I doub't you will find anything in the Cat range in 10m. My view is that you have to get a very big cat to start getting any decent living space and then you end up with big costs. Like special Marina Berthing, haul out and that you hav two hulls to maintain rather than one. Make sure you go into this with all things considered.

Rob, we sold our home and bought a boat and lived on it for a short term. Still have the boat and love it 7yrs later. A few words of advice though. First off, it is a major change and at least for us, it was me that struggled with it the most. But there is a rule of thumb that all doing this must live by. Once aboard, DO NOT make and rash decisions for at least three weeks. it takes that long to start to settle. And expect to to struggle at first. It is not just the space you are living in that changes. It is your entire life and life style that changes. Get your wife on a Basic boat handlin

Oh well, 70ft of anything would feel spacious.

Interesting to hear your point of view AC. Personally I am the otherway. I find them closti...Chlosti....too confined. The ceiling height is too low for me. A mono feels bigger and some designs are bigger than others of the same length.

For some reason, Suid likes being stuffed into confined spaces Personaly I like space But Squid has heaps and heaps of experience and I look forward to reading his "essy" as well. From things I have learn't, the bigger you go, the more expensive the lift outs, upkeep, the more expensive to find berthage and moorings, the bigger the sails to handle with just two etc etc. When just two of you are cruising, you tend to be solo most of the time. I have set up our boat to make it easier for Dawn to handle the sails on her own via "systems". But the more "systems" the more complex the who

    Diesel Filters

Yeah they are not cheap. If you really want, I can get a trade price for ya shane. I deal with the supplier and get good deals and would just pass it on at my cost to you. But for your situation, I am sure the CAV would be just the bees knees. I can get those too, but that one on Trademe was cheap. Actually, I wonder if I should do a "crew special" if anyone is interested. As long as I am not standing on anyones toes though. If we don't have a resident supplier here, I could make up assemblies. Single or twin filter arrangements and per tank if required, mounted and with all the valves

    Diesel Filters

If that is the case then that is cheap and far cheaper than the price I was told a year or two back. I was told around $275 without the pump. Maybe I asked the wrong person.

The CAV's don't leak. Fusion, do you have any idea on cost of those Racors??

    Diesel Filters

Surely not. Racor is a polycarb bowl and surely would be even worse in a fire. I can not remember reading anything about that in the rules, can anyone confirm that?? Shane, I have the Top and bottom parts both in metal if you want it, you can have it. I just assumed you would want glass. Yep trip still on. Fly down Friday, provision boat Saturday, head around to Havelock Sunday, haulout Monday and then start the trip north hopefully tuesday or Wednesday.

The only concern is if you have an external electric fuel pump fitted before the filter, pressurising it. That can be a problem for the return. If it sucks from the filter or you are using the engine lift pump, then not a problem with that mate. Just plumb into the other "in". Be aware of the arrows on the top of the filter housing. You will have an in and out on each side. It is not a major issue, but if you plumb into the other inlet, then the return fuel gets re filtered. It's only a dribble, so you are not polishing as such.

This is the thing you want Shane. There is nothing else cheaper and they are a good little unit, with cheap replacment filters. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 377727.htm The smallest and cheapest Racor is up around 200 or 300.
  13. Interesting SM. As you will be well aware, there are other versions of treatment devices out there. Lectrasan/Purasan etc. The Lectrasan had one major disadvantage in that it was too complex for it's own good. So reliability becomes and issue. Although in a real sense, for the environment it was in and the job it was doing, it could be said it was reliable, but fgor the cruising yachty, it was not and it is expensive for the cruiser to upkeep. I guess that is why you are looking at 50ft/Charter business.
  14. I have been taking a surf around the net and it seems that some parts of the Us have banned them. Mostly on several fresh water lakes. And the State of California has supposedly banned everything and anything that has a 2 stroke, but I don't know how that's working out for them, because a lot of big groups, like Bikers are really fighting hard and being very defient. I found this from the EU and as you said, it seems just those that don;t meet the standard. The EPA in the USA are apparently going to be getting even tougher, but doing it stages.
  15. That's interesting Rigger, because I had also read that 2stroke was banned for much of the rest of the world. Interesting if it hasn't.
  16. And what kind of power draw are we talking Southernman? This sounds most interesting. I think eventually NZ will follow the US laws in regards to effluent holding, treatment and disposal. But I guess a few Councils need to get their act sorted before it could be forced on boaters. Nah hang, about who am I kiddin.
  17. Well if they have cleaned their act up, that is great. But it used to be a massive problem. One of the worst affected was Alaska where the liners would go up to the Glaciers. The cold water meant that bacteria did npt break the efluent down very quickly and several ships a week were going into those places. There were massive complaints about it and when it hit the Headlines, the questions were raised and suggestions made that maybe the ships should not be allowed in the Soth Island Fijords. Mabe it was because of this that treatment and disposal has been looked at.
  18. Depends on what you are feeding them with squid. It is mainly because nothing eats vegie scraps. Have you noticed that not even Seagulls or ducks eat the stuff. Fish certainly don't, so it just floats around out there till it eventually breaks down, but that is even quite slow. We try and macerate as much as we can, then it breks down fairly quickly.
  19. I don't know about better than food going in.I ain't going to try and let you know anyway. Yeah there are three(?) levels as I remember it. Although I stand for correction if someone is clearer on this. Type 1, 2 & 3. Type 1 being fully treated. Type 3 being untreated. But some places will have a complete no discharge Zone, no matter how good the treatment.
  20. Oh but here is a weird rule though. Did you guys know you are not alowed to dump your vegitable waste over the side? You have to cut it to small pieces and it must only be discharged over the side when you are at least 3Nm from shore. So you can not legally discharge your vegie scraps over the side at a mooring or anchor in any bay.Who is going to go 3Nm offshore just to dump there vegie scraps??
  21. Then maybe it's a good idea I can hold 2500ltrs of effluent. Err.....the Boat can hold 2500ltrs of it that is. Some my say I can sure discharge a lot of it when I talk, but at least it isn't 2500ltrs. I have often wondered how the Mederteranian is so clear with so many poor countries around it's edges that must be dumping humungous volumes of stuff, including probably far worse than just crap, into that clear water. Yet it remains so clear. All the smaller boats aside, the crusie liners are the biggest culprits. I don't know why they don't have stricter rules. They come into some
  22. I tell, she seems to have so much command that girl. And it always seems to be early morning. KM!!! NO!!!! don't come up with that Line. yeah I know what ya thinking.
  23. Amadis, Westpark Marina would possibly be about the cheapest you will find in Auckland.
  24. OK, so is it once again just us Marlbarians getting screwed again. It's about double that amount down here. I was pretty sure we paid for the "seabed area". Or at least I know they were strongly murnering it and if we aren't charged that yet, then when it happens, then the cost per year will increase even more.
  25. Blimey, who pissed in your Cornflakes Bret. I don't mind ones complaining about bludgers, I do it myself, but dude, at least get your facts right before leaping into someone like that. Do you not realise that you pay rates on the Mooring?? It's not alot, but it doesn't equate to a lot of land area either. But if you take the rates paid on bare land and break that down to a square metre area, it works out about the same as the mooring block takes up. And seeing as I have not yet seen Sewerage, Water, Power, Phone and a footpath taken right to the Mooring block, it works out about the same. So a
