting you say that. Because the guys at CSL said no you don't want the flux gate because having so much steel in the boat, the magnetic field changes as you heel over. So instead they have this stereo GPS antennae. Two receivers about 18" apart. So the differences in signal times apparently act like a Rate gyro and the course is more accurate than a flux gate.

  9. I perhaps should add, there are many Glycols. Not all are poisonus. Glycols are and Organic compund from the Alcohol group. Ethylene Glycol is the Poisonus one. Diethylene Glycol. There are Tri's and Pents and so on, but Di is used in the making of Polyesters and urathanes and Paints etc. Polyethylene Glycol is not poisonus and can be found in foods Propylene Glycol is not poisonus and is often used in medicenes, food aditives and external body products.
  10. Ummmmm, it gets absorbed through your skin. I wouldn't be putting it on my toes. It might kill more than just toe jam.
  11. Get the paint cleaned off and allow it to dry and then see what is soft. As Motorbike found with his, the black stuff was not actually rot, but old sump oil and diesel that had soaked into the timber and softened it up.
  12. Without reading the links first, the big problem with Evadure was descovered about 10yrs (or probably more now) back. That being of it being porous. The Solvent evaporating would leave "holes" in the epoxy and it was found that timber coated in the stuff still took on water. It is also debatable as to whether the biocide in Evadure actualy helps or not. Sure it kills mould, but the epoxy pretty well locks it up anyway. A coating of a low viscosity solvent free Epoxy will work just as well in many situations. But if you want to penatrate into timber, a bit of solvent in Epoxy, or the premade
  13. It is just simple anti-freeze. In fact, the cheapest ones tend to be the more plain basic. The expensive ones are usually called Corrosion inhibitors. But even if it does have a bit of corrosion inhibitor in it it doesn't hurth anything. Now the one thing you do need to check is if it is a pure glycol or a ready to use, which is the glycol diluted with water to be used directly. Not an economical way of buying it diluted.     All bigger than 10m if my ability to convert from Imperial to Metric is anygood There seems to be that magic mark in size around the 12m point. Below and they all seem to be "Sports/Day sailor" type designs and 12 and above start to take on the "Weekender/Cruiser" style. The ability of making good sea miles each day is all OK if you have the right wind driections. I thiunk that tends to go to custard sailing around NZ though.     I doub't you will find anything in the Cat range in 10m. My view is that you have to get a very big cat to start getting any decent living space and then you end up with big costs. Like special Marina Berthing, haul out and that you hav two hulls to maintain rather than one. Make sure you go into this with all things considered.

    Rob, we sold our home and bought a boat and lived on it for a short term. Still have the boat and love it 7yrs later. A few words of advice though. First off, it is a major change and at least for us, it was me that struggled with it the most. But there is a rule of thumb that all doing this must live by. Once aboard, DO NOT make and rash decisions for at least three weeks. it takes that long to start to settle. And expect to to struggle at first.     Interesting to hear your point of view AC. Personally I am the otherway. I find them closti...Chlosti....too confined. The ceiling height is too low for me. A mono feels bigger and some designs are bigger than others of the same length.

    Yeah they are not cheap. If you really want, I can get a trade price for ya shane. I deal with the supplier and get good deals and would just pass it on at my cost to you. But for your situation, I am sure the CAV would be just the bees knees. I can get those too, but that one on Trademe was cheap.     Surely not. Racor is a polycarb bowl and surely would be even worse in a fire. I can not remember reading anything about that in the rules, can anyone confirm that?? Shane, I have the Top and bottom parts both in metal if you want it, you can have it. I just assumed you would want glass. Yep trip still on. Fly down Friday, provision boat Saturday, head around to Havelock Sunday, haulout Monday and then start the trip north hopefully tuesday or Wednesday.
